No NFL Games and the Aussie Open Is Done, but There’s Still a Big Sports Event Tonight

With the NFL taking the weekend off to gear up for Super Bowl LX on February 8 between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots, and the 2026 Australian Open crowning Grand Slam champions Elena Rybakina and Carlos Alcaraz earlier today, it may seem as if there aren’t many major sporting events to watch for the rest of February 1. Well, fear not. If you didn’t have plans to tune into the 2026 Grammy Awards and have the desire to watch some stiff athletic competition, the NBA has a highly anticipated matchup between LeBron James’ Los Angeles Lakers and Jalen Brunson’s New York Knicks.

Now Sunday’s Lakers game obviously isn’t a playoff matchup or a part of February’s Annual NBA All-Star Weekend. However, after the Lakers’ big loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday, January 28, James fans are all wondering if the 41-year-old’s retirement is closer than they thought. When speaking with the press post-game, James shared:

“I’m just trying to take everything in, not take the moments for granted. Because it could be (my last season). I obviously haven’t made a decision on the future, but it very well could be.”

This brief statement has sent avid NBA watchers and analysts into a frenzy, thinking the next few months in 2026 may be the superstar’s last in the league. So moving forward, every game James plays in becomes a must-watch event unless he makes it clear he has at least one more season in him. Case in point, the February 1 matchup between the Lakers and the Knicks.

Lakers vs Knicks Tickets Are Expensive

The mystery surrounding King James’ retirement plan has created lots of demand, driving the price of the Lakers/Knicks game at Madison Square Garden on February 1 through the roof. Allegedly, tickets are so high, according to NBC Sports, that they’ve now become “the most expensive NBA regular-season game ticket since Kobe Bryant’s final game in Los Angeles, according to both Gametime and TickPick.”

As of publication, nosebleed seats on Seat Geek are at the very least going for $471, while some of the best seats left are going anywhere between $2,000 and $4,700. So it’s definitely going to cost if you want to see James live in MSG tonight.

For those ready to tune in and watch James and his Lakers go up against Brunson, James’ former coach (Mike Brown), and the rest of the Blue and Orange squad, the game airs on NBC and streams on Peacock at 7 pm ET/4 pm PT. You’ll either need access to the NBC network TV channel or a subscription to Peacock to watch. With both teams having almost identical records (the Lakers are 29-18 and the Knicks are 30-18) and their starting lineups likely intact, tonight’s competition should be a good one.

Cardinals Hire Rams OC Mike LaFleur to be Next Head Coach

The Arizona Cardinals have found their next head coach, not long after losing out on the sweepstakes to land Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur has been hired as the next head coach of the Cardinals, the team announced Sunday. With Sunday’s news of the Cardinals hiring LaFleur and the Las Vegas Raiders planning to hire Kubiak, all 10 head coach vacancies have been filled. LaFleur, 38, has been the Rams’ offensive coordinator for the last three seasons, helping Los Angeles undergo a resurgence following its disappointing 2022 season. Under LaFleur’s watch, the Rams’ offense has been among the best in football over the last few years, with quarterback Matthew Stafford playing at an MVP level and wide receiver Puka Nacua becoming an Offensive Player of the Year candidate in 2025. The Rams’ offense led the league in yards and points this season, too. While LaFleur was the offensive coordinator for a prolific offense, he wasn’t viewed as highly of a coaching candidate as other coordinators because head coach Sean McVay calls plays for the Rams. FOX Sports’ Henry McKenna didn’t include LaFleur in his nine best head coach candidate ranking as a result. The Cardinals, meanwhile, weren’t viewed as a top destination among the 10 head coach vacancies this offseason, either. FOX Sports’ Ben Arthur ranked the Arizona job as the second-worst vacancy this offseason, with the Miami Dolphins being the only team ranked behind the Cardinals. The Cardinals went 3-14 in 2025, which was tied for the worst record in the league, and have questions at quarterback following Kyler Murray’s regression this past season. This is a developing story and will be updated.

49ers Find Robert Saleh Replacement, Reportedly Tabbing Raheem Morris to be DC

The San Francisco 49ers are replacing one accomplished defensive coordinator with another coach who has had plenty of success as a defensive coordinator. Former Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris is expected to be hired as the 49ers’ next defensive coordinator, ESPN reported Sunday. Morris will replace Robert Saleh, who became the Tennessee Titans’ head coach in January after one season back with the 49ers as their defensive coordinator. Morris was fired by the Falcons after two seasons as head coach at the end of the 2025 regular season. But prior to becoming the Falcons’ head coach, Morris helped steer the Los Angeles Rams’ defense to success as their defensive coordinator. The Rams won the Super Bowl in Morris’ first year at the helm in 2021, helping him become a strong head coach candidate. The Falcons’ defense was also respectable under Morris this past season. They ranked 15th in total defense and 12th in defensive DVOA, with Atlanta’s defense notably having a standout performance when it intercepted Matthew Stafford three times in its Week 17 upset win over Los Angeles. Now, Morris will take over a 49ers defense that arguably overperformed in 2025, considering the injuries they had. Even though edge rusher Nick Bosa and linebacker Fred Warner missed the majority of the year, the 49ers ranked 13th in scoring defense and 20th in yards allowed. Morris had also received head coaching interest following the Falcons’ decision to fire him, interviewing with a handful of teams for the head coach vacancies in January.
