Though it’s their 1976 album Hotel California that’s generally considered their best work, American rock band Eagles first broke into the rock scene with their self-titled debut four years earlier. The album, which is often overshadowed by other contemporary releases, was an enormous success that paved the way for one of the defining rock voices of the ’70s.

Eagles had only just been formed in 1971 when they were sent by record executive David Geffen to Colorado in order to bond and develop their sound. While the band clearly had talent, it took a while for them to find the unique country/rock sound that would eventually drive them to the top of the charts.

Lead singer Glenn Frey and lead guitarist Bernie Leadon initially had different visions of the band, with Frey seeking a classic rock-and-roll sound while Leadon wanted to incorporate more elements of traditional country music. During their time in Colorado, they managed to blend the two genres together and eventually persuaded record producer Glyn Johns to produce their debut record (via History of the Eagles).

Initially, Johns had been put off by the band’s lack of cohesion when they first arrived in Colorado. Frey and Leadon’s differing visions of the group made it difficult to market them as a rock band, but that all changed when he heard them play their song “Take the Devil”.

“There it was, the sound,” Johns said. “Extraordinary blend of voices, wonderful harmony sound, just stunning.”

The band travelled to London with Johns to record the album, taking turns providing harmonies and experimenting with acoustic instrumentals to blend the Frey’s preferred classic rock sound with elements of country and blues.

The record was an immediate success, with critics praising the unique production and charming vocal performances from the entire band. It rose to No. 22 on the Billboard 200 in its second week, cementing the Eagles as undisputed rising stars within the rock world. Lead singles “Take it Easy” and “Witchy Woman” also broke into the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In the years since its release, Eagles has frequently been ranked among the greatest albums ever recorded. Rolling Stone placed the record at No. 207 on their famous ranking, making Eagles one of the few bands to have multiple entries on the list alongside Hotel California.

Last week, the fast food chain announced the return of its Red, White & Blue Slush Float, a summer tradition back in time for America’s 250th birthday.

The Red, White & Blue Slush Float combines “icy blue raspberry slush, creamy vanilla soft serve and real strawberries” for $2.50. This year, the treat will be served in limited edition cups featuring U.S. landmarks to honor the country’s 250th anniversary.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will begin on Thursday, June 11, with Mexico and South Africa squaring off. Ahead of soccer’s ultimate showcase, Roku is launching a way for fans to access important World Cup news, highlights, scores and more all in one spot.

On Monday morning, Roku announced the creation of Roku Soccer Zone, a “centralized hub that brings together live games, highlights and other coverage, so you spend less time searching and more time in the game.”

Launched in partnership with FOX One, Roku Soccer Zone will be available in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and the United Kingdom.

It will provide services such as live scores and match updates, an updating stats track that keeps tabs on the tournament’s top scorers and assist leaders, the ability to pick “favorites,” so you can follow and receive reminders about preferred teams, and free, ad-supported content from channels like Fox Sports and FIFA+.

“The Soccer Zone makes watching your favorite teams simple,” Roku said in a press release provided to Men’s Journal. “Instead of hunting through different apps, you can find every live match in one place — easily see the soccer content available on apps you already pay for, like FOX One or Peacock, to start watching with one click.”

Additionally, the Soccer Zone will provide direct subscription opportunities through Roku. Eligible customers will also be able to sign up for a three-day free trial to FOX One through The Roku Channel.

America getting its World Cup closeup

For the first time in 32 years, the United States will serve as the FIFA World Cup host nation, alongside Canada and Mexico. In total, there are 16 host cities throughout the three countries–11 in America, three in Mexico and two in Canada.

Group play begins June 11, with the knockout stage getting underway June 29. Semifinals are set for July 14-15 in Arlington and Atlanta, with the World Cup final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

On June 1, 1974, in Ottawa, Canada, one of the defining rock stars of the 1990s was born. Alanis Morissette would later dominate charts in both Canada and the United States with her breakthrough rock album, Jagged Little Pill, cementing her as a defining voice of her generation.

Morissette released her debut self-titled record at just seventeen years old, and quickly developed a cult following in her home country. The singer became known for her gritty lyrics and emotive voice, which separated her from a lot of mainstream rock stars in the ’90s. The album’s lead single, “Too Hot”, broke into the Top 20 on Canada’s RPM singles chart.

Less than a year later, Morissette was back with her second album, Now is the Time. While the album was considered a financial disappointment, it spawned multiple hit singles that continued building her rock star profile in Canada. Two years later, Morissette moved to Los Angeles and began working on Jagged Little Pill.

Jagged Little Pill was Morissette’s first album to be released internationally, and it was a spectacular success. The lead single, “You Oughta Know”, was picked up by radio stations in Los Angeles thanks to collaboration from Dave Navarro and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and quickly became an immediate classic around the country.

The album was promptly picked up by MTV, which boosted its popularity around the world. Further singles such as “Ironic”, “All I Really Want”, and “Hand in My Pocket” drove the album to even more success, topping charts in Canada and becoming cultural touchstones of the mid-’90s. It remains one of the best-selling albums of all time.

“Ironic” quickly became Morissette’s biggest hit, and it remains an iconic rock song that’s paved the way for countless other female rockers to forge their own paths in its wake. Her career quickly exploded, landing high-profile collaborations with Ringo Starr, Dave Matthews Band, and Radiohead.

Morissette was soon back with Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, which received strong reviews from critics despite the huge expectations that had been placed upon it. The album shot to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, proving that the success of Jagged Little Pill had not been a fluke and that Morissette was here to stay.

The rock star completed an incredible three-album run at the top of the Billboard 200 with Under Rug Swept, which sold over 1 million copies in the United States alone. Morissette’s sound continued to develop in fascinating ways, with her dense lyricism and driving instrumentals forging the alt-rock sound that would become so entrenched in the 1990s.

With the arrival of a new month, Netflix has added a whole array of popular movies to its United States catalog. The streaming giant regularly rotates films in and out of its inventory to keep its availability fresh, and the first of the month is always the biggest day for this.

This June, Netflix has added more than fifty popular movies and around fifteen existing series to its U.S. catalog for audiences to enjoy. This is in addition to the original programming, which will be spread out throughout the month.

Netflix Adds Four Action Movie Collections

The movies that Netflix adds every month are generally decided by existing licensing agreements, as movies typically drift between streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu to keep their audiences fresh. Since movie sequels are often owned by the same company, this means entire franchises can arrive on Netflix at once.

This month, Netflix is adding four major action movie franchises right away. The Rocky collection features Sylvester Stallone‘s beloved 1979 sports drama and four of its immediate sequels. The only installment that isn’t arriving on June 1 is Rocky II, as it was already available on the platform.

To complement the Rocky collection, Netflix is also adding all three Creed movies to its U.S. catalog. Starring Michael B. Jordan in the lead role, these legacy sequels take place many years after the Rocky movies and follow Stallone’s character as he mentors a new generation of boxing talent.

Netflix is also introducing the Karate Kid collection to its ad-free tier for the first time. This collection features the original 1980s trilogy and the 2010 Hollywood remake, but not the critically panned The Last Karate Kid from 1994.

Finally, Netflix is bringing the Riddick collection to its United States inventory. Starring Vin Diesel in the lead role, this trilogy follows a dangerous convict who leads a team of survivors after their spacecraft lands on a mysterious planet. All three movies were added to the platform on June 1, 2026.

More Movie Collections Coming To Netflix in June

Besides these four action collections, Netflix is also bringing franchises such as Father of the Bride and Scooby Doo to its catalog. These beloved comedies have previously been available on Netflix in the U.S. but were rotated to different platforms as part of the streamer’s licensing agreements.

For romance fans, Netflix is adding movies such as The Fault in Our Stars, The Wedding Planner, and Runaway Bride this month. There will also be no shortage of thrillers for the adrenaline junkie audience, including The Girl on the Train, Inside Man, and If I Can’t Have You.

When it comes to rock and metal bands, the lead singers and guitarists usually get all of the love, while the drummers and bass players are in the back, largely ignored by excited crowds. Even outside of rock and metal music, the role of the rhythm section is often overlooked, which is a shame, because it’s one of the most important pieces of any dynamic group.

But musicians such as Keith Moon, John Bonham, Neil Peart and Stewart Copeland remain among the most popular rock drummers of all time, so there are ways these important players are getting attention.

Now, a 1984 rock hit is being recognized for having one of the greatest drum solos of all time. It’s a fun song that still plays well today.

A Van Halen Classic Has a Drum Solo That Keeps Rocking Hard

That song is Van Halen with “Hot for Teacher.” The song has what’s being called one of the greatest drum solos of all time by Stefan Joubert of the London Drum Institute.

“Right from the start, Alex Van Halen kicks ‘Hot for Teacher’ into high gear with an explosive double-bass drum solo,” he states in the feature. “It’s fast, it’s intense and it sets the tone for one of Van Halen’s most energetic songs.”

Joubert adds that this drum solo is “pure rock ‘n’ roll excitement – it makes you want to grab some sticks and try (key word: try) to keep up.” That’s definitely the case, because this solo rocks fast and hard, just the right way.

If you’re looking for a fun song to crank as loud as possible this summer that never gets old, “Hot for Teacher” fits the bill. The cherry on top is that it does showcase Alex Van Halen’s legendary drumming, and that kicks it into high gear and gives it an energetic sound that it just wouldn’t have without his drumming. Van Halen’s music served as the blueprint for hair metal, and “Hot for Teacher” was a large part of it.

The greatest rock songs of all time are led by iconic guitar riffs and solos, but bolstered by the best percussionists of their time.

Among the more underrated drummers of all time was Bill Ward, the drummer of Black Sabbath. While underrated, Ward did receive acclaim for his work on Rat Salad, a song from the band’s second album Paranoid.

Far Out Magazine ranked Ward’s work as one of the greatest drum solos of all time.

“His drum solo is visceral and as hard-hitting as any on the list. Funky yet metal, he makes a bold claim as rock’s most underrated drummer,” Far Out Magazine wrote. “The fills that make up the solo are so quick that there’s a definitive jazz influence that shines through, this provides a different account of Bill Ward’s drumming.”

‘Rat Salad’ Was Born out of Black Sabbath’s Early Career

Geezer Butler says that the instrumental “Rat Salad” resulted from Black Sabbath having to play epic stands in rock clubs early in their career. To fill time, the band would improvise and jam.

“Bill used to fill out a whole 45 minutes doing a drum solo just to get rid of that 45 minutes,” Butler recalled. “I have no idea where the title came from, though.”

While Rat Salad isn’t the most well known song from Black Sabbath, Eddie Van Halen revealed it was nearly the title of their band – before later opening for Black Sabbath.

“Yeah, that’s right. We played just about every Black Sabbath song. I used to sing lead on every Black Sabbath song we did—things like Into the Void, Paranoid, and Lord of This World,” Van Halen revealed.

Ward, meanwhile, recently celebrated his 78th birthday.
