Ridley Scott Is Officially Developing a Sequel to ‘Gladiator’

It’s been almost 20 years since Gladiator, Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe‘s blockbuster tale of Maximus—a Roman general who is enslaved then becomes a gladiator—dominated the Academy Awards. Now it looks as though Scott is ready to return to the arena with Gladiator 2.

The director has no issue with making sequels—in the last few years he has directed Alien: Covenant and produced Blade Runner 2049. Audiences didn’t necessarily crush each other rushing into theaters for those, but they weren’t failures, either. Scott has plenty of reasons to make a bet on this one.

The trailer for the first film alone makes a pretty good case for revisiting that world.

Deadline has details:

While Crowe’s Maximus character met his end in the classic original film, Gladiator 2 will follow the continuing story of Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), The youth was the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the weaselly son of Roman leader Marcus Aurelius who murdered his father seized the throne and wound up in the gladiator ring with Maximus, who though mortally wounded, skewered the emperor before fading into the great beyond to reunite with his slain wife and son. Maximus saved the boy and his mother while avenging his own family, and left a strong impression on the young Lucius.

Every great movie could be mined for multiple sequel prompts, many of them tangential, but that sounds like a pretty solid storyline.

Deadline further reports that Paramount and Universal are involved.

The idea of a sequel to Gladiator isn’t new. Scott and Russell Crowe had Nick Cave write a script for Gladiator 2 a few years ago. As BMD reported in 2017, Cave’s script was insane. Here’s just part of BMD’s breakdown:

Cave’s script begins, as promised, with Maximus dead. His body lies in a dense forest, rain pouring down from above, and his well-armored corpse is soon set upon by a pair of wandering looters. A shadowy figure emerges from the gloom, killing one of the bandits and chasing off the other. The figure approaches Maximus, who suddenly sits up, wide awake and extremely confused. Where is he? What happened? And who’s this weird dude beckoning him to follow him back through the forest?

This is Mordecai, who responds to Maximus’ litany of questions with a simple, “I keep the peace.” The two adjourn to a small encampment, and Mordecai explains that he just came from seeing Maximus killed in the Coliseum, a bit of news that goes over about as well as you’d expect it to. That night, Maximus is haunted by a vision, the same one we saw him struck by throughout the first Gladiator: a rolling wheat field, a large tree, his wife and child waiting for him next to a humble dwelling. This time, the vision is interrupted by rolling thunder and terrifying bolts of lightning. Wherever his family’s at, bad things are afoot. Maximus wakes up, vowing to find them.

Well, okay then. From there, Maximus wanders a bizarre netherworld in search of his family and seriously, it gets much, much weirder.

Read Cave’s insane script here, if you dare. It’s so crazy it would be a classic if Scott did choose to produce the thing. But it sounds like he’s going the rational route with the new sequel.

As the (hopefully non-weird) Gladiator 2 is obviously still in the works, no release date has been set.

Daniel Cormier Chokes Out Derrick Lewis to Keep UFC Heavyweight Title, Calls Out Brock Lesnar

Daniel Cormier popped a sweat facing Derrick “My balls was hot” Lewis in UFC 230 at Madison Square Garden, but he didn’t have to work that hard. He beat Lewis with a choke hold in the second round, and when he shouldered his record-setting second title belt, he looked ready for another match.

His words left no doubt about that. He wants that match with a very big target: former UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar

As Joe Rogan held up the mic, Cormier said, “Brock Lesnar! When you come, bring that brand new WWE title too, I feel like being a WWE champion too. Let’s go! Let’s go, Brock! Bring that belt with you if you come to my house.”

Cormier had something else to say. “Two belts for each shoulder! I get to look at this again. It’s history and Daniel Cormier is one of the best of all-time.”

Cormier’s decisive win was against an opponent with superior reach, one who looked like he was in better shape and equally strong, but the end was in sight in the first round, when he first took Lewis to the mat.

Cormier remained in charge after that, and his win with a rear naked choke in round 2 just seemed like a foregone conclusion. With that he established himself as the first MMA champ to successfully defend titles in different weight classes—heavyweight and light heavyweight.

As for his challenge: He doesn’t just want to face Brock Lesnar in the Octagon—he wants to add a third belt to his collection with the big man’s title as WWE Universal Champion.

“Bring that belt with you when you come to my house,” Cormier said.

Both fighters are ready to go. Following Cormier’s win against Stipe Miocic, Lesnar confronted him with trash talk and a shoving match, clearly setting the stage for a future showdown.

They’ll have to wait a while—Lesnar still isn’t done serving a 2016 USADA suspension for banned substances.

Why Guillermo del Toro’s attention to detail makes his movie monsters stand out

Guillermo del Toro is behind some of cinema’s most inventive and visually-pleasing genre films in recent years — Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, Hellboy, and The Shape of Water all enjoy stunning costume and set design that complement their stories and which stand out from the rest of what you might see in theaters. A new video from YouTuber Kristian Williams, (aka kaptainkristian) explores why the filmmaker’s movie monsters are so memorable, especially in an age when CGI is so prevalent.

A key reason for why del Toro’s films are so memorable is the attention to detail and effort put into the design of his characters, and how they interact with their surroundings. In Pan’s Labyrinth, Williams notes that the faun complements his…

Apple’s new MacBook Air faces strong Windows and iPad competition

Steve Jobs changed the world of laptops 10 years ago when he introduced the MacBook Air by removing it from a tiny paper office envelope. It was a moment that shocked the audience at Apple’s Macworld 2008 keynote, and sent shockwaves through the entire PC market. Apple created a wedge shaped laptop that at its thickest part was still thinner than the thinnest part of the Sony TZ Series — one of the thinnest laptops back in 2008. No other PC maker had anything that could compete, and it took years for the PC market to find an answer.

Apple’s MacBook Air from 10 years ago signaled a new era for laptops, but the company’s latest refresh, unveiled earlier this week, shows how the competition has caught up. While the original MacBook Air…

Elon Musk shows off the Boring Company ‘disturbingly long’ LA tunnel in a short video

In October, Elon Musk said that the Boring Company’s proof-of-concept tunnel in LA will open to the public on December 10th. Last night, he said on Twitter that the opening is still on track, and posted a video of his walk down the entire length of the tunnel.

The sped-up video takes just over 30 seconds, and shows off the tunnel that Musk describes as “disturbingly long.”

Construction on the tunnel began over a year ago, and extends from SpaceX’s Hawthorne, California headquarters, to an LA suburb. Since then, the Boring Company has been selected to build tunnels for Chicago and Washington DC, and has sketched out plans to build a larger network of tunnels under…
