11 new sci-fi and fantasy books to check out this November
There’s always been a bit of a crossover in audiences between gamers and science fiction fans. Journalists have spilled a lot of ink over the years writing about the rise in popularity of games like Settlers of Catan, Terraforming Mars, and Pandemic. I recently picked up It’s All a Game: The History of Board Games from Monopoly to Settlers of Catan by Tristan Donovan. It’s an interesting read that explores the origins of everything from chess and backgammon to modern favorites like Monopoly and Mousetrap.
What struck me while reading it is how the origins of so many games stem from someone being bored (as in the case of Clue) or being laid off from work (Scrabble), so they set about tinkering and end up with a game that later explodes…
Girlfriend Really Has Mind Of Its Own Today
Red Dead Redemption 2 players find cursed road that always sets horses on fire
Today in nightmare fuel: in Red Dead Redemption 2, there’s a specific patch of land that has invisible fire on it. The AI characters have no idea it’s there, and therefore, they have no reason to try to avoid this contaminated road. This means that players everywhere are leading their horses to a fiery, horrifying death, thanks to a bizarre glitch.
Since the game’s release last week, strange clips of horses spontaneously catching fire have been floating around on social media. At the time, fans chalked it up to typical open-world shenanigans: when a game is this large, there’s no telling what can go wrong. Recently, however, players deduced that the glitch tends to happen at the same place. Specifically, the invisible fire is located on…
The EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti is $150 off at B&H Photo
EVGA’s GeForce GTX 1070 Ti is $150 off at B&H Photo. Normally priced at $499 (though you can commonly find it for around $449), this graphics card is now available for $349. If you’ve been waiting on the sidelines for GPU prices to plummet, this is the best deal that we’ve seen for this particular card.
To offer some perspective on this price: EVGA sells this GPU refurbished through its own site, and it still costs $50 more than this brand new-card from B&H Photo. Better yet, it’s part of Nvidia’s new promotion that bundles Monster Hunter: World with the purchase.
In terms of its power, the GTX 1070 Ti is positioned to offer up high frame rates for those who game in 2K resolution and below. The GTX 1080 and, obviously, Nvidia’s new RTX…
Flickr will end 1TB of free storage and limit free users to 1,000 photos
Flickr was purchased in April by professional photo hosting service SmugMug, and today, the first major changes under the new ownership have been announced. There’s a serious downgrade for free users, who are now limited to 1,000 pictures on the photo sharing site, instead of the free 1TB of storage that was previously offered.
As Flickr explains in its press release announcing the change, “Unfortunately, ‘free’ services are seldom actually free for users. Users pay with their data or with their time. We would rather the arrangement be transparent.” It makes a certain amount of sense — servers aren’t free, after all — but for free users with more than 1,000 photos, it’s not ideal news.
