HBO Confirms the End of Hit Series After 3 Seasons
Heading into Sunday night’s season 3 finale of the HBO hit series Euphoria, it was not clear whether or not there would be another season. However, shortly after the final episode of season 3 premiered, the network confirmed that there will not be a season four.
Following Sunday night’s episode, HBO has confirmed that Euphoria – one of the network’s most popular shows of all time – has officially come to an end.
Euphoria Has Been a Hit
Euphoria is an HBO drama following Rue Bennett (Zendaya), a teenage recovering addict navigating addiction, identity, and fractured relationships alongside a group of high school friends. Created by Sam Levinson and based on an Israeli miniseries, the show is known for its raw, stylized storytelling and immersive score.
The series has become one of HBO’s biggest hits, finishing second all-time in network viewership behind only Game of Thrones.
The show has been a hit with critics, as well, as the series collected nine Primetime Emmy wins, including two Lead Actress awards for Zendaya, who became the youngest actress to win that category twice. Season 3’s premiere drew 12.3 million viewers — up 44 percent from Season 2.
Officially the End
Though Zendaya had indicated in interviews that she believed the season would come to an end after season 3, Levinson would not commit one way or the other, telling the New York Times that he did not know whether or not there would be a fourth season and that he writes “every season like it’s the last.”
“I don’t know,” Levinson said. “As of right now, all I want to do is hang out with my wife and kids and read some Elmore Leonard and watch ‘Mrs. Miniver’ again.”
Even before the final episode of season 3 premiered, there was still no official confirmation as to whether or not it would be the series finale. However, shortly after the conclusion of Sunday’s episode, Levinson confirmed on Popcast, New York Times’ music podcast, that the series had indeed come to an end and there would not be a fourth season.
With that, Euphoria is not officially over after seven years and 26 episodes stretched across three seasons.
