An actor who appeared in one of television’s longest-running western series has died at the age of 83. According to his wife, actor Randy Boone died on August 28. She noted the news by informing the Hollywood Reporter, and the actor and his family received a great outpouring of support.

Boone appeared in three seasons of NBC’s The Virginian from 1964 to 1966. He also appeared in other popular shows like “Cimarron Strip,” “It’s a Man’s World” and even starred in an episode of the original “Twilight Zone.”

How Did Boone Get His Start?

The North Carolina native began his acting career during his time in college at NC State in Raleigh. He received his first speaking role and proceeded to devote the rest of his career to appearing in films and movies.

In a book about the history of “The Virginian”, Boone said that he chose to “hitchhike around the country” for months before he found his way to Los Angeles, where he earned the role on the show.

He used the money he made from the show to purchase his horse, named Clyde.

“He acted very much like a real horse, and I got a lot of fan mail about how he didn’t stand still. He was spirited,” the actor said about the horse.

In addition to his acting career, Boone also enjoyed success as a musician. “Ramblin’ Randy,” his first album, was released in 1965. He collaborated with his co-star on “The Singing Stars of The Virginian” later that year as well.

What Else Did Boone Do In His Career?

Boone’s acting career would place him on more television shows and a select number of films, including “The Quest” with Kurt Russell, “Highway to Heaven” and “The Wild Pair.” After his acting career, Boone began working in construction in the 1980s.

Rick Lewis, one of Boone’s longtime friends, wrote a touching tribute to his late companion on social media.

“We started our friendship over a dozen years ago when he came back home for a little mini-show and Q&A at Sandhills Music Center. He still had that same country boy look and charisma as he did in the roles he played on TV decades earlier,” Lewis said.

“What an amazing story for such an amazing man from our little neck of the woods.”

As this year’s Burning Man festival comes to a close, authorities in Nevada are still searching for answers in the death of a man who was found “lying in a pool of blood” on Saturday night.

According to The New York Times, local authorities from the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene of the storied arts festival, which takes place in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, at approximately 9:14 p.m. on Saturday night. There, they encountered a festival-goer who was “obviously deceased,” according to Sheriff Jerry Allen.

Law enforcement’s arrival coincided with the beginning of the festival’s signature event, in which the “Man,” a large wooden effigy, is set ablaze. Several individuals who were in the nearby vicinity of the victim were interviewed by police.

Given that the festival takes place in a makeshift city that is constructed each year for Burning Man, which attracts an estimated 70,000 to 80,000 people, the logistics of the crime scene posed a challenge for police. As such, the Times reported that law enforcement called in both the forensic science team from the nearby Washoe County Sheriff’s Office as well as rangers from the Bureau of Land Management, the federal agency that manages the land where the festival takes place.

“Although this act appears to be a singular crime, all participants should always be vigilant of their surroundings and acquaintances,” Allen said in a statement at the time. “There is no further information available at this time but it will be released as appropriate to provide for communication, while still preserving the integrity of the complicated investigation of a crime in a city which will be gone by the middle of the week.”

On Sunday, Burning Man’s organizers issued a statement to festival-goers in which they confirmed the death of a “single white male adult” whose identity has not yet been released. “Burning Man is cooperating with law enforcement,” the statement continued. “The investigation is ongoing and the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office will be the primary source of further information. If you are in Black Rock City, do not interfere with law enforcement activity.”

Burning Man, which concludes today, continued on with its scheduled activities, though authorities did maintain a perimeter and are continuing to interview individuals.

Passengers on a Delta Air Lines flight out of Detroit bound for Shanghai got a little bit more than they bargained for on their journey.

Instead of a smooth, if not speedy, scheduled 16-hour flight, travelers were left with a 24-hour ordeal which included a 2,000-mile detour to Los Angeles after one of the plane’s pilots became ill.

According to the New York Post, Delta Air Lines Flight 389 left Detroit around 10:30 a.m. Saturday. About five hours into the flight, the aircraft was just south of Alaska when the pilot fell sick.

As a result, the decision was made to divert to Los Angeles, which was a three-hour flight from the plane’s location.

A long journey becomes longer

Los Angeles was chosen as an emergency landing spot because it is a major Delta hub, making it easier for a replacement pilot to be found.

The plane remained grounded for three hours at LAX before eventually taking off for Shanghai. Originally scheduled to land around 2 p.m. local time, the craft instead taxied in at 11 p.m.

“The flight landed without incident and taxied to the gate,” Delta Air Lines said in a statement. “We apologize to our customers for the delay in their travel.”

Not the first time this has happened

Thankfully, these occurrences are rare, but there have been other instances where a flight had to be diverted in order to take care of a sick pilot or passenger.

In fact, back in May, a Delta Air Lines flight from Detroit to Los Angeles was detoured to Minnesota because a dog aboard the plane was in distress.

“The safety of our customers and people comes before everything else at Delta. That’s why Delta flight 694 diverted to MSP to ensure a cabin pet that became ill received proper care,” Delta said at the time.

In total, the diversion caused about a two-and-a-half hour delay for passengers.

Chevy Chase had a little help from his co-stars during filming for the 1989 movie Christmas Vacation. The actor recently revealed that he couldn’t remember his lines in the classic holiday film during a scene in which his character, Clark Griswold, had a major meltdown over his disappointing Christmas bonus.

Speaking at the Chicago Fan Expo in August 2025, Chase, 81, admitted that his cast mates had to wear placards around their necks, displaying his lines during his character’s iconic rant about his “cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, d—less, hopeless, heartless, fat-a–, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey s—” of a boss.

“I had to cover all of those words,” Chase said at the fan event, per Entertainment Weekly. “Every one of them had a sign in front of ’em,”  he added of his co-stars, which included Beverly D’Angelo and Randy Quaid.

Chase, who actually wrote the dialogue for the classic scene, added, “They all had my lines in front of ’em. So, I just went from dirty word that I wrote to dirty word that I wrote, and this went on like that for a while. But it wasn’t actually that dirty, come to think of it. I had to come up with a lot of strange stuff, instead of, like, ‘You f—in’ this or that.'”

In the famous scene, Clark Griswold was stunned to open his Christmas bonus envelope to find that instead of the hefty check he was expecting, he was gifted a membership in the jelly of the month club. Clark’s ensuing tirade in front of his extended family is one of the funniest scenes in the movie.

In a 2015 interview with The Dinner Party Download, D’Angelo explained that the scene was camera blocked in a way that allowed each of the cast members to wear a rope around their neck with a cue card attached to it.

“The rant was divided into sections so that he could go all the way through from the beginning to end without a chance of forgetting his lines or flipping his lines,” she said,” They were all right there. So we didn’t have the lines in order exactly, and if you watch it, you can see him. His eyes go from character to character as he’s going on in the speech because we’ve got the lines there.”

D’Angelo also defended Chase, noting that the move had nothing to do with his acting ability.

“You hear those stories about how Marlon Brando would wear an earpiece, or he’d have like his lines stuck on the ceiling, or in a bowling ball, or something like that,” she said. “So, I want to make it clear that the fact that we were wearing cue cards was not about any actor’s incompetence. It had to do with our knowledge that the way to have Chevy sail was to have it there at his fingertips in case he needed it.”

Christmas Vacation was directed by Jeremiah Chechik, but it was originally supposed to be helmed by future Home Alone director Chris Columbus. But Chase did not sail through his initial meetings with Columbus.

In a 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, Columbus recalled two “bizarre” meetings he had with Chase that prompted him to quit the project. “I was signed on…and then I met Chevy Chase,” Columbus told the outlet. “Even given my situation at the time, where I desperately needed to make a film, I realized I couldn’t work with the guy.”

Columbus claimed that Chase didn’t seem to know who he was and “didn’t say anything” for the first half hour of their meeting before allegedly finally asking him, “’Wait a second. You’re the director?’… Oh, I thought you were a drummer.’ “

Their second meeting for dinner went just as poorly. “We spent two hours together, and I left the dinner and I thought, ‘There’s no way I can make a movie with this guy,’” Columbus told Vanity Fair. “First of all, he’s not engaged [in the conversation]. He’s treating me like s—t. I don’t need this. I’d rather not work again. I’d rather write.”

There’s a sense of hope and euphoria when using a quarter to hopefully win big on a scratch-off lottery ticket. It often leads to disappointment or making your money back, but an Ohio husband hit it big when a $5 scratch-off led to a $500K payday.

In a statement on Wednesday, August 27, by the Ohio state lottery, a man from Carrollton was coming home after he finished taking his wife to a series of appointments as part of her cancer treatment. The man, who remains anonymous, stopped by a local convenience store and bought a couple of $5 scratch-offs.

According to officials, he also found one last Best of 7’s scratch-off in a bin. It just so happens that the ticket was a winner worth $500,000, with him taking home roughly $360,000.

The scratch-off ticket is pretty straightforward, with the player scratching through three different games with 60 chances to win. It details the chance to win “up to $500,000,” with the Ohio husband winning it all.

The Ohio husband calls it a “dream,” and admits that his wife initially didn’t believe him when he told her the good news. His wife thought he had fallen, until he revealed he was in shock from winning half a million dollars. Still, his wife was skeptical until he checked the ticket through the Ohio Lottery app.

Some may want to try his trick to scratch-offs, with the man explainf his ticket selection strategy.

“I like the end of the roll, I’ll buy in the middle too, but always liked the end of the roll best,” he explained.

He told the lottery officials that winning the scratch-off has been a blessing, as the family has faced rising medical bills and expenses due to his wife’s ongoing battle with cancer. The lottery earnings can now go towards paying off some of the expenses, and he hopes to take his wife out to do something enjoyable once she feels better.
