When this 1980 movie hit theaters, it was widely panned by critics, underperformed at the box office, and was even infamously nominated for two insulting awards. That is stunning since The Shining now routinely lands on lists of the greatest films ever made.

‘The Shining’ Was Hated and Flopped in 1980

As of March 2026, Empire Magazine’s reader-voted list of the best movies of all time placed The Shining at number 34. Similarly, Variety’s 2022 expert-formulated ranking of the greatest films ever has it listed at number 90, while The Guardian named it the fifth-best horror movie of all time. These are only three of many examples of times The Shining has been singled out as one of cinema’s greatest titles.

It would be an understatement to say that The Shining got an extremely different reception after it opened on May 23, 1980. For example, a May 2020 The Independent article noted that the movie wasn’t embraced by filmgoers after it was released. It highlighted that despite ultimately grossing roughly $45 million domestically, it wasn’t even a top 10 hit in the U.S. Considering it was based on a book from a famous writer, Stephen King, was helmed by the acclaimed director Stanley Kubrick, and was headlined by a major movie star, Jack Nicholson, that is stunning.

Many movie critics were unimpressed with The Shining when it first came out. The Hollywood Reporter’s 1980 review of the film is a clear example of that, as Arthur Knight wrote that the movie lacked the artistic significance he hoped for. “I tried to penetrate that significance in this outing, but I kept drawing a blank.” The critic went on to write that the film failed as a horror movie. “I don’t think it works too well as an experiment in Gothic horror either.” He saved his harshest criticism for the film’s script, noting that the supernatural elements of the story felt unexplained. “Alas, it isn’t there! The screenplay, as written by Kubrick and Diane Johnson, never lets us in on what motivated these events.”

Perhaps the most striking example of how The Shining was lambasted at the time of its release is the two dubious awards it was nominated for. In 1981, Kubrick was nominated at the Golden Raspberry Awards for Worst Director, and Shelley Duvall was given the nod for Worst Actress. Amazingly enough, Duvall’s nomination was seen as so egregious that it was rescinded decades later, in 2022.

Looking back at all the criticism that The Shining received in 1980, the harsh reaction almost feels like a work of fiction today. After all, it is hard to fathom how one of the most celebrated movies that has ever been produced was ripped apart by contemporary viewers.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is just hours away from sending astronauts to the moon for the first time in more than 50 years.

Artemis II, a follow up to the 2022 Artemis I uncrewed mission, is sending four astronauts on humanity’s deepest venture into space since the 1972 Apollo 17 mission landed on the moon.

While Artemis II won’t be landing on the moon, it sets the stage for the upcoming Artemis III test flight in 2027, Artemis IV landing in 2028, and NASA’s plans to set up a lunar base.

Astronauts Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch Offer Final Message

Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, and mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen will launch from Pad 39B at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center spacecraft atop NASA’s SLS (Space Launch System) rocket, taking the Orion spacecraft on a 10-day test flight around the moon.

Koch and Wiseman both took to social media to offer a final message before launch on Wednesday night.

Koch, who set a record for the longest spaceflight by a woman with a total of 328 days in space, gave a full to-do list for fans to follow along with throughout the day.

“Tomorrow’s To do list,” she started with a photo showing the rocket that will take her to the moon in the background.

Artemis II Launch Details

The current target for takeoff is a two-hour launch window that opens at 6:24 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

The weather forecast for launch day shows an 80% chance of favorable weather conditions with primary concerns being cumulus clouds, ground winds, and solar weather. “NASA and weather officers with the U.S. Space Force’s Space Launch Delta 45 will continue to monitor the weather leading up to liftoff,” NASA said on its website.

NASA is providing launch day updates on its website, which shows everything has gone smoothly through the first few hours of Wednesday morning.

The ‘1965 Experience Package’

The 1960s suite, part of the hotel’s dramatic $100 million renovation, was created in collaboration with The Greater Boston Vintage Society, which designed the suite with pops of color, including geometric-patterned pillows, an orange-patterned rug, a lava lamp, and a mustard-yellow tufted sofa. The room’s curated décor also includes a vintage record player, rotary-style clock, an original mid-century TV console, and a classic Eames-style lounge chair.

The sleek walnut coffee table is adorned with a Beatles Forever photo book and a real Life magazine. Side tables feature Archie’s Double Digest magazine, and a bowl filled with replica vintage Sheraton Boston postcards, with postage included for that snail-mail vibe.

Wall décor includes newspaper clippings from April 1965, when the hotel opened its doors.

The bedroom features a king bed with retro-inspired linens and playful accent pillows in shades of orange, rust, and gold.

Want to keep the 60s vibe going outside the suite? The Greater Boston Vintage Society includes nearby retro-inspired recommendations, including Kings Dining & Entertainment, which offers a modern twist on the retro bowling experience. The venue is just steps away from the hotel.

There’s also Wusong Road Tiki Bar, a maximalist escape into mid-century tiki culture, tucked just outside Harvard Square.

“In collaboration with the Sheraton Boston team, we curated a suite that reflects the hotel’s debut era with authenticity and style,” said Jason Volk, also known as “Mr. Vintage,” founder of The Greater Boston Vintage Society. “By weaving in genuine mid-century pieces, we created a space that celebrates the timeless design of the 1960s while sparking fond memories of familiar furnishings guests may recall from their own childhoods.”

How to Book The ‘1965 Experience Package’

The 1960s suite can be booked through April, and it accommodates up to two guests. The suite is located on a high floor with sweeping views of the Charles River.

Some of the perks include two tickets to View Boston at Prudential Center, which, like Sheraton Boston, also opened its doors in 1965, and offers direct access to the hotel. Some welcome goodies include two root beer floats and two friendship bracelet-making kits.

The $100 Million Renovation

Sheraton Boston completed its gargantuan renovation last year, offering a new lobby, semi-private booths, guest rooms, meeting spaces, and the heart and soul of the hotel — Henderson, a new restaurant named in honor of Sheraton co-founder and Harvard alum Ernest Henderson.

Adjacent to the lobby are The Studios, a row of private rooms designed for business travelers or remote workers who need to step into one for impromptu Zoom calls. The glitzy lobby features lounge seating and boardroom setups accentuated by warm woods, rich textures, and inviting tones.

The renovation also transformed the hotel’s pool deck, which is Boston’s largest hotel lap pool. The facility features a retractable roof for panoramic views of the iconic Prudential Center, whether you’re in the pool, by the poolside lounge chairs, or in private cabanas.

Jerry Maguire is set to return to the big screen for its 30th anniversary.

TriStar Pictures, the label under Sony Pictures, is rereleasing the 1996 sports romantic-comedy in select theaters on April 12, 14, and 15.

The film follows Jerry Maguire, a successful sports agent whose career goes south after he writes a manifesto criticizing his firm’s profit-over-people approach. Fired for his ideals, he builds a new agency from scratch, accompanied by Dorothy Boyd, a 26-year-old single mother and the only colleague who was willing to follow him.

Cameron Crowe wrote and directed, with James L. Brooks producing. The film’s cast included: Tom Cruise as the title character, Renee Zellweger as Dorothy, Cuba Gooding Jr. in his Oscar winning role, and Bonnie Hunt as Dorothy’s sister, Laurel.

Jerry Maguire was a massive box office success when it first hit theaters. It grossed nearly $275 million worldwide on a $50 million budget, becoming the ninth highest grossing film of 1996. 

Additionally, it ended up being an Awards season favorite. The film earned five Academy Award nominations, including best picture, best actor for Cruise, best original screenplay for Crowe, and best editing. Gooding Jr. took home the Oscar for best supporting actor. It also earned nominations from the Critics Choice Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards (now called the Actor awards), and the Golden Globes.

The film produced a plethora of iconic lines that earned a place in the culture and have been quoted ever since. Today once described it as the most quotable film of all time. “Show me the money” landed at number 25 on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 greatest movie quotes of all time, with “you had me at hello” falling close behind at number 52.

It may sound like an April Fools’ joke, but on April 1, 1986, a synth-pop song about Mozart complete with German rap verses was No. 1 in the U.S.: “Rock Me Amadeus” by Falco.

Austrian singer Falco was hugely popular in Europe, but it wasn’t until this single off his third studio album that he hit major success on this side of the Atlantic.

“Rock Me Amadeus” is quintessentially ’80s, with a new wave sound evocative of Eurythmics and Depeche Mode. Aside from its famed chorus, the entire song’s lyrics are in German — and Falco raps them. In fact, “Rock Me Amadeus” is the only German rap song — or German song, period — to top the Billboard Hot 100, per Songfacts. Another German-language song came close two years prior, though: “99 Luftbaloons” by Nena peaked at No. 2.

When you translate the lyrics of “Amadeus” into English, you realize that Falco is making a bold declaration about Austria’s most famous composer. “He was the first punk to ever set foot on this earth,” Falco raps. “… He lived so fast he had to die so young.” The whole song compares the hoity-toity Mozart to the tattooed and mohawked punks of the ’80s like Sid Vicious and Glenn Danzig. And most English-speaking Americans had no idea.

Unfortunately, Falco’s American success was short-lived. While his next single, “Vienna Calling” peaked at No. 18 and his album, Falco 3, peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, Falco faded just as quickly as he appeared. Nonetheless, “Rock Me Amadeus” remains a quintessential example of a one-hit wonder.

“But the important things in a career, I have found, are the downs, not the highlights,” Falco told the Los Angeles Timesin 1986. “I think a lot of talented artists broke down after the first real huge hit. They just panic.”

Falco continued to release music and chart in Austria until his death in 1998.

A popular pizza chain is being sold the same year as it hits its 80th anniversary as a business. It’s always sad to see a beloved restaurant change ownership, but that’s even more the case when it’s a restaurant that’s been around for decades.

So, it’s certainly bittersweet to see this pizza chain sold, but at least it will continue its legacy under new ownership and remain one of the many pizza options out there.

Detroit-Style Pizza Chain Officially Sold

Buddy’s Pizza, which has been a favorite for Detroit-style pies since 1946, has been bought out by a Detroit-based group. Saber Ammori, Andrew Dickow and Kevin Denha are the new owners, and they say that they grew up with Buddy’s Detroit-style pizza and see it as a focal point of the area.

“For us, this is deeply personal,” Dickow said in a statement. “I still remember walking to Buddy’s as a kid and grabbing a slice. The crust had that unmistakable crunch, the pizza felt premium in a way nothing else did, and it was the highlight of my day.” He continued, “Buddy’s has always been more than a meal. It is a part of Detroit’s fabric, and for a lot of us, it is tied to family, tradition, and memory.”

On top of Ammori, Dickow and Denha, other Detroit-based entrepreneurs are part of the investment group.

“We take immense pride in the team members who have built and sustained Buddy’s for generations,” Ammori added. “Our goal is not to change what makes Buddy’s special, but to reinforce it.”

He continued, “That starts with our employees, our commitment to authentic Detroit-style pizza, and delivering the level of customer service that our guests have come to expect from a brand with this kind of heritage.”

New Pizza Venture is a ‘Meaningful Opportunity’

Dickow also chimed in, stating that the new owners “see a meaningful opportunity to thoughtfully grow our frozen pizza offering so customers across the country can enjoy the same product experience that has made Buddy’s a Detroit staple for nearly 80 years.”

Buddy’s Pizza is a longtime pizza brand based in Detroit. When it comes to what makes a pizza Detroit-style, Buddy’s states it’s “the same things that made Detroit – a little bit of ingenuity, some stubborn spirit and a whole lot of hear.” They continue, “It’s what sparked an original idea back in 1946 to take a steel auto pan, create something new and make Buddy’s the birthplace of Detroit-style Pizza.”

Spring might officially have started, but there are still several states in the path of heavy snow this week. At least six states are expected to see at least a foot of snow starting on Wednesday, April 1 – and no, this isn’t an April Fool’s Day joke.

The National Weather Service’s latest forecast shows California, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming are all expected to see 12 inches of snow or more in the coming days.

“A surface cyclone will cross inland into Washington/Oregon on Wednesday, and will then become conglomerated with the frontal system in the Northern Rockies,” the National Weather Service said. “This is expected to bring precipitation in the Rockies and Pacific Northwest in the form of rain, and wintry mix in regions of higher elevation.”

“Heavy mountain snow is also expected as the fronts move through. On Thursday, the associated cold front is forecast to move through the Northwest and Great Basin, bringing in cooler temperatures and more widespread snowfall, as opposed to snowfall confined to higher elevations.”

Up to 30 Inches of Snow, 100 mph Winds Coming for 6 States

California: Regions near Blue Canyon are expected to see the highest snowfall with total snow accumulations five to 12 inches near the crest, including Donner Pass. Locally higher accumulations over peaks are expected with winds gusting as high as 55 mph.

Colorado: Cities of Skyway, Aspen, Snowmass, Vail, Vail Pass, Minturn, Crested Butte, Taylor Park, Marble, Monarch Pass, and McClure Pass are expected to see between six and 12 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph are in the forecast.

Nevada: Snow accumulations of six to 12 inches above 8,000 ft, with locally up to 14 inches. Near Lake Tahoe winds are expected to reach up to 100 mph bringing strong waves as high as six feet.

Oregon: The heaviest snowfall is expected to hit in Oregon with 24 to 30 inches in Crater Lake National Park. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph over high and exposed terrain are possible. Meanwhile, Toketee Falls, Union Creek, Diamond Lake, and Crescent Lake are also expected to see heavy snow with 18 to 24 inches possible.

Utah: For the northern mountains, total snow accumulations up to three to seven inches, with upwards of eight to 14 inches in the upper Cottonwood Canyons. Meanwhile, for the central and southern mountains, total snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches, with upwards of 18 inches in the Tushar Mountains and Brian Head area.

Wyoming: High elevation snow expected with total snow accumulations between 6 and 12 inches mainly above 9,000 feet in elevation. Winds are forecast to gust as high as 45 mph.

Travel Warning Issued by National Weather Service

The National Weather Service included a special warning for Oregon as it prepares for several feet of snow.

“Persons should delay all travel if possible. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility,” the warning reads. “Leave plenty of room between you and the motorist ahead of you, and allow extra time to reach your destination. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and be especially cautious on hills or when making turns. Make sure your car is winterized and in good working order.”

The heaviest snowfall in Oregon is expected from Wednesday morning through Thursday morning.
