A wealthy coastal community in California is facing problems after a large chunk of coastal bluff gave way, damaging the backyards of several seaside mansions this week. Photos show the houses mere feet from the bluff in Rancho Palos Verdes, which sits around 25 miles south of Los Angeles.

Houses Avoid Damage—for Now

“The coastal bluff essentially dropped approximately 30 to 40 feet,” said Rancho Palos Verdes City Manager Ara Mihranian to ABC7 Los Angeles, who preferred the term “isolated land subsidence” rather than a landslide. “And it’s in a crescent shape, and that crescent shape is approximately about 300 feet wide.”

No homes were directly damaged and no injuries were reported, according to the city manager. “There’s no indication that we’re going to have to red- or yellow-tag any of these structures. I do not see a need for any evacuations or need for people to not continue occupying the structure,” he said. ABC7 reported residents lounging by their pool just feet from the slide.

Area Faces Frequent Landslides

It’s hardly new for the residents of the larger Rancho Palos Verdes area. In the nearby Portuguese Bend area just a few miles away, residents have been battling geologic issues for decades. As The Guardian notes, homes have been damaged and destroyed by moving ground, and residents have seen intermittent gas and electricity interruptions as well as evacuation orders.

Mihranian, however, noted that this incident was unrelated to the larger Portuguese Bend slide, and said geologists are investigating to determine next steps. In the meantime, homeowners will have to contend with a potentially costly cleanup.

Shedeur Sanders may have been smiling during this interview, but his silence spoke volumes.

Shortly after the Cleveland Browns succinctly announced on Wednesday morning that rookie Dillon Gabriel would replace Joe Flacco as the team’s starting quarterback against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, reporters raced to Sanders’ locker to get his reaction to the news that he’ll remain the team’s third-string quarterback.

Sanders, the 144th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Colorado, smiled throughout the short interview as reporters peppered him with questions. His response? Sanders mimed the answers.

At one point, a reporter asked him if he could express his reaction vocally. He seemed to mouth that he couldn’t while sporting a grin.

Perhaps hoping it would be a short bit, reporters continued to ask him questions, to no avail. Sanders continued miming and smiling.

“What can you say?” a seemingly frustrated reporter asked, followed by a softball question from another reporter who asked how Flacco has been instrumental in his and Gabriel’s development as rookie quarterbacks.

Still, zilch.

While he may have been smiling, it’s clear Sanders, the son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, is frustrated over being passed over and remaining the third-string quarterback.

Just last week, Sanders voiced that he’s ready to play now, adding he’s “capable of doing better” than some current NFL quarterbacks.

The Browns, apparently, aren’t convinced.
