A 2,200-year-old mask fragment discovered by archaeologists in the ancient Greek city of Phanagoria, located on Russia’s Taman Peninsula, marks a huge step forward in understanding the region’s artistic and religious practices, Arkeonews reported.

Mask Was Commonly Used During Theatrical Performances

The mask, discovered by the Phanagoria Archaeological Expedition working with the Oleg Deripaska “Volnoe Delo” Foundation, is crafted from terracotta and depicts the left side of a traditional satyr’s face, with pronounced cheekbones, a large ear, and a thick beard. This sort of mask was commonly worn in “New Comedy” performances throughout the 2nd century B.C. Researchers were able to confirm, thanks to the mask’s sizing and artistic embellishments, that it was an authentic theatrical prop rather than a smaller votive mask.

Still visible on the mask are a blue-outlined eye and reddish beard and mustache, two primary characteristics of New Comedy masks. Because the masks were worn by actors to convey a number of competing emotions and characters, the colors and expressions of the mask served to distinguish one from the other. The design of the newly unearthed fragment of mask is closely related to historical depictions of Dionysus’s goat-footed servants.

Mask Reveals the Region’s Ancient Secrets

The mask indicates that the denizens of Phanagoria were accustomed to extravagant cultural celebrations and traditions, as well as religious ceremonies held to honor Dionysus. Researchers estimate that the terracotta mask was crafted sometime during the reign of Mithridates VI (120–63 B.C.), who named Dionysus as his divine patron. This led to a surge in Dionysus’ popularity, during which time his image proliferated on coins, votives, and ceramic artifacts as well as theatrical masks.

Interestingly, this mask is the first piece of archaeological evidence discovered which  indicates the presence of a theater in Phanagoria. “There is no doubt that Phanagoria had a theater,” said expedition leader Vladimir Kuznetsov. “We suggest it was located on a hill with a commanding view of the sea and the city of Panticapaeum—modern Kerch—the capital of the Bosporan Kingdom.”

Joshua Allen, who starred and won So You Think You Can Dance Season 4, has died. A family member confirmed the 36-year-old’s death on Tuesday, September 30, to TMZ.

A family member of Allen told the news outlet that the dancer was struck by a train and taken to a hospital near his home in Texas. Details state the Fort Worth Police Department had received a call that morning of the tragedy and is currenlty an ongoing investigation.

With reports of his death, Allen’s family asks for “privacy and prayers” from fans.

They noted on one of the final conversations they had with Allen, saying, “One of the last things he said was to keep God first at all times. You have to be real with yourself before you can be real with anybody else.”

Allen gained fame for appearing as a competitor in the Fox dance competition series, where he won first place, with the late Stephen “tWitch” Boss coming in second. He showed his versatility as a dancer with performances in hip-hop, Broadway, samba, contemporary, west coast swing, Viennese Waltz, rumba, Argentine tango, disco, lyrical jazz, and jive. 

After the competition, Allen continued his career and appeared as a feature dancer in Step Up 3D in 2010. He also appeared in the 2011 Footloose remake and TV series like Community and American Horror Story. In 2010, Allen was brought onto Season 2 of Dance Your Ass Off as one of the season’s pros.

Emmanuel Hurd, a choreographer and friend of Allen, posted a tribute on Instagram with the caption:  “You were the life of the party. You were Batman. Champion. One of the realest people I ever met. Kept it a stack every time and would make it right if you fell short. A real King. This one hurts deep.”

In 2016, Allen ran into trouble and was indicted for a felony assault charge of his then-girlfriend and assault with a deadly weapon. He was sentenced to one year in jail in 2017.

“You know, I think I’ve just known her for years,” Fallon said. “…And we’ve always had her on the show. I know her mom really well, and this is like from years ago. And so when this new album was announced, I think we just called everybody and said, ‘Please, please consider us! Please!’”

It’s a funny and probably mostly true breakdown from Fallon. For good measure, Swift has appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon several times, making it one of her most frequent late-night stops. She made her first appearance on Fallon’s show in Nov. 2009, and the most recent prior to the upcoming stop was in Oct. 2022, three days after the release of her album Midnights.
