The college football season is now underway for hundreds of programs around the country after an exciting Week 1 over Labor Day weekend.

Fans were treated to highlights and great plays from some of the best players and teams in the nation, but one player may have had the most important move of the weekend – and it had nothing to do with his play on the field.

Early Sunday morning, an Army football player and his father saw a car that crashed into a telephone pole. The cadet and his dad sprang into action, and they were able to make a life-saving intervention before the crashed car exploded into flames.

How Did The Rescue Take Place?

20-year-old Larry Pickett Jr. and his father were returning home from dinner when they saw the car on the side of the road. Pickett’s family was in West Point to watch him play in his first game of the season, Army’s double-overtime loss to Tarleton State on Friday night.

Larry Pickett Sr., the player’s father, told Raleigh’s WTVD that the decision to act was instant.

“There was no discussion. My son just jumped right into action,” Pickett Sr. said, despite live electrical wires around the car and scene of the crash.

“He mentioned his military training kicked in, and we pulled [the man] out. He took care of him on the side of the road until the police officers got there, and then the fire department got there shortly after.”

Pickett’s sister was able to capture the daring rescue on video, and her clip shows her brother and father pulling the man from the car and to safety just before the vehicle burst into flames.

The Fort Montgomery (NY) Fire Department noted that the vehicle was fully engulfed by those flames when they arrived at the scene. The fire department said that is still looking into the cause of the crash as well.

Top Names at Army React To Pickett’s Heroic Act

Since Pickett’s heroism, he’s been supported by several former and current members of the Armed Forces, who say that his actions exemplify what it means to be a soldier.

“We’re proud of the heroic actions taken Saturday night by Cadet Larry Pickett Jr. & his father who are seen pulling a driver to safety in a video online taken by the family,” said the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on social media.

“Their actions are the embodiment of the US Army values.”

“Larry’s heroic actions embody everything we strive to instill in our cadet-athletes — courage, selflessness, and a willingness to put others before themselves,” said Army’s football coach, Jeff Monken.

“In that critical moment, he didn’t think of himself, only of helping another person in need. We are incredibly proud of Larry for the way he represented his family, our Army Football brotherhood, and the values of West Point.”

Army’s athletic director Tom Theodorakis noted that “leadership, courage, and selfless service” were on display through Pickett’s actions.

“Proud to see these traits in action, on and off the fields of friendly strife. Count the brave,” he said.

Pickett contributed on the field in Army’s first game, but it’s the work he’s done outside of the box score that’s earned him recognition this week.

A 36-year-old Alaskan woman is currently hospitalized with serious injuries after being attacked by a bear while out jogging last week.

According to a press release from the Alaska Department of Public Safety, police in Kenai, Alaska were called to the scene of an apparent bear attack early last Tuesday morning.

“Investigation revealed a 36-year-old female departed her residence at 5:45am to go jogging and was near her driveway when the initial attack occurred,” the press release reads. “A neighbor came outside and located her. The victim was medivac to an Anchorage area hospital with serious injuries.”

Alaska Wildlife Trooper David Lorring told KTUU that the woman made it “probably 50 yards from her house” before she was attacked. The bear reportedly “dragged her approximately 100 yards down the road.”

Personnel from the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Kenai Police Department and Alaska Department of Fish and Game searched for the bear to no avail.

According to reports, the victim is Ariean Fabrizio Colton, a nurse and mother of three.

A ‘long road’ ahead

Colton, her husband, and their children had just relocated to Alaska earlier this summer, according to a GoFundMe started by her family.

So far, the fundraiser has brought in over $83,000 toward its $100,000 goal. The page says Colton is stable, but has suffered “severe injuries that will require extensive surgeries and a long hospital stay.”

An update on Saturday said Colton made it through her first surgery with a positive prognosis but a lengthy recovery still ahead.

“We are so appreciative of all donations, prayers, and well wishes on Ariean’s behalf,” the update reads. “Ariean has had her initial surgery and the doctors are positive and hopeful. It is still a long road to recovery, so please continue providing support and sharing this link.”

Bear safety tips to consider

Whether heading out into the wilderness or living in an area where bears may be present, it’s important to exercise caution regarding these creatures.

In 2021, Bill Hunt, the Resource Conservation Manager for Banff National Park, spoke with Men’s Journal about some important bear safety advice to remember.

“It is your responsibility as a user of the wilderness,” Hunt said. “Get to know your seasonal hazards and plan your recreation around that.”

Hunt also recommends avoiding feeding bears and giving out “improper food signals,” which could cause the animals to come back looking for a meal.

Additionally, Hunt says humans should make their presence known when out in the wilderness so bears are not surprised when they see them.

“When you are out on the trails, make a lot of noise,” Hunt said. “We don’t recommend bear bells, we recommend yodeling or ‘hoot- hooting.’ Make it loud, make it travel far enough that a bear can hear you.

“There is lots of camera data showing humans and bears literally minutes apart on trails; if a bear can hear you coming, they will most often get out of the way. But if you surprise a bear, that is when a surprise encounter occurs—you and the bear are then inclined to react poorly.”

Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning entered Saturday’s game against the Ohio State Buckeyes as one of the most hyped players in recent memory. Unfortunately, he did not seem to live up to the expectations, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a bright future ahead.

Following what was a lackluster performance from the young quarterback, NFL legend Tom Brady offered his assessment of what he saw from watching Manning’s start against the Buckeyes.

While Brady himself admits it wasn’t exactly a strong showing from Manning, he’s not willing to give up on the young quarterback just yet.

High Expectations

Though Manning had never served as a full-time starting quarterback until Saturday, experts placed soaring expectations on his shoulders before the game, thanks in large part to his famous last name that he shares with his uncles Peyton and Eli, both Super Bowl champion quarterbacks.

Manning entered the season as the quarterback of the top-ranked team in the country, favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, and the projected No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

When Manning took the field on Saturday, however, he looked much more like a young player making his first real start in a hostile environment.

Manning completed just 17 of 30 passes, with the vast majority of those completions coming behind or within just two yards of the line of scrimmage. Throughout the game, he looked confused, missed some easy passes, threw a crucial interception, and couldn’t lead the Longhorns to any points until late in the fourth quarter.

Tom Brady Weighs In

During an appearance on the Pro Football Focus YouTube channel over the weekend, Brady opened up a little bit about what he saw from Manning as well as some of the criticism the young quarterback received.

“A lot of these guys, they’re so young. And with social media and Twitter and Instagram, you can make someone look so great, and you can tear them down so quick,” Brady said. “Before, it used to be that you had to wait until the paper comes out the next day to make a real evaluation. But in the digital era, it happens in five seconds.”

While the criticism that Manning has received obviously is not fun, Brady thinks he can also use it to his advantage and grow from it.

“I think there’s a blessing and a curse in some of it. The curse is a lot of people pile on. The blessing is [that] there needs to be resilience built up in the quarterback as well,” Brady said. “So even though he didn’t have his best game today, and they lost, if he uses this to his advantage, Arch, he’s going to be tougher for it. And he’s going to have a better next game because of it.”

Brady went on to explain that he thinks quarterbacks like Manning have a lot on their plates at such a young age while they’re still developing.

“I always felt like you’ve got to deal with a lot of adversity from a quarterback standpoint — to toughen you up to be the true leader for the organization,” Brady continued. “And unfortunately, these kids now at 19 years old or 20, they’re forced to be the leaders of a college organization. And it was probably more the head coach [before], but because now there’s so many people moving every year in college, it’s really thrust upon that quarterback position to do that. And they’re young in their development.”

Brady went on to make it very clear that he still thinks Manning could have a bright future ahead of him if he bounces back, and he thinks that Manning has already shown that he’s capable of doing that.

There’s a long season to play out. Arch has years beyond this to still play in college, if he wants. But it’s going to be up to him to see how he really wants to dig within himself, and how deep he wants to dig, in order to be successful. But there’s nothing to show me that he won’t be that. He’s been that way in high school and even last year. And he’s got a lot of good people around him that know exactly what to do.”

The 2025 Venice Film Festival included Jacob Elordi and the cast of Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein walking carpet and the movie debut that was met with a standing ovation. But Elordi is under fire after a TikTok video went viral after his encounter with one of the festival’s staff members.

In the video, he’s seen getting into a heated argument with the official on Saturday as he was trying to greet fans and take photos.

“I’m going to take a picture right here,” Elordi told the official. “Don’t ever tell me what to do.”

The original poster of the TikTok video captioned it, “and he was so nice, took photos with everyone he can.” But fans couldn’t help but comment that Elordi was out of line with the staff member and was acting rude.

“Poor guy he was just doinghis job,” said one commenter.

“I find it to be a little disrespectful towards old man trying to do his job unless if they have an understanding which may be a friendliest reminder while being occupied by fans,” said another.

Another chimed in, “He could’ve at least addressed the bodyguard in a more civil manner. “I understand that you’re trying to do your job, and I appreciate that, but please allow me to do mine.”

Some commentors saw both sides of the situatuon, with one adding, “For people that don’t know, Jacob is right. Body guards often work for teams and not the celeb directly, and try to control them. If there was danger the guard woulda moved him by force.”

Elordi stars as the Creature, the tragic being brought to life by Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac) in Frankenstein. The movie will have a limited theatrical release on October 17, 2025, followed by a global release on Netflix on November 7, 2025.

Recently, I had the opportunity to try both Campbell’s Chunky Pabst Blue Ribbon Soups. While I appreciate a good chili, the Campbell’s Chunky x Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer Cheese with Potatoes and Chorizo Soup is my favorite.

The soup has good creaminess. While it does not have the thick consistency of a beer cheese dip, it satisfies a craving for heartier soup without being too dense.

Since it is a beer cheese soup, the PBR maltiness adds a hint of sweetness and a touch of hoppy bitterness. It keeps the cheese flavors from becoming too rich and one note. This soup is not a bowl of melted cheese with a splash of beer. It has a complexity which makes it versatile.

Personally, I liked serving it with a warm pretzel instead of crackers. Being able to dip the bread into the soup is quite tasty. A sourdough bread would be an equally good pairing.

Since the potato pieces are substantial, this soup does not work as a dip. But, adding some extra sausage or a handful of shredded cheese on top would make the meal even more substantial.
