Award-Winning Virginia Restaurant Closes After Nearly 60 Years

A beloved small-town Virginia restaurant is closing its doors after nearly six decades in business.

Hale’s Restaurant in Shawsville in Montgomery County shut down over the weekend. The eatery revealed the news in a social media post.

“After nearly six decades of serving this community, the time has finally come. Hale’s Restaurant has quietly closed its doors for the last time,” the post said.

“This is not a decision made lightly. And it is not the goodbye we hoped for. Truthfully, we wish we could have offered a goodbye in person, a chance to pour one more cup of coffee, serve one more plate of biscuits and gravy, share one more conversation across the counter. But the time has come.”

Hale’s was founded in 1967 by Jim and Margie Hale. Since 2013, Margie’s daughter Sandy has run the business herself, but the responsibilities have taken a toll.

“For over twenty years, Sandra has poured her heart, sweat, and soul into this place,’ Hale’s Facebook post said. “Nearly 70 years old now, she still works six days a week back in the kitchen and spends her ‘day off’ buried in the behind the scenes labor that keeps the business operating. But its all become too much. Her health, along with the weight of running a small business in today’s economy, have made it abundantly clear that it is time to retire.”

Back in 2014, television station WSLS 10, which serves the Roanoke-Lynchburg market, named Hale’s the No. 1 breakfast restaurant in the area.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced Hale’s to shut down for four months, but the establishment returned to serve customers up until this past weekend.

“To our beloved customers: thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” Hale’s said. “Thank you for your loyalty, your kindness, your stories, your patience, and all of the laughter. This community has been the backbone of Hale’s through everything we’ve survived over the years, including a fire, vandalism, a recession, theft, and even a global pandemic.

“Your unwavering support, encouragement, and generosity is what allowed us to fight through the hard times to get back to doing what we loved most: sharing meals with our neighbors.”

Dick Vitale Issues 2 Word Message to WNBA Players After Caitlin Clark All-Star Snub

Caitlin Clark may be a fan favorite, but her WNBA peers don’t seem to feel the same way, and longtime ESPN analyst Dick Vitale isn’t hiding his frustration.

On Monday, the WNBA revealed the roster for its upcoming All-Star Game, with Clark and Napheesa Collier named captains after leading all players in fan votes. But when the full voting breakdown was released, it became clear that Clark’s fellow players ranked her much lower, reportedly ninth among guards.

That didn’t sit well with Vitale, who took to social media to criticize the league’s players for what he called “pure jealousy.”

“Absolutely PURE JEALOUSY that @WNBA players voted Caitlin Clark the 9th best guard,” Vitale wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Someday they will realize what she has done for ALL of the players in the WNBA. Charted planes, increase in salaries, sold-out crowds, improved TV ratings.”

Not everyone agreed with Vitale’s analysis, though.

“Respectfully, they were already working on the chartered fight program before she joined the league and teams were already selling out crowds/moving arenas. Ever heard of the Las Vegas Aces, the first team to sell out season tickets?” wrote Joshua Sánchez.

Aaron J. Fentress felt Clark’s injury played a role. He replied, “Dick. Stop. She has played in just 9 games and is shooting 39/29. She doesn’t even qualify for the leader boards.”

The voting format for the WNBA All-Star Game is split between fans (50 percent), players (25 percent), and media (25 percent). While Clark received the most fan votes overall, she was ranked behind Allisha Gray and Sabrina Ionescu by media members and even further down by her fellow athletes.

Clark, who’s averaging 18.2 points, 8.9 assists, and 5.0 rebounds this season for the Indiana Fever, has helped drive record-breaking attendance and viewership since entering the league. Despite missing seven games due to injury, her impact on and off the court has been undeniable.

The 2025 All-Star Game is scheduled for July 19 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, which isClark’s home arena. But before that, she’s listed as questionable for Tuesday’s Commissioner’s Cup Final against the Lynx and Collier.

As the spotlight on Clark grows brighter, so does the debate over her place in the league. One thing is clear: fans are all in, but not everyone in the WNBA seems ready to give her that same level of respect.

Train Like Chris Bumstead With These 2 Classic Moves

Have you ever seen six-time Classic Physique Mr. Olympia Chris Bumstead? The man’s an absolute unit. Standing 6’1″ and tipping the scales at around 240 pounds on stage, he’s brought that iconic “golden era” aesthetic back into the spotlight—again and again. His long legs and full six-pack give him the statuesque look associated with some of the greatest legends of our time, like Frank Zane and Arnold Schwarzenegger. And even though he’s technically retired, the guy’s still in peak form.

If you’re going to steal a page from anyone’s playbook, his isn’t a bad place to start. Sure, not everyone’s job is to be an Olympian, but that doesn’t mean you can’t train like one.

Below, Bumstead shares the two moves he swears by for building a bigger, leaner physique. No, doing just two exercises won’t make you look like him, but it certainly won’t hurt.

2 Exercises to Build a Classic Physique

“It’s tough to pick just two, because honestly, there’s no one-size-fits-all,” he says. “Everyone’s built differently and needs different tools at different times. But two exercises I personally love are the incline dumbbell press and the hack squat.”

Incline Dumbbell Press

James Michelfelder

How to Do It

  1. Set an adjustable bench to a 30°-45° angle and lie back on it with a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder-level.
  2. Press the weights over your chest before lowering back to the starting position.
  3. That’s 1 rep.

Why It Works

“The incline dumbbell press lets you move heavy weights with a full range of motion and hits both chest and shoulders without putting your body in a risky position,” Bumstead says.

How to Do It

  1. Stand on a hack squat platform with your back against the pad and shoulders under the supports.
  2. Place your feet shoulder-width apart, unlock the safety handles, and lower into a squat.
  3. Push through your heels to return to the starting position.
  4. That’s 1 rep.

Why It Works

“The hack squat, especially the 45-degree version, is amazing for loading your legs while still staying safe and controlled,” Bumstead says. “If you’re able to get a deep range of motion with it, where your hamstrings touch your calves, it’s one of the best tools out there for quad development.”

How to Train With Purpose When Time’s Tight

When you watch top athletes train, it’s easy to assume you need to spend hours in the gym to see results. Sure, some of that time goes to mobility work—and let’s be honest, some socializing—but the workouts themselves can be long too. According to Bumstead, that doesn’t have to be the case for the average lifter. If you train with purpose and intensity, you can get a solid workout done in under an hour. Take a chest workout for example.

“Start with a quick warm-up, then go right into incline dumbbell press, three sets [of] eight or so reps,” Bumstead adds. “The aim here is to have a descending load, which means if you are pushing yourself hard enough, you will not be able to use the same weight for each set in order to hit the rep range. Then move to a flat machine chest press, do two working sets here, aim for 12 reps, on the first six reps do a slow controlled five-second eccentric, and then for the last six speed it up slightly but still controlled with a two-second eccentric.”

If your chest is on fire at this point, good, that means the workout’s working. When you’re finished with the first two exercises, move on to a chest fly and pushup superset.

“Do four sets of flys for 12 reps with a slow five- to six-second eccentric, on the last rep hold the stretch for 15 seconds, and try to do a few quarter reps,” Bumstead suggests. “Then go straight into pushups to failure. Keep rest under 60 seconds and don’t slack on intensity.”

The Simple Science Behind Effective Hypertrophy Training

If you’re new to lifting, you’ve probably heard the word hypertrophy tossed around like everyone’s supposed to know what it means. In simple terms, it’s just the process of your muscles getting bigger. And according to Bumstead, building muscle isn’t nearly as complicated as most people make it out to be.

“It comes down to time under tension, progressive overload, and a full range of motion,” he explains. “The lifts I mentioned work because they check all the boxes: good tempo, large range of motion, heavy enough to push you. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Most people just need to train hard, be consistent, and keep showing up.”

Harrison Ford Vows to Drink Glenmorangie Whisky Because Formula 1 Drivers Are Busy

Early this year, one of the best Scotch brands on the planet, Glenmorangie, enlisted Harrison Ford as a new spokesman in a series of humorous and eye-catching short films. Not since Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade had we been wishing to see Ford in a kilt, but once it happened, it seemed like the most natural thing on the planet.

And now, Ford is back, encouraging us all to pour some Glenmorangie in another brand mash-up. This time, Ford has traded his kilt for a racecar helmet. In a new short film that was just posted on Instagram, Ford reveals that Glenmorangie, his “favorite whisky,” is now the official whisky of Formula 1 racing.

This brand connection is part of the 75th anniversary celebration of Formula 1 racing.

Ford jokes that he “knows the feeling” of turning 75, and that’s because Ford is actually about to turn 83 on July 13 of this year. So, technically, he’s older than the racecar sport of Formula 1.

“I’d toast you guys, but I know you’re driving,” Ford says. “So, I’m gonna take this bottle home and I’ll raise a toast there.”

You can watch Ford’s other short films for Glenmorangie, directed by fellow Star Wars alum Joel Edgerton, on YouTube, or right here.

The new Brad Pitt movie, F1: The Movie, all about Formula 1 racing, is in theaters now.
