NEW YORK—Expressing confusion over players’ work ethic, NCAA president Mark Emmert wondered Friday why financially struggling student athletes didn’t just exploit the labor of others. “We understand students may often feel financial pressure, but they did not need to ask us for money when they could simply go out and…
Researchers have gained insights into a promising material for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The substance enables high light yields and would be inexpensive to produce on a large scale — that means it is practically made for use in large-area room lighting. Researchers have been searching for such materials for a long time. The newly generated understanding will facilitate the rapid and cost-efficient development of new lighting appliances in the future.
Welcome to #WhoWhatWearing, a series in which we highlight you, our stylish community of readers. Each of the following looks came straight from a photo you tagged us in on Instagram. Want to be featured next time? You guessed it: Use #WhoWhatWearing on the outfit posts you want us to see.
When I think about what makes the Who What Wear community such a fun group, it strikes me that we all have one thing in common, no matter what differences we might have in taste, geographical location, age, or budget: our love of trends. Or rather, our love of discussing them. I’ve witnessed firsthand how there’s nothing that gets the comments firing in our Facebook group or on one of our Instagram posts than a hotly debated new fashion trend. Y’all have opinions for days, and I’m here for it.
I know for me, there are “weird” trends I love but also more mainstream ones that I’m not necessarily a fan of, too. Everyone has a different take on the lineup of trends in the market at any given moment (it’s what makes each of our styles unique, after all), so I thought it would be interesting to tap some of our community members and stylish WWW readers to get their take on which 2020 fashion trends they’re all about trying—and, consequently, which ones they’re politely passing on.
The group I reached out to named nine trends they’re super down to wear and pointed to four they’ll be glossing over, so keep scrolling to discover them all and shop my picks within each favorable style.
“You will definitely find me adhering to the matching sweatpants and sweatshirt trend. For strolls around the city, I’ll keep the sweatpants on and throw on a pair of New Balance sneakers and an oversize blazer to dress it up a bit.” — Amy Julliette Lefevre
“I can’t get enough of color and I will be taking advantage of this newfound love of saturation while wearing some colorful faux leather jackets, bags, and pants. I am excited to experiment with more chunky gold jewelry, sporty loungewear, and some longer cut shorts, think Princess Diana in the ’90s.” — Lauren Elson
Shop the matching High Break Blazer ($75)
“Until a few years ago, my closet consisted of only black, white, gray, and tan—boring!” — Elson
“When it comes to my personal style, I usually go for a more classic and timeless look and occasionally mix in a few trendy pieces. One of the trends that I’ll be trying this year is lingerie outside the bedroom. I love that this look makes me feel confident and sexy and is slightly unexpected.” — Kat Shearer
“I’ll more than likely be passing on short shorts. I’m just not sure I have the legs to pull them off.” — Shearer
“A trend I’m looking forward to this year is all the different types of leather pieces and the vibrant colors they are coming in. From jackets to skirts to trenches, I’ve been seeing such beautiful colors from pastels to earth tones to even neon colors in leather. Leather was huge in the ’90s, so I’m excited about the comeback it’s making.” — Danie Sierra
“I don’t think I’ll be partaking in polka dots, even though I’m seeing them everywhere and lots of brands are using the print again, but honestly, I was never much of a fan and don’t see myself becoming one now.” — Sierra
“I don’t usually follow trends but if I had to choose, it would be corset tops.” — La’Shaunae Steward
“I’ll definitely be leaning into the ’70s groovy trend. I’m already a huge fan of the prints and silhouettes from the decade, they will be really fun to play around with this year. There aren’t really any trends I’m opposed to as long as it’s a piece that makes me feel good.” — Noor Elkhaldi
“There are so many 2020 trends I”m dying to try before the year is over. My favorite so far is square-toe sandals. The squared-off toe adds an edge that makes any shoe that features it that much more intriguing.” — Shahirah Ahmed
“Asymmetrical tops are also a favorite right now mainly because the style is perfect for many body types, modern, and just super cool to look at.” —Ahmed
“I’ll be passing on crochet, fringe, and net everything. I’m still scarred from over-wearing those styles in the early 2000s.” — Ahmed
Well, I don’t know about you, but my summer plans sure have taken a turn. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, my four-year anniversary with my boyfriend, Summer Fridays… all are looking like they’re going to be very low-key and local affairs this year. But you know what they say: Dress for the vacation you want, not the lack of a vacation you have. (Or something?)
While this may be a summer without a destination wedding or even a weekend away, I’m determined that it won’t be one without a summer wardrobe. The honest truth is that I’ve worn leggings and sweatshirtsevery single day of this lockdown so far, but now that it’s finally warming up in NY, I’m happily transitioning away from athleisure and into easy, breezy (and just as comfortable) summer outfits designed to lift my mood. From the dress I already bought to wear to a September wedding in France to the swimwear I sometimes secretly like to wear under my clothes instead of undies (for that “I’m on vacation” vibe—you know what I mean), here’s a little happy motivation to get actually dressed this season.
Love this universally flattering color almost as much as I love the modern feel of that cut-out.
The only decision to make with this easy-to-wear skirt is which of the prints is cuter…
Honestly, if we’re not all wearing Roxanne Assoulin necklaces, is it even summer?
I’ll just be over here, pretending I’m sweltering in Paris.
One day, we’ll have events with nonspecific dress codes again, and I promise this will be your go-to dress.
I’ve never owned a pair of Birkenstocks, but I’ve come close to buying a pair of Arizona’s about 20 times. (Mostly because my friend Lucy has worn hers religiously for about 15 years—proof here, here, and here). As someone who strictly invests in gold hardware, I’m extremely glad I held out for this luxe-looking Big Buckle style.
I may not be going to Italy this summer, but try explaining that to a matching set in the most perfect muted gingham.
The top is destined to be paired with all your denim (and is available in sizes 00 to 16).
The cut and details of these ultra-comfy pants make them look elevated, but I promise you, these are pajamas in a chic disguise. (The wide waistband is all elastic at the back.)
Yes, I’ve shared this Matteau dress with you before. (It was once destined to be worn to a wedding in France this summer… sigh.) But this roomy, low-backed number in the perfect print deserves another mention now that Farfetch is having a sale. Trust me: It’ll keep.
Speaking of Matteau, this is the ultimate wear-on-repeat black lightweight-knit dress. It will eventually be a great day-to-nighter. (You know—when that means something other than just wearing your PJs all day.)
This textured puff-sleeve dress (in my current favorite color) is a top-rated style on Free People.
It’s summer: Layer your anklets accordingly. Exhibit A…
Exhibit B.
It’s the matching-knit-bralette-cardigan-combo trend, only sans cardigan.
This linen shirt is the answer to, “What do I wear over a knit bralette, anyway?”
FYI, pool slides do not require a pool.
Very chill.
The Supergoop! oil with SPF protects while giving me that vacation-skin glow (and the scent immediately takes me back to carefree days at the beach).
Vintage-inspired wrap dresses + white sneakers. Can’t go wrong.
Just the denim shorts I’ve been waiting for.
Oh look, it’s me, casually wandering the villages of Sardinia to buy fresh tomatoes on the vine… Or, more realistically, drinking Cannonau on my couch while watching The Spy Who Loved Me.
Okay, yes, I’m on a bit of a Free People spree here, but tell me this top isn’t about to become the breeziest piece in your wardrobe?
I wear this Alighieri gold medallion necklace every single day of summer.
I accidentally discovered this sweet little sundress when I was browsing Nordstrom and can happily report that it’s now 60% off. The alternative prints will cater to all your style personalities: ivory with a tiny floral detail, leopard print, plus a particularly good black and white gingham.
This trending bag style by editor-favorite JW Pei comes in so many happy hues (and summer-ready neutrals, for the less adventurous amongst us). It may only be going for a spin around the block for now, but you can feel extra good about this purchase knowing JW Pei is donating 20% of proceeds from their S/S 20 collection to The Mask Fund in support of COVID-19 healthcare workers.
Complete this outfit with a negroni.
Something particularly good is going on with Marni’s sandals this season…
… Seriously.
Seriously.
A level up from wearing denim cutoffs, but just as versatile.
This soft, light-weight knit looks way more expensive than it is.
Only wear accessories that put you in vacation mode.
I am here for shorts that come with matching belts.
Realistically, these are what I’m wearing 99% of the time.
This Mara Hoffman bikini top is your opportunity to be Carrie in the Hamptons at Samantha’s ex-assistant’s hoedown party––only without the part when she vomits after seeing Big with Natasha (and, more importantly, without the pink cowboy hat).
As if this dress isn’t good enough already, you can also buy it as separates…
Shop the top (with an extra-good drawstring detail)…
And mix and match the skirt, which is also particularly good with a knotted, relaxed-fit graphic tee.
Like this one!
Or this one.
If you’re feeling a little bit Baywatch.
Not to hurry you along, but the matching pants have already sold out.
These frames look good on everyone.
These little treasures are handmade in New York with Swarvoski pearl drops.
I just think everyone should know about this Bottega bikini.
It’ll hold groceries for now, but I’m aiming to carry towels and sunscreen in this shopper eventually.
Don’t sleep on this relaxed-fit tee in the perfect vintage tones.
I. Am. Here. For. Dresses. With. Pockets.
These sandals also come in black, but I vote for the soft minty green. (And feel free to consider this whole tucked-pant styling trend optional… I know I am.)
Just a ridiculously good tank, if you’re in the mood to invest.
Why do I have such a thing for shirts like this?
Ever so slightly more see-through than your usual bucket hat and infinitely chicer.
My sister wore Clinique Happy in high school, and I thought it was so cool. This classic scent just smells like summer (and has since 1997). I’ll be wearing it around the house for an instant mood shift, just letting it take me back to those more carefree times.
