FIFA explained Tuesday the tighter regulations that resulted in Germany having a potentially game-winning goal disallowed in its shock elimination from the World Cup. Defender Jonathan Tah’s headed goal in extra time against Paraguay on Monday was ruled out after a video review because of a foul on goalkeeper Orlando Gill. Replays showed Germany’s Waldemar Anton push Gill to the ground, but the minimal contact led to criticism of the decision. Germany went on to lose the round of 32 game in a penalty shootout, with Tah firing a decisive spot kick over the bar. FIFA’s referees chief Pierluigi Collina said officials had been told to punish incidents when players try to block opponents and make no attempt to play the ball, especially where goalkeepers are concerned. “Although keeping a position is not a foul per se, when an attacking player is not interested in the ball and deliberately moves, even marginally, with the clear intention of obstructing opponents’ movement and prevents him from defending, then referees, and VAR when needed, should carefully analyze the incident and intervene,” Collina said. “This is especially the case when the tactic aims to prevent the opposing goalkeeper from being able to defend the goal. “Coaches and players were informed so it should come as no surprise that referees will punish these fouls.” Collina said moves to curb timewasting had been successful. There are now time limits on goal kicks, throw ins and substitutions, while players are forced to leave the field for one minute after an injury. “These measures have all been very effective and unanimously considered as very positive innovations,” Collina said. The Detroit Lions seemed to be prepared to potentially play without Terrion Arnold, putting the cornerback on the field with backups during minicamp in mid-June. And suddenly, Arnold is a former player for the franchise. Detroit released Arnold on Monday, the same day a Florida judge set his bail at $1 million as he faces eight felony charges tied to allegations he orchestrated the abduction and beating of three men. The move leaves the Lions with eight players they list as cornerbacks on the roster, including three players with a combined 164 games of starting experience in the NFL. D.J. Reed, Rock Ya-Sin and Roger McCreary will likely compete to start when the season kicks off in September. The team is hopeful Ennis Rakestraw, who was drafted in the second round two years ago, can contribute after missing last season following shoulder surgery and being limited to eight games as a rookie due to hamstring and ankle injuries. “We still got Reed,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said in March, months before the team cut ties with Arnold. “We like (Rakestraw) coming back. I know it’s unproven right now, but, he’s had a good offseason to this point. We got Rock (Ya-Sin) and McCreary. “We’ve got some things there.” Some notable cornerbacks are still available in free agency, but four-time Pro Bowler Marshon Lattimore and 2021 All-Pro Trevon Diggs are coming off at least three injury-shortened seasons. Detroit drafted Arnold with the No. 24 pick overall in 2024, when the NFL draft was in the Motor City and the former Alabama star sported a big smile and an electric salmon silk suit. He had two years left on his four-year rookie contract. Arnold had an uneven rookie season, defending 10 passes in 15 starts without an interception. He picked off one pass last season while he was limited to eight games due to a concussion and shoulder injury. A month after the season ended for the Lions, prosecutors in Florida say, Arnold arranged for three men to be pistol-whipped after he wrongly suspected them of stealing $100,000 in cash and luxury goods from him. In March, Campbell said the Lions believed Arnold was not involved in the alleged crime based on the information they had at that time. “I feel like we’re going to be good here,” Campbell told reporters. “I’m going to trust what the kid said.” Two months later, Arnold’s stock with the team seemed to slip as he was not on the field with the No. 1 defense during offseason workouts while working his way back from the shoulder injury. “We got a lot of good guys in that room and he knows this,” Campbell said on June 17. “He’s got to earn it.” Before the Lions released Arnold, the judge did not require him to wear an ankle monitor because it would have prevented him from taking the field for games and training. Harvey Steinberg, an attorney for Arnold, argued in court Monday that prosecutors are “not even close” to showing that Arnold knew or directed what his associates would do. For decades, supersonic flights over the continental United States have been banned by regulators due to the sonic booms produced by the aircraft. However, it sounds like that could soon be changing.
On Tuesday, the Department of Transportation on Tuesday announced that regulators are moving toward allowing supersonic civilian flight over the country once again after advancements in technology have made it possible to limit the impacts of those sonic booms.
Supersonic Flights Banned Over Land
While commercial airliners typically fly between 550 and 600 miles per hour, supersonic flights travel at speeds at or above Mach 1, which is about 770 miles per hour or more. Obviously, flying at these speeds can drastically reduce travel times, but there has long been one major issue: sonic booms.
A sonic boom happens when an object moves through air faster than the speed of sound. As the object flies, it compresses air molecules into pressure waves. However, since the object is traveling faster than those waves can travel, the waves pile up into a single shockwave cone trailing behind it. When that shockwave passes over you, you hear it as one loud and sharp crack rather than a buildup like normal sound.
Obviously, these sonic booms would be quite disruptive to those on the ground, so the United States banned overland supersonic flight for civil aircraft back in 1973.
New Technology Makes it Possible
After more than 50 years, new technology has made it possible to mitigate the concerns with sonic booms.
A new flight technique called Mach cutoff uses the aircraft design, atmospheric conditions, speed, and altitude all in conjunction to make the sonic boom bend and refract up into the atmosphere, the FAA explained. Given that these techniques significantly reduce the ground-level impact, the FAA has determined that the restrictions are “an unnecessary restraint on the growth of the U.S. aviation sector.”
“Advances in aerospace engineering, materials science, noise reduction, and new operational concepts will eliminate the old sonic boom,” FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said in a statement on Tuesday. “This means we can ultimately repeal the ban from the 1970s on supersonic flight over U.S. territory while minimizing noise impacts to residents in communities along the route and near airports.”
As a result of this new technology, the FAA has proposed a rule that would open up continental supersonic flight for civilians once again, using a noise-based certification standard for supersonic aircraft rather than a blanket ban for any civilian aircraft traveling at Mach 1 or above. The agency also plans to propose another rule later this year covering landing and takeoff noise standards for supersonic aircraft.
These rules, which are expected to be finalized by 2027, would give aircraft manufacturers the guidance they need to finalize designs for aircraft that could be used commercially in the future.
While these rules would only cover domestic flights, the FAA is also working in conjunction with regulatory counterparts from around the world to develop rules that would allow supersonic aircraft to serve international flights over land, as well.
Over Two Decades Since The Concorde
While continental supersonic flight has been banned for over 50 years, it has been permitted over the sea, where the sonic booms would not be disruptive to people below. Still, commercial supersonic flight has been rare. In fact, it’s been over two decades since the most recent one.
The Concorde, flown by British Airways and Air France, was the first and only supersonic aircraft to enter regular commercial service. It began flying passengers in 1976, cruising at roughly Mach 2 — more than twice the speed of sound. The aircraft could cross the Atlantic in under three and a half hours, cutting a typical seven-hour flight nearly in half.
Despite the incredible speed, the Concorde never became a mainstream option due to notoriously expensive tickets, a small fleet, and high operating costs. Its decline was accelerated by a fatal crash in 2000 and a general lull in air travel after 9/11. British Airways and Air France retired their Concorde fleets in 2003, and there has not been a supersonic commercial flight since.
However, with these new FAA rules opening things up a bit, perhaps we will see some innovation in the commercial aviation industry that will bring the return of commercial supersonic flight.

England has plenty of firepower offensively with one of the game’s best center forwards in Harry Kane, a deep selection of wing options that includes Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham in the middle. The biggest concern for England’s starting lineup is at right back, as both Reece James and Jarell Quansah are sidelined due to injuries. That leaves Djed Spence likely to slide over the right side in the starting XI. The question for head coach Thomas Tuchel is whether he can get his team playing with intensity from the opening whistle. That was not the case in the last two games, when England was also heavily favored. DR Congo is enjoying a lot of support from neutral fans in the United States as the country participates in its first World Cup since 1974. The Leopards secured a surprising knockout berth as one of the best third-placed teams after holding Portugal to a draw and staging a thrilling 3-1 comeback victory over Uzbekistan. The team’s only defeat came in a 1-0 loss to Colombia. Sébastien Desabre’s squad will be highly motivated for this game, as the team boasts significant Premier League experience. This includes Newcastle United attacker Yoane Wissa, who has been the team’s star thus far at the World Cup with three goals in the group stage. DR Congo is expected to bring a highly physical but disciplined approach to this game. The team will sit deep in a compact formation, most likely the 5-3-2 it used against Portugal, and look to break out quickly on counterattacks. England is the heavy favorite, but games like this can be tricky as England is under enormous pressure to advance, while the DR Congo likely sees this game as a massive opportunity with nothing to lose. Both Belgium and Senegal enter this game with similar group stage patterns. Both teams were underwhelming in the two opening games but then secured a spot in the knockouts with a blowout win in the finale against the weakest team in the group. For Senegal, it was never going to be an easy path after getting drawn into a group with France and Norway. As expected, Senegal lost to France, 3-1, and then to Norway, 3-2, when, like most teams, it was unable to stop two of the best players in the world in Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland. But with eight third-place teams advancing to the knockouts, the door for Senegal was still open if it could beat Iraq, which it did, 5-0. For Belgium, the group stage was more disappointing because the Red Devils were never an underdog. Following a lackluster beginning of the tournament in a 1-1 draw with Egypt followed by a 0-0 draw with Iran, Rudi Garcia’s team finally was able to play up to its potential in a 5-1 blowout win over New Zealand, the lowest-ranked team at the World Cup in the FIFA World Rankings. The Red Devils lineup should have few surprises. Kevin De Bruyne remains the creative heartbeat in midfield, and he is flanked by top wingers in Manchester City’s Jérémy Doku and Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard. The biggest question for Garcia is at center forward, as Charles De Ketelaere started two of the group stage games and Romelu Lukaku has started once. Neither player was particularly convincing. For Senegal, head coach Pape Thiaw relies heavily on his team’s athleticism in the attack. That effort off the bench will likely see Gueye return to the team’s starting lineup, but only now should he be extremely confident of his form. After earning six points from its group stage with wins over Paraguay and Australia along with a loss to Türkiye, many will view the U.S. team as favorites in this game. But historical factors tell a different story for Mauricio Pochettino’s team. Starting with the 1990 World Cup, the U.S. national team’s record against European teams in this tournament is abysmal. With the loss to Türkiye last week, the USA has now faced European teams 21 times in the World Cup. During that span, the team has won just once, in the 3-2 win over Portugal in its 2002 opener. Meanwhile, the team has drawn seven times while having lost 13 times. On the issue of knockouts, since 1990, the U.S. team has won just one World Cup knockout while having lost five. The good news for Pochettino’s team is that its entire starting lineup from the 4-1 win over Paraguay is now healthy and ready for selection. That includes Christian Pulisic, who missed the win over Australia due to a calf injury, as well as Tyler Adams, Folarin Balogun, Antonee Robinson and Chris Richards, who did not play against Türkiye to avoid the risk of a yellow card suspension for this game. Offensively, the keys for the U.S. team involve winger Christian Pulisic and his ability to dribble at opponents to open space for his teammates. Meanwhile, Folarin Balogun was very dangerous in the first two games. If teammates can get him the ball, he is a lethal finisher. The midfield trio of Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie and Malik Tillman will look to control possession and dictate the tempo. Bosnia and Herzegovina will not be an easy test for the U.S. team, by any stretch. Sergej Barbarez’s team boasts a nicely blended roster that includes experience and youthful energy. Both were on display in the team’s 3-1 win over Qatar to clinch the team’s spot in the knockouts. Salzburg left midfielder Kerim Alajbegovic, 18, was the best player on the field in that game and his highlight came in scoring the opening goal. Ermin Mahmic, 21, was also important off the bench when he scored the final goal. Then there is PSV Eindhoven winger Esmir Bajraktarević, 21, who will be getting a lot of attention in this game given that he was born and raised in Wisconsin. He began his professional career with the New England Revolution and played for years with the U.S. youth national teams before switching to Bosnia and Herzegovina (where his parents were born) in 2024. On the other side of the age equation, the team’s all-time leading scorer in Edin Dzeko remains key to Bosnia’s offense. In the win over Qatar, Dezko was very active as his header forced Qatar’s own goal in the 34th minute. Then just before halftime, he nearly scored when his shot smashed off the post. This should be an emotional game with both teams looking to win what would be a historically important victory for their national team programs. The U.S. team wants to notch a win that would inspire a new generation of fans to fall in love with the sport and the team. Bosnia and Herzegovina is looking to win its first ever World Cup knockout game with a roster that consists of many exciting young players. Player To Watch The Juventus midfielder is extremely important to the U.S. team. When he plays well, the team plays well. When he doesn’t, the team struggles. He is a unique and special player when he is in good form. He can play a variety of positions, often shifting during a single game. He can dribble, and can pass, and he can use his size to his advantage. In the early parts of this tournament, McKennie was at his best and there should be no reason to expect anything else in this game.

In one of the more confusing booking decisions in recent memory, WWE decided to hold off on Oba Femi’s world championship match for SummerSlam 2026.
Femi won the King of the Ring tournament after defeating Jey Uso in the finals. The winner was supposed to receive a championship match at SummerSlam, but Femi instead accepted a Hell in a Cell match challenge from Brock Lesnar on Raw.
Before Femi vs. Lesnar was made official, many fans had hoped that Femi would face World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns at SummerSlam. This year’s pay-per-view will take place on the Aug. 1-2 weekend at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Ringside News), Dave Meltzer explained that WWE wants to take its time in building up Femi as the next big thing. Meltzer indicated that WWE is saving Femi vs. Reigns for WrestleMania 43 next year.
“They could put Oba over Roman. They could’ve sat here and gone, ‘We’ve got to make a new star. Let’s put Oba over Roman Reigns at SummerSlam.’ They could’ve done it,” Meltzer said. “But their mentality is just that if he’s the guy, we want to make the guy…This is a weird thing. Before, if you wanted to make the guy, you figured out the right time to make the guy and did it.
“Now, you have to do it at WrestleMania because if it’s SummerSlam, it’s not strong enough. If it’s on a B pay-per-view…That is the mentality. You get him over. The idea is he’s an unbeatable monster, and we take our time to get to WrestleMania.”
Femi soundly defeated Lesnar at WrestleMania, but the latter evened their head-to-head series with a victory at Clash in Italy.

During this week’s episode of Raw, it was announced that Seth Rollins would challenge Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam 2026.
It remains to be seen what the WWE Championship match will be. Fans assumed a title showdown between Cody Rhodes and CM Punk, but Sami Zayn won the title in a triple threat match vs. Gunther and the American Nightmare at Night of Champions.
The Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani will skip his scheduled pitching start Wednesday against the Athletics to get some extra rest, manager Dave Roberts said. The Dodgers are in the midst of playing 13 games in 13 days, and Roberts wanted to make sure that the Japanese sensation got a break. Ohtani is slated to pitch in San Diego on Friday. “If there’s any opportunity to give him some extra rest, we’re going to try to take advantage of it,” Roberts said. “So pushing him to Friday allows us to have him still take two starts before the break and get on two division opponents. In that vein, there’s just no downside. This made too much sense.” Ohtani is 8-2 with a 1.58 ERA in 13 starts this season. The four-time MVP has 82 strikeouts and 24 walks in 79 2/3 innings this season.
