The National Weather Service issued a new winter storm warning as parts of California are set to be hit with heavy rain and snow in the coming days.

“A lead mid to upper level trof will move into central California Thursday, followed by a much stronger system strengthening off the northern California/Pacific Northwest coast Friday and Saturday,” the National Weather Service said, while revealing the potential for “heavy rains” along the California Coast Ranges and through the Sierra Thursday.

Those rains pose the risks of flooding across areas that have already seen much above average precipitation over the past few weeks.

Southern California Set to Receive Heavy Rain and Snow

The National Weather Service revealed Southern California will see the greatest risk of flooding.

“There will be a brief respite to heavy rains across California early Friday before the strengthening storm off the Northern California/Pacific Northwest coast sends additional heavy precipitation into Central to Northern California and southwest Oregon late Friday into early Saturday, with an increasing flood risk for northwest California at this time,” the NWS said.

While heavy rains are expected, the NWS is also calling for up to 28 inches of snow and 40 mph winds in the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Yosemite National Park.

The cities of cities of Shaver Lake, Devils Postpile, Wawona, Tuolumne Meadows, Florence Lake, Huntington Lake, Cedar Grove, Lake Thomas Edison, and Lake Wishon were all hit with a weather warning ahead of the storm, which is expected to hit from early Saturday morning into Sunday.

The National Weather Service warned that “travel could be very difficult to impossible” and drivers should “slow down and use caution while traveling.”

Walmart

Walmart stores were closed on Christmas, but they’re expected to be on New Year’s Day. Most Walmart stores will also have their regular business hours.

Target

Target is another major retailer that was closed on Christmas Day, but they’re open for regular operating hours on New Year’s Day. Some select locations may go outside this norm, so check with your local store for their hours.

Home Depot

Home Depot stores will be open on New Year’s Day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to the company’s website.

Lowe’s

For  New Year’s Day 2026, most Lowe’s stores are expected to operate on a reduced holiday schedule. So, check the local store listing on Lowe’s website or app for the hours at the Lowe’s location near you.

BJ’s Wholesale Club

BJ’s stores and gas stations will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to their official website. Tire bays and optical will also be open.

Whole Foods Market

According to the official Whole Foods website, most locations will be open on New Year’s Day, but some stores may have reduced hours. Check with your local store to get the details.

ShopRite

ShopRite stores will be open on New Year’s Day, but their hours may vary by location, according to a statement from the retailer.

2025 is over, but some parts of the United States are starting the new year with the same brutal weather that marked the end of the old one.

Over the last several days, the Great Lakes region has been blasted by heavy snow, and the flakes are projected to continue falling in some spots through the weekend.

“More persistent lake effect snow showers are likely Thursday into Friday downwind of lake Erie, Ontario and the eastern portion of Lake Superior,” the National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Prediction Center said Thursday. “This will support very heavy snow potential across far northwest Pennsylvania, far western New York State and portions of northwest New York State and over the eastern portion of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.”

New York in particular is in the crosshairs of this weather event. Parts of the state are bracing for up to 48 inches of snow.

Winter Storm Warning in effect

According to the NWS map, areas of New York State surrounding Lake Erie and Lake Ontario are under a “Winter Storm Warning” until 7 a.m. ET Saturday.

Wayne and northern Cayuga Counties may see 1-to-2 feet of snow, with up to three feet locally. Travel will be “very difficult to impossible in the heaviest bands of snow with near zero visibility and deep snow cover on roads,” says the NWS Buffalo office.

Up to 48 inches of snow possible elsewhere

A separate “Winter Storm Warning” for Oswego, Jefferson and Lewis counties says Oswego County may see as much as four feet of snow from now until Saturday morning.

“The greatest additional snow amounts will focus across Oswego County,” the NWS alert said. “Additional snowfall in Jefferson County will only be across the far southern end of the county, and in Lewis County only in the far southwest corner of the county, with minimal amounts elsewhere.”

From now through Friday morning, lake effect snow may fall at a rate of 1-to-2 inches per hour off Lake Erie, with snow falling 3-to-5 inches per hour off Lake Ontario through Friday.

One irritating thing about the discussion around EV savings to be made, it treats different use cases the same. But they’re not. Most EV charging cost talk is built for people with a driveway. One clean price, easy math, smug savings. If you live in an apartment, that story often doesn’t apply. You don’t get “home electricity.” You get whatever charger you can reach, whatever price it posts, and whatever time it steals.

The numbers are moving, too. In the latest EIA electricity price table (October 2025 data), the U.S. average residential rate sits around 18 cents per kWh. Public fast charging sits way higher. Paren’s Q3 2025 fast-charging pricing report pegs the national average at about 49 cents per kWh.

If you can charge at home, that 18-49 gap is your advantage. If you can’t, it’s an apartment-dweller penalty. If you own an EV and live in an apartment, you need a routine, or your EV turns into a convenience purchase instead of a money saver.

Apartment EV Charging Feels Like a Rip-Off Because the System Is Built That Way

Apartment EV charging usually turns into a juggling act: workplace charging if you’re lucky, public Level 2 if you can find it, and DC fast charging when you’re boxed in. The charging hardware matters less than the pattern. You want steady Level 2 access. You want fast charging to stay rare.

Fast chargers mess with your instincts. They look like gas pumps, so you treat them like gas pumps. The problem is you’re paying for speed and location at a premium rate. At roughly 49 cents per kilowatt-hour, the “cheap to run” pitch starts to sound like it came with an asterisk.

The fix is simple, even if the lifestyle isn’t.

Replace home charging with a reliable Level 2 routine. Workplace charging is the cleanest substitute. If your job offers it, take it seriously. When most of your weekly miles come from electrons you pick up while you’re already there, your EV stays cheap.

If work charging isn’t an option, go hunting for Level 2 that fits your life instead of taking over your life. A gym, grocery store, garage near home, or a regular parking spot can do the job. The DOE charging station guide spells out why Level 2 exists for longer stops. That’s your angle: charge while you’re already busy.

Use DC fast charging like a tool, not a routine. Show up with a lower battery so the charger runs hard, then leave before the session slows down. Long top-offs cost more and waste more time. If you fast charge often, a membership plan can reduce the sting. If you don’t, skip the subscription clutter.

Be honest about your driving. If you drive less, you can live with public charging because you’ll buy fewer sessions. If you drive a lot and you can’t lock down predictable Level 2 access, you’ll pay premium rates more than you expect.

My Verdict

If you’re an apartment dweller, the EV can still work, but you need to treat charging access like the whole deal. Level 2 is your lifeline. Fast charging is the emergency lever. If your plan is “whatever fast charger is open,” you’re signing up for higher costs, more waiting, and a lot less of that promised EV advantage.

The Netflix epic Stranger Things has finally come to a close, and depending on how much you were thinking about this ahead of time, things turned out pretty much how you might have expected. The tenth Fleetwood Mac album, released in 1975, was just called Fleetwood Mac. Sometimes, the live version of “Landslide” is popular, which was featured on the 1988 live album The Dance. But the Stranger Things kids couldn’t have had that version because it wasn’t really released until 1998. So, right now, they’re caught in the landslide between 1975 and 1998.

Kostek has opened up about feeling judged by NFL girlfriends because, despite their lengthy relationship, she is still not Gronkowski’s wife.

“I felt like I was seen as a lesser-than girlfriend because I didn’t have a ring on my finger,” she said on Kristin Cavallari’s Honestly Cavallari: The Headline Tour, according to The New York Post.
