This Trick for a Flawless Jean Fit Is Bizarre, But It Works

Raise your hand if you love the way rigid, vintage-feeling denim looks? Now keep your hand raised if you also like how it feels upon first wear? Didn’t think so. It’s not always the most comfortable of things to slip into given there’s zero stretch, so I hear you on that one. I love essentially everything about authentic, heavy denim—aside from the feeling upon the initial wear. Of course, they loosen up and start to give in all the right places as you break them in, making them ultra-flattering and the main reason they’ve been my go-to for years. But let’s just call a spade a spade: At first, they’re quite tight.

Even though I practically live in jeans, I will confess that getting into my favorite pairs of rigid denim can often result in jumping, pulling, wriggling, light sweating, and a general feeling of frustration. Now, I’ve always been a huge proponent of the fashion squat (if you’re not familiar, yes I do mean a literal squat—I drop it low a few times to stretch my jeans out in all the necessary places), but I’m always open to new tips to make my favorite denim more comfortable. So when my co-worker was talking about the weird trick she uses for a flawless fit, I was all ears.

She proceeded to tell me that upon purchasing and before her first IRL wear, she sleeps in her rigid denim. Yes, sleeps. As crazy as that sounded to me, I simply had to test this theory for myself. Anything in the name of journalism, right? For this experiment, I turned to my two favorite brands for perfect, 100% cotton denim: Re/Done and Grlfrnd. Here’s what went down.

Trial #1: For my first time around, I chose this cool Grlfrnd pair that, as you can see from the photo above, were tight like a tiger. I slipped them on, snapped some photographic proof, and hit the hay.

Fast-forward to the morning, and they’re perfectly worn-in. They still fit like a glove, but I’m able to do things like sit down comfortably and, you know, breathe. I would call this a success.

Trial #2: For my second night sleeping in jeans, I chose this classic pair from Re/Done. As you can see, they also started out quite form-fitting. I repeated the same process from the previous night—snapped some photos and crawled into bed.

Once again I woke up in the morning, and violà! Perfectly relaxed. They still retain their flattering, authentic shape, but I am able to move around comfortably—no fashion squats required.

While I can attest that, yes, sleeping in your brand-new non-stretch denim does, in fact, loosen them up to the perfect degree, I can’t say that this will be something I’m doing on the regular. I much prefer dozing off in my pajamas, but I’m happy to have this trick in my back pocket for when the situation may call for it.

So my conclusion is that if you’re really committed to the cause, knock yourself out and sleep in your rigid jeans. You’ll wake up with a flawless fit—and maybe a few friends who think you’ve lost your mind. Hey, fashion knows not of comfort, right?

This is the exact pair from trial #1, and let me tell you I’ve never gotten so many compliments on a pair of jeans.

And this is the pair from trial #2. I would wear these literally every single day if nobody would notice (and honestly, it might still be worth it even if they did).

Hello, legs for days!

Well, what we often have to remind ourselves is that there’s actually team of people working hard to make these stylish moments happen—and at the helm of those teams are stylists.

And from accessories to dresses to denim, their answers did not disappoint; read on to see and shop their picks.

Every Single Outfit Fueling Our Cardi B Obsession

It’s safe to say that 2018 has been a big year for rapper/songwriter Cardi B. From breaking multiple records with her debut album to sitting front row at New York Fashion Week (next to Anna Wintour no less), it’s clear that Cardi B is set to leave her mark on both the music and fashion worlds one statement-making outfit at a time.

Known for her penchant for Ugg boots as well as luxury It items (see: “I like those Balenciagas, the ones that look like socks.”), Cardi B’s style never disappoints. With the help of her stylist, Kollin Carter, she’s already worked with some of the industry’s top designers, including Christian Siriano, Moschino, and Alexander Wang. Her ability to mix high-end labels with more affordable pieces has made Cardi one to watch on the red carpet.

With her highly anticipated collaboration with the online retailer Fashion Nova set to be released in November, Cardi B can officially be dubbed as this year’s most promising style star. Read on to take a look at some of our favorite Cardi B ensembles that we won’t be forgetting anytime soon, and some of the tips to channel the star’s style yourself.

On Cardi B: Nicolas Jebran dress; Lorraine Schwartz jewelry; Alexander Acosta shoes. Style Notes: At the MTV VMAs, Cardi stole the show in a magenta velvet off-the-shoulder wrap dress that featured one notable leg slit.
On Cardi B: Tom Ford Ruched Bodice Gown With Beaded Sleeves ($8990) and heels. Style Notes: For her performance at the Latin Billboard Music Awards, her look was all about the sleeves: a ruched blush dress with glittering metallic sequin sleeves.
On Cardi B: Tom Ford S/S 18 dress; Dylanlex custom earrings; Giuseppe Zanotti Harmony Sandals ($845). Style Notes: She proved just how classic and timeless a slinky black dress and thin-strap sandals can be attended the Tom Ford show at New York Fashion Week.
On Cardi B: Alejandro Collection custom pants, bustier, and jacket; Louis Vuitton Laureate Desert Boot ($1310). Style Notes: An all-white outfit is a fashion-girl uniform that is perennially chic. Paired with white accessories, Cardi B successfully channeled the legendary R&B girl group TLC during her Coachella set.
On Cardi B: Off White x Virgil Abloh Satin Belted Robe Coat ($1805) and Crepe Wide-Leg Carpenter Pants ($995); Blindness top; Christian Louboutin Botticella Alta Heel ($995). Style Notes: Make the pajama trend more daytime-appropriate by wearing it with a romantic blouse and sky-high pumps.
On Cardi B: Custom Christian Siriano dress. Style Notes: The long sleeves and trumpet silhouette give this major (bump-revealing) ensemble an Old Hollywood feel.
On Cardi B: Steve Madden Dominique Boots ($99). Style Notes: A polo dress usually can read a bit country club, but choosing one with a graphic pattern or in a bold colorway make the traditionally preppy piece feel unexpected.
On Cardi B: Alexander Wang Leather Tie Front Jacket ($3800); Steve Madden Dominique Boots ($100). Style Notes: The rapper chose an edgy twist on the classic trench coat to sit front row at NYFW.
On Cardi B: Christian Siriano blazer and trousers. Style Notes: Matching sets are the perfect way to look effortlessly polished. Top the look with a (faux) fur throw for added oomph.
On Cardi B: Marc Jacobs dress; Christian Louboutin Lady Peep Sling Heels ($945); Le Specs x Adam Selman The Last Lolita Cat-Eye Sunglasses ($120). Style Notes: Vintage-inspired fashion will never go out of style. Cardi’s head-to-toe retro look is accentuated by classic black gloves, cat-eye sunglasses, and a feather jacket. The results are nothing short of cool.
On Cardi B: Carolina Herrera Off-Shoulder Faille Wrap Cocktail Dress ($2690). Style Notes: The off-the-shoulder neckline and the slit up the front is a modern take on the classic LBD.
On Cardi B: Ashi dress; Christian Louboutin Follies Lace heels ($795); Messika jewelry. Style Notes: The voluminous sleeves and the long train add the perfect amount of drama to this red carpet look.
On Cardi B: Givenchy jacket and pants; Christian Louboutin So Kate 120 Pumps ($725). Style Notes: Cardi B’s all-red outfit proves that coordinating pieces in similar shades packs a punch. Bonus points if you can find accessories to match.

Reminder: What Kim Kardashian Wore to the Emmys in 2009

T minus three days until the Emmys, but don’t worry: That leaves plenty of time to binge-watch all the best nominated shows before finding out who takes home the statues. While we wait to see what Issa Rae, Millie Bobby Brown, and the rest of the nominees wear to the show, we figured we’d take a walk down memory lane to revisit what a certain reality star wore to the event almost 10 years ago.

In 2009, Kim Kardashian attended the Emmys in a white one-shoulder Ina Soltani gown, along with oversize hoop earrings and a matching white Swarovski clutch. Sister Kourtney also attended that year, wearing a strapless BCBG dress while pregnant with her first child, Mason. Kim also returned to the Emmys the following year, 2010, in another white gown, this time by Marchesa, with mom Kris Jenner in tow. Scroll down to see the throwback red carpet looks.
