Most Beginners Are Wasting Time on This Popular Conditioning Exercise, Trainer Says

When you’re new to the gym, it’s normal to feel both excited and overwhelmed by all the equipment. Between fancy machines, cardio equipment, dumbbells, and more, there’s a lot to try. But if you’re thinking about jumping straight into the battle ropes, one trainer says you might want to pump the brakes. While battle ropes look fun and are a great way to combine cardio with strength and conditioning, they can quickly lead to frustration and sore shoulders if you do them too soon, says Justin Kraft, founder of Aspire 2 More Fitness.

“What most people don’t realize is that battle ropes are sneaky. They don’t just ask your arms to move up and down. They demand shoulder stability, core control, and solid posture to keep the spine supported while the arms generate force,” Kraft says. “If any of those pieces aren’t ready, the ropes start pulling the body out of position. Before long, the lower back takes over, the shoulders shrug, and the whole thing turns into a frantic flail instead of a purposeful movement.”

Should Beginners Do Battle Ropes?

Battle ropes may not be the best option for beginners, but that doesn’t mean they’re off limits forever. They just require a solid foundation to actually be effective and safe. After all, you don’t want to get an injury from an exercise that’s supposed to benefit you.

For instance, rapid arm movements can overload the shoulders if stabilizers aren’t strong, and poor form often leads to lower-back compensation. Battle ropes also spike the heart rate quickly, which can be overwhelming for someone still building their conditioning base. And because the ropes are long and heavy, they can exaggerate any postural imbalances, especially rounded shoulders or weak glutes.

How to Progress to Battle Ropes

Before jumping into battle ropes, Kraft suggests building a foundation with the following exercises.

Dumbbell Arm Waves

“These aren’t glamorous, but they are perfect for practicing rhythm, posture, and shoulder control without the added pull of heavy ropes,” Kraft says.

How to Do It

  1. Hold a light dumbbell in each hand with arms at your sides.
  2. Move your arms up and down quickly in small, controlled waves.
  3. Keep your core engaged and shoulders relaxed throughout.

Planks

Plank

The stronger the core, the easier it is to keep the spine stable while the arms move quickly. There are tons of plank variations you can do, from basic high or low planks to side planks and plank shoulder taps.

How to Do It

  1. Get into a pushup position, either on your forearms or hands.
  2. Keep your body in a straight line from head to heels.
  3. Hold the position.

Farmer’s Carry

Farmer’s Carry

“Farmers carries teach grip strength, shoulder stability, and proper posture, which are the big three for making battle ropes feel natural,” Kraft explains.

How to Do It

  1. Hold a heavy dumbbell or kettlebell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Stand tall with shoulders back and core tight.
  3. Walk forward for a set distance or time, maintaining proper posture.

Starting from the floor takes pressure off the knees and helps the person focus on technique instead of balance.

How to Do It

  1. Sit on the floor or a bench with feet planted, holding a rope in each hand.
  2. Move your arms up and down quickly to create waves in the ropes.

Battle Rope Intervals

Rope Intervals

Instead of jumping into 30 to 45 second bursts, beginners can start with 10 to 12 seconds of controlled effort. Focus on quality before quantity.

“Eventually the movement gets smoother, the shoulders stay down, breathing stays steady, and the waves actually look like waves instead of chaotic splashes,” Kraft says. “At that point, the ropes become a fantastic way to condition the whole body without loading the joints.”

How to Do It

  1. Hold a rope in each hand with feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent.
  2. Rapidly move your arms up and down to create waves in the ropes, working for 10 to 12 seconds.
  3. Rest briefly, then repeat for multiple rounds.

The Announcement

In an exclusive appearance on ABC’s morning program, Sánchez Bezos shared that the family’s Day 1 Family Fund has committed $102.5 million in new grants this year to 32 nonprofits across the country. The foundation was founded in 2018 by the couple.

Awesome Baby! Dick Vitale, Charles Barkley to Share Airwaves Twice this College Basketball Season

Two iconic basketball broadcasters are going to be working together twice this season.

ESPN announced Monday it will have a college basketball broadcast featuring both Dick Vitale and Charles Barkley later this month on its network.

Then the two will work together again in March when the NCAA Tournament rolls around.

A historic pairing

Vitale and Barkley will join play-by-play man Dave O’Brien on Dec. 13 when the University of Kentucky plays host to Indiana in a regular season matchup of historic state neighbors and rivals.

Then they will be part of TNT Sports’ production of the First Four when the NCAA Tournament begins in Dayton, Ohio, in March.

“This is a unique opportunity for Dick and Charles, two of the biggest personalities in the game to be side-by-side calling games for the first time,” TNT Sports vice president Craig Barry said in a release. “This is great for the game and the fans, we can’t wait to see what unfolds.”

An odd couple?

While Vitale and Barkley might be the two most recognizable basketball analysts on the air today, they approach their craft in much different ways.

Vitale typically works games and does so with gusto, bringing incredible positivity to most of his messages.

Barkley, on the other hand, works almost exclusively in the studio for TNT and is known for his sometimes harsh takes on the state of basketball in general, especially the NBA.

Vitale first made his name as a coach for Detroit Mercy and then the Detroit Pistons.

He joined ESPN in 1979 when the network was first getting off the ground and became one of the faces of college basketball over the years.

However, he has not worked a regular TV broadcast in the NCAA Tournament since the network lost the rights to March Madness to CBS in 1991.

“Dick has meant so much to the game of basketball, and we have long felt he deserved an opportunity to call an NCAA Men’s Tournament game, and we are delighted he has finally agreed following several offers,” CBS Sports executive producer and VP of content Harold Bryant said in a release. “Having him call the game with Charles will be must-see TV and a great way to tip off the First Four.”

Barkley was a hall of fame player for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns, and Houston Rockets after starring in college at Auburn.

He’s been a fixture on TNT Sports’ Inside the NBA for 25 seasons, but that program is now licensed to ESPN after TNT lost the rights to broadcast NBA games earlier this year.

That relationship paved the way for the upcoming Vitale-Barkley mashup.

Whether the pairing fits one of Vitale’s catchphrases — “Awesome, baby!” or one from Barkley — “That’s terrible” — remains to be seen, but it’s a cool idea nonetheless.

Barkley last worked as a game analyst on Christmas Day 2017, according to SportsMediaWatch.com

  • Colorways Available: 2, both on sale
  • Sizes Available: S-2XL
  • Shell: 100% polyester
  • Insulation: 100% polyester
  • Best For: Cool days, cold days with an additional layer underneath

The Domus is a hoodless barn jacket crafted from 100% polyester, and it’s designed to keep you dry in wet weather. On the plus side, it’s stuffed with lightweight polyester insulation for added warmth on chilly days, and like any piece of Barbour outerwear, it’s damn handsome. The corduroy spread collar gives it a classic look, and the large snap-button patch pockets provide helpful storage for daily wear.

Want something a little more protective? Consider Barbour’s Hereford Waxed Cotton Jacket. Its waxed canvas fabric (a Barbour hallmark) will keep you dry in steady rain, and it looks amazing, even after years of wear. It also has polyester insulation for warmth.
