There are some trends that we expect to have a longer shelf life than others, but believe me when I say bike shorts were not a trend that fell into the category of projected longevity. As much as we love the trend, the concept of wearing little spandex shorts alongside oversize tops and blazers seemed like it would lose its hype fairly quickly. However, according to the overwhelming presence of the style on Instagram during fashion month, we could not have been more wrong.

Both on and off the runway, influencers, celebrities, and editors ‘grammed the hell out of bike shorts. Thanks to the influencers’ insanely innovative styling techniques, we now have a laundry list of ways to wear the trend, and thanks to the runway, we have a shopping list worth looking forward to come spring. Ahead, get ready to see our favorite bike-short moments throughout fashion week and shop the pieces you’ll need to partake in the trend.

The key to everyday dressing is to find signature items you can wear on repeat and outfit combinations you can put on without even thinking twice. Studies have shown that we have a limited amount of mental energy when it comes to making decisions during the day, and we should make an effort to minimize our options when it comes to things like what to wear in the morning and where to go for lunch. These small decisions add up and consume energy that you could potentially save for serious situations like working on an upcoming project at work.

One thing I’ve found beneficial when trying to reduce the decision I make in the morning is crafting a signature everyday style and have a set of pieces I can always count on when getting dressed in the a.m. This simple adjustment has helped me avoid decision fatigue and makes for a breezier morning routine all around. Today I’m highlighting the three items I have to thank for easing my getting-ready process and have lowered my time making simple yet draining choices before I even leave my apartment. I narrowed it down to five different shoe styles that I’ve deemed investment-worthy and, therefore, the styles that are worth hunting down during massive Black Friday sales. Anyone who has ever watched Friends will know that you have to be very careful when investing in a pair of knee-high boots. One wrong move and you can end up like Monica Geller, piggy-backing barefoot after wearing an ill-fitting pair for too long.

Most boots look better with heels than with flat soles, however, this means they can result in a lot of hobbling and blisters, dramatically bringing down that cost per wear. Get a new pair of boots right, though, and you can wear them every day and with every outfit (maybe Monica was right about spending a little more on an investment pair). Knee-high boots are a classic that won’t go out of style, so it’s no wonder we’ve spotted so many winning pairs on influencers this season.

Affordable retailers like Mango and & Other Stories have created some headlining heels, meanwhile, on the luxury end, we are most taken aback by the boots from Saint Laurent, Gianvito Rossi, and Acne Studios. In terms of styles, you can never go wrong with a black leather pair. However, burgundy, white and buttery cream leather pairs are just as chic. Snakeskin boots might seem like a very 2018 fad, but even Anna Wintour has been wearing her animal-print boots for years—proving these aren’t just a “wear for one season” mistake.
