More than four decades after Mel Gibson first took the wheel as Max Rockatansky, one of his most famous action movies is still getting recognition as one of the genre’s greats.
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, the 1981 sequel directed by George Miller, has been included on StudioBinder’s list of the best action movies of all time. The film helped establish the post-apocalyptic style that would eventually become one of the defining features of the Mad Max franchise.
The movie takes place in a bleak future where gasoline has become one of the world’s most valuable resources. Gibson’s Max is a drifter who becomes involved with a community defending its remaining fuel supply from a violent gang.
That setup leads to one of the film’s biggest strengths: its action.
‘Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior’ is Completely Action-Packed
StudioBinder highlights the movie’s incredible action, world-building, and strong central hero, while specifically pointing to its climactic tanker chase as one of its standout sequences.
The movie was also a major step forward for Miller’s vision of the Mad Max world. The first film introduced Gibson’s character, but The Road Warrior expanded the post-apocalyptic setting and established many of the visual ideas that would become synonymous with the franchise.
And there’s an interesting connection between the 1981 movie and the film sitting at the very top of StudioBinder’s list.
‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Takes the No. 1 Spot
Mad Max: Fury Road, released 34 years after The Road Warrior, is ranked No. 1 on StudioBinder’s list of the best action movies of all time.
The 2015 film stars Tom Hardy as Max and Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa, with Miller returning to direct. StudioBinder praises its practical action filmmaking, survival themes, and elaborate car chases, calling it the best action movie of all time.
That means two of the top films on StudioBinder’s action ranking come from the same franchise and the same director, more than three decades apart.
The Road Warrior helped establish the blueprint. Fury Road took many of those ideas and pushed them to a much larger scale.
For Gibson fans, though, The Road Warrior remains one of the defining movies of his early career — and a film that helped turn Max Rockatansky into one of the most recognizable action characters in movie history.
