These Basic Nail Colors Look Good on Everyone

There’s no denying that nail art is fun. Cute manis with sprinklings of glitter and hand-drawn flowers are as pretty as a picture, and negative-space nails earn instant cool-girl points, but there’s something effortlessly stylish about basic nail colours. Reds, nudes and navy blues might seem like obvious choices when you’re faced with a rainbow of options at the nail salon, but let’s face it: They’re classic shades for a reason. (And that’s because they look good on everyone and are always on trend.) We caught up with some nail experts to find out what specific shades of nail polish remain popular year after year, and why certain colours manage to stand the test of time.

Coral-red nails pair perfectly with a red lip.
Julia Roberts keeps it classic with a true pillar box–red mani.
A deep tomato shade is a classic way to wear red.
Beyoncé’s pink-toned nude nails let the rest of her outfit do the talking.
VB keeps things classic with a barely there nude mani.
Sheeny nude nails look chic on Alexa Chung.
Kerry Washington steps out in a sparkling all-black ensemble and matching mani.
ASOS Kicki’s feathered Bardot top and black mani is monochromatic goals.
Meghan Markle keeps things classic with a basic black mani and LBD.
Jorja Smith goes for bubblegum-pink nails.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley keeps things classic in petal pink.

And Now, The Skinny Jean Trend Your Ankle Boots Have Been Waiting For

If you thought skinny jeans were way too classic to be deemed “trendy”, well, you thought wrong. Sure, the staple denim has been around for decades at this point (and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon), but that doesn’t mean designers are done dreaming up new ways to make them feel fresh. Case in point: the skinny jean trend I’ve just spotted on a few of my favorite fashion influencers—oh, and Hailey Bieber, too.

Skinny jeans with split hems at the side of the ankle have been quietly popping up from cool-girl brands like Cotton Citizen, whose High Split Jeans are on their way to earning cult status, Reformation, and Ganni. It’s a subtle detail, but the side splits are what really make these skinny jeans stand out. For one, they add a bit of flare around the ankle, making them the ideal denim fit to style with ankle boots. As we’ve pointed out before, it’s easy to make the skinny jeans mistake of letting them bunch around the ankles or awkwardly stuffing them inside of boots, so the flared hem on this trend is truly genius. But it’s not just ankle boots their play well with. Strappy heels, kitten heels, and mules all look excellent with the denim. Or you could follow Bieber’s lead and styled them with flat sneakers.

Continue on to see how the split hem skinny jean trend is styled on Instagram and shop the pairs we love.

Emma Roberts Discovered the $45 Flats That Look Great With Leggings

Even though Emma Roberts is quite petite at 5’2″, that doesn’t stop her from regularly wearing flats, which is something that we support. She also has a knack for finding the best affordable flats, which is something else that we support. This week, Roberts stepped out in L.A. wearing leggings and a white Madewell tee, plus a pair of flats that it probably hasn’t occurred to you to wear with leggings: moccasins.

If you think about it, moccasins are the perfect shoes to wear with leggings when you need a break from sneakers. They’re as easy to slip on and off as a pair of pool slides, but they’re a far more interesting choice. Roberts’s particular pair of moccasins are classic Minnetonkas, and you can get them at Nordstrom for just $45. Race you to the checkout?
