On September 1, 1850, Swedish soprano Jenny Lind arrived in New York aboard the steamship Atlantic, stepping into a city already gripped by “Lind Mania.” Managed by P.T. Barnum, the singer had been promoted to American audiences as the “Swedish Nightingale,” and contemporary reporting captured the extraordinary scale of her celebrity.

The New York Daily Tribune estimated that 30,000 to 40,000 people crowded piers, ships, roofs and windows to catch a glimpse of her arrival. The scale of the reception is especially striking because Lind was still largely unknown to the American public as a performer.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History notes that in 1849 almost nobody in the United States knew her, yet by September 1850 she had become one of the country’s most famous and celebrated women. Barnum’s advertising campaign had transformed an acclaimed European soprano into an American cultural phenomenon before most Americans had even heard her sing.

The “Greatest” Soprano of Her Age

That’s not to say Lind’s reputation was, open and shut, a product of American publicity. She had already achieved extraordinary acclaim in Europe, where she was regarded as one of the leading singers of her generation.

Contemporary American coverage went even further: after her September 11 debut at Castle Garden, the New York Tribune declared her “the greatest singer we have ever heard.” The Tribune wrote (widely attributed to the paper’s music critic commonly identified in later accounts as John Sullivan Dwight or a staff writer for the Tribune):

“Jenny Lind’s first concert is over, and all doubts are at an end. She is the greatest singer we have ever heard, and her success is all that was anticipated from her genius and her fame.”

Note that the original 1850 New York Daily Tribune issue is held in major newspaper archives; free full-page scans of the specific review are not widely available without institutional access.

Modern sources likewise describe the historical perception of Lind in similarly exalted terms. HISTORY characterizes her as “the greatest opera performer in the world” in its account of her 1850 arrival, while the Barnum Museum describes her as the toast of England and Europe. HISTORY wrote:

“On September 1, 1850, Jenny Lind, the greatest opera performer in the world, arrives from Europe to the United States for a triumphant national tour…”

A Legacy That Still Defines Opera Celebrity

Lind’s American tour became one of the great commercial spectacles of the 19th century. Her first New York concert sold out 5,000 seats, while an auction pushed a single ticket as high as $225. Barnum and Lind’s concerts eventually generated more than $712,000 in receipts, an enormous sum for the period.

While there is no credible modern “greatest of all time” numerical ranking that places Lind at a specific position among every opera singer in history, her historical recognition says all that need said: she was regarded in her own era as arguably the greatest singer audiences had heard, and her unprecedented American reception helped establish the template for the modern international music superstar.

Forty-eight years ago today, a landmark horror movie that became extremely influential and was directed by a true icon of the genre premiered. Decades later, Dawn of the Dead continues to be widely praised as an all-time classic, as it has been included in rankings of the greatest horror films ever produced.

The Horror Classic ‘Dawn of the Dead’ Premiered 48 Years Ago Today

On September 1, 1978, the movie Dawn of the Dead premiered in Turin, Italy. The horror classic was directed by George A. Romero, an icon of the genre who also helmed Day of the Dead and the original version of Night of the Living Dead. However, in a fascinating twist, the version of the film that screened was different from the cut that most North Americans know best. The European version that debuted was screened under the alternative title, Zombi, and was edited under the supervision of another horror legend, Dario Argento.

As a Paste Magazine article on the different versions of Dawn of the Dead noted, the Zombi cut removed much of the film’s humor. It also changed the stock music from Romero’s cut. Instead, Argento used a score composed by the Italian progressive rock band Goblin.

It wouldn’t be until months after the Italian premiere that Dawn of the Dead would arrive in the United States. It debuted in America during the USA Film Festival on April 7, 1979. After that, the movie continued to roll out into other cities in the weeks that followed, and it premiered in Canada in June 1979.

Why Critics Still Rank ‘Dawn of the Dead’ Among the Greatest Horror Movies

Since Dawn of the Dead was originally released, the film has consistently been ranked among the greatest scary movies ever. There are many reasons why it is widely considered brilliant. Some examples include its commentary on mindless consumerism, its influence on the genre, and its status as both a critique of society and an intimate character study. Additionally, the movie has long been celebrated for combining humor with scares, as it managed to balance horrific situations with moments of real fun.

In addition to George A. Romero doing a stellar job writing and directing Dawn of the Dead, the film was highlighted by Tom Savini’s legendary special effects. The classic also included memorable performances from David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott H. Reiniger, and Gaylen Ross. Perhaps the film’s most lasting legacy is its greatest line of dialogue: “When there’s no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth.”

For all those reasons and more, Dawn of the Dead is a staple of lists that rank the greatest horror films. In March 2026, Time Out ranked it at No. 9 on its updated list of the “best horror movies of all time.” Months earlier, in October 2025, Paste Magazine included it at No. 8 on its ranking of the same name. It is also featured on other similar lists, like a dynamic ranking of the “Best Horror Movies of All Time” from Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, a February 2025 Collider ranking of “10 Must-Watch Zombie Movies” featured it at No. 1.

In 1979, a little-known Dublin band called U2 released its first commercial record, U2-3, an Ireland-only three-track release that introduced the world to a group that would eventually become one of the most acclaimed rock acts in history.

Issued through CBS Ireland, the record featured “Out of Control,” “Stories for Boys” and “Boy/Girl,” with the songs recorded at Dublin’s Windmill Lane Studios. U2’s official archive identifies the release as the band’s first single and notes that only 1,000 copies of the original 12-inch pressing were produced, each individually numbered.

From 1,000 Copies to a Greatest-of-All-Time Ranking

The modest scale of U2-3 makes the band’s eventual transformation even more remarkable. The release became U2’s first chart success in Ireland, with the 7-inch edition reaching No. 19 on the Irish Singles Chart. Its three-song format is also significant because it captured the young band before its international breakthrough and before the 1980 arrival of Boy, the debut album that would establish U2 beyond Ireland.

Decades later, U2’s standing had expanded far beyond anything suggested by that tiny first pressing. Rolling Stone ranked U2 No. 22 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, placing the Irish group alongside foundational figures including The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix.

The magazine also ranked Bono, The Edge and Larry Mullen Jr. among the greatest singers, guitarists and drummers respectively.

Rock Hall Recognition Cemented the Legacy

That critical stature has been matched by institutional recognition. U2 entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, with Bruce Springsteen delivering the induction.

The Recording Academy lists U2 with 22 Grammy wins from 46 nominations, including Album of the Year victories for The Joshua Tree and How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.

So, when U2-3 emerged from Dublin in 1979, it was in retrospect, the opening document of a career that would place U2 firmly among the most celebrated artists in popular music history.

To be eligible to participate, people need to film themselves doing the challenge and upload the video on TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube. They’ll also have to tag Dr. Squatch and use.

If barking at soap displays in public isn’t really your thing, there’s another option. Dr. Squatch is hiding special briefcases filled with gold bars of soap in select cities in the four participating countries. The hidden prizes will be worth as much as $50,000 in cash, and clues will be released throughout the campaign.

Also on the table is $250,000 from 25 winning scratchers, each worth $10,000. The scratchers are being distributed through specially marked IShowSpeed Loot Box Bundles on TikTok Shop, but fans can also request one for free via the campaign website without buying anything.

It all culminates in a last hunt with another $250,000 purse. Dr Squatch has yet to reveal the details of the final challenge, but after nine weeks of footraces, hidden briefcases, and people barking at soap, it’s probably safe to expect something suitably chaotic.

For IShowSpeed fans, it’s definitely a different type of giveaway. Instead of just making the $1 million a sweepstakes and crossing your fingers for the best, the campaign turns it into a huge scavenger hunt and social media challenge. More than a year after Ozzy Osbourne’s death, his daughter Kelly Osbourne is sharing an intimate new detail about how the family said goodbye to the rock icon.

In a recent interview with Hello!, Kelly revealed that the Osbournes chose not to send the Black Sabbath frontman to a morgue immediately after his death in July 2025. Instead, they brought him home.

“We didn’t put my dad in any sort of morgue,” Kelly said. “He came straight home and we got to spend a few days with him and mourn with him and make sure that everything was the way we wanted it to be.’

Ozzy died at age 76, just weeks after his final performance at Black Sabbath’s Back to the Beginning concert in his hometown of Birmingham, England.

The private goodbye was followed by an outpouring of support from fans around the world, something Kelly said helped the family through the earliest days of their grief.

“It saved us,” she said, explaining that the family read the notes and acknowledged the flowers and gifts sent in Ozzy’s memory.

Kelly also admitted that losing her father fundamentally changed her.

“I’ll never be the person I was before my father died,” she said. “A part of me died, too.”

For decades, Ozzy built his reputation as one of rock’s wildest and most unpredictable figures. But Kelly’s recollection offers a very different glimpse of the Prince of Darkness; one centered not on the stage persona that made him famous, but on the family that wanted a few more days with him before saying goodbye.

WWE’s 2027 Royal Rumble has been penciled in for February 6, according to a new backstage report, potentially putting WWE and AEW’s biggest events on the same weekend.

WWE has already confirmed that the Royal Rumble will head to Phoenix, Arizona, in 2027, but the company has yet to officially announce when the event will take place. That could change soon, as the latest word from wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer suggests WWE is currently planning to hold the event on February 6, 2027.

The date came up while Meltzer was discussing AEW’s recently announced Dynasty pay-per-view, which is scheduled for February 7 in Liverpool, England. During Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer said that the Royal Rumble is “scheduled for February 6,” putting the two major wrestling events just one day apart.

For WWE fans, the timing would be pretty unusual. WWE and AEW rarely put major shows directly next to each other, although the two companies have occasionally found themselves competing for attention on the same weekend.

The Royal Rumble Is Where the Road to WrestleMania Begins

The February 6 date isn’t official just yet, so WWE could still move the event later in the month. Still, the timing makes sense given WWE’s recent scheduling pattern, with the Royal Rumble taking place in early February in two of the last three years.

More importantly, the Rumble is traditionally where the road to WrestleMania really begins to take shape. The winners of the men’s and women’s Royal Rumble matches typically earn championship opportunities at WWE’s biggest event of the year, while the match itself often sets up some of the biggest WrestleMania storylines.

And in 2027, that means the road will eventually lead to WrestleMania 43, which is scheduled for April 10 and 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. With only about two months between the Rumble and WrestleMania, February’s event could be especially important for determining who walks into Las Vegas as a champion, challenger, or surprise contender.

There has also been speculation that WWE could eventually turn the Royal Rumble into a two-night event, following the format it has used for WrestleMania and SummerSlam. For now, though, the expectation is that the 2027 Rumble will remain a one-night show.

If February 6 holds, WWE fans could be looking at a pretty wild weekend: Royal Rumble on Saturday, AEW Dynasty on Sunday, and the first major pieces of WrestleMania 43 falling into place.

Mike Judge sits in the pantheon of the greatest satirists the entertainment industry has ever known, producing smash hits and cult classic alike.

He delivered Office Space, Silicon Valley, King of the Hill and Beavis and Butt-Head, but not all of his creations are a rousing success – at least not at the box office. Twenty years ago today, Judge’s Idiocracy finally found a place in theaters in a limited run that kept the cult classic comedy from the masses.

20th Century Fox was hesitant to promote the film and only released it in a number of small markets, leading the film to gross just under $500,000 on a budget five times that amount.

In interview with Terry Crews he all but confirmed the speculation that 20th Century Fox did everything it could to make sure the film wouldn’t succeed at the box office and embarrass the corporations included in the movie.

“These companies gave us their name thinking they were gonna get ‘pumped up’, and then we’re like, ‘Welcome to Costco, we love you’. All these real corporations were like, ‘Wait a minute, wait a minute…’ A lot of people were trying to back out, but it was too late,” he said.

“And so Fox, who owned the movie, decided, ‘We’re going to release this in as few theaters as legally possible’. So it got a release in, probably, three theaters over one weekend and it was sucked out, into the vortex.”

Crews later revealed that he received praise from a number of the biggest names in the business like Will Ferrell, who loved his portrayal of President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho.

‘Idiocracy’ Named Among Best Comedy Movies of All Time

Variety ranked Idiocracy as the No. 86 best comedy movie of all time.

“If you think what’s going on in America right now happened from the top down, check yourself: The truth is that it happened just as much from the bottom up. And Mike Judge foresaw all that when he made his cracked satire of the dumbing down of America, conjuring a sick-joke vision of what it looks like when the USA hits bottom,” Variety wrote.

The movie owns a 71% from critics and 61% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes.
