Think of the last clothing item you bought. Did you buy it because it’s trendy or because you know you’ll still wear it 10 years from now? I love a good of-the-moment buy as much as the next person, but it’s never quite as regret-free as the classic, versatile pieces that are perennially stylish. (Sorry, “ugly” sneakers and bike shorts.)
J.Crew has dubbed 10 specific items “the new icons,” and you’d be wise to take stock of your closet to see if you’re missing any of these staples. “The forever classics that have stood the test of time—in closets and in culture,” the brand explains on its website. “These are the pieces that never ever go out of style.” Luckily, all of these pieces are available at a wide range of prices from a slew of different designers, from Stella McCartney and Burberry to Mango and Uniqlo. Scroll down to see the 10 items J.Crew calls “forever classics.”
To some of us, a “fancy” gym outfit is a Lululemon sports bra or a pair of Sweaty Betty leggings—but not for the royal family. In fact, some of them play cricket in stilettos and throw rugby balls in Chanel. A royal tour always involves at least one game of cricket, hockey, or football. However, the royals tend to sprint in their suiting rather than change into leggings, which makes for a rather hilarious archive of “royals playing sports” pictures.
The Duchess of Cambridge has played cricket in black stilettos and a red pencil skirt suit, hockey in three-inch knee-high boots, and rugby in Chanel tweed, and taken part in a netball (which is similar to basketball) game in a tailored blazer and wedges. There are more pictures of her playing sports in heels than sneakers. The Duchess of Sussex is already learning how to #TrainLikeARoyal, as earlier this year, she played netball in an Oscar de la Renta blouse, Altuzarra trousers, and ultra-high stilettos. Princess Diana might have worn cycling shorts and sweatshirts to the gym, but there are plenty of pictures of her running in her finest skirts and throwing balls in heels. With the final season of the HBO monster hit series Game of Thrones coming out in 2019, Adidas is collaborating with the award-winning show for a GoT-inspired UltraBOOST line with multiple colorways to be released in 2019.
Like the Targaryen’s hair, the sneakers have all-white everything, except for three metallic silver stripes, and an ankle tab that features the GoT logo and reads “Fire and Blood.”
The sneakers feature a two-tone black and red upper, black midsole and outsole, and a black leather tongue with leather cage detailing. As with the other colorway, the ankle tab reads “Fire and Blood.”
While the official details and release date of the collection are still under wraps, sneaker insiders Yeezy Mafia had previously released teasers of the other Game of Thrones x adidas UltraBOOST colorways, which are inspired by the Starks, House Targaryen, White Walkers, House Lannister, and the Night’s Watch.
Here we go again. You may recall that retired boxing legend Floyd Mayweather stopped UFC star Conor McGregor in their mega-hyped 2017 pay-per-view bout, which made both fighters the kind of massive payday that other combat sports professional can only dream about.
And now undefeated UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, who choked out McGregor at UFC 229, has issued a challenge to lure Mayweather out of retirement for another boxing/MMA crossover fight that “Money” would again be a heavy favorite to win in the boxing ring.
Just one week after Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated former Mayweather foe Conor McGregor to defend his lightweight title at UFC 229 in Las Vegas, the Russian star attended a World Boxing Super Series card in Ekaterinburg on Saturday where he ran into Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe.
In a viral video that was posted on Instagram by boxing manager DeJuan Blake, a cousin of Mayweather, the 30-year-old Nurmagomedov (27-0 in MMA) laughed with Ellerbe as he challenged the 41-year-old Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs in boxing) to a fight.
“Let’s go Floyd, we have to fight now. 50-0 versus 27-0, two guys that never like lose. Let’s go, why not? Because in the jungle there is only one king, only one king. Of course I am the king. He can drop to McGregor but I drop him easily. That’s right, let’s go.”
Khabib pummels McGregor at UFC 229.
It didn’t take long for Mayweather to respond to Khabib’s challenge Monday via a Twitter post, saying “CBS, Showtime and MGM Grand get the checkbook out!”
Mayweather returned from a nearly two-year retirement in August 2017 when he stopped McGregor on his feet in a fight that sold 4.4 million pay-per-views and netted him a reported $300 million.
Although Mayweather said repeatedly ahead of the fight that he would retire for good, he has consistently kept his name in the headlines, including a public flirtation earlier this year that he was considering a fight in the UFC.
Mayweather made headlines on Sept. 15 in the early hours before the Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin rematch in Las Vegas when he tweeted a video of him meeting up with Manny Pacquiao at a Tokyo music festival.
Mayweather, who defeated Pacquiao in their 2015 megafight that shattered PPV records, hyped up the possibility of a rematch, which remains likely following Pacquiao’s decision to sign with Mayweather adviser Al Haymon.
Meanwhile, Khabib’s fight with McGregor is believed to have done more than 2 million pay-per-view buys, a new MMA record.
And Khabib’s profile has only risen after leaping out of the ring and sparking a wild post-fight melee after defeating McGregor. Khabib has been temporarily suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and has a hearing on Oct. 24 that will decide what long-term sanctions he may face in the UFC.
It’s pretty much scientifically proven: Sleep and loungewear are key not just to surviving but to thriving in the cold months. Plush, polished pieces designed to give you the warm fuzzies are all anybody wants to wear these days. They’re as much little luxuries for you as they are can’t-go-wrong holiday gifts for the ones you love.
“My favorite thing about our assortment is that there’s something for everyone. You’ll actually be able to find your personal style in sleepwear this winter,” says Bare Necessities buyer Megan Irvine, who built the mix this season around the three Cs: cozy, cool and comfy.
Keep warm and sleep well in the most incredible-feeling pieces. Lines likes Barefoot Dreams and UGG are legendary, and they’re a great value when you consider they can be worn inside and out of the house, too.
“Really the most important thing about sleepwear is that it feels good,” Megan says. “These styles are made of the softest, most decadent materials ever, so no matter what it’s like out, you’ll always be nice and toasty. And that goes a long way toward a good mood.”
Whether you’re running to the store or hanging out around the house, these snuggly styles are all perfectly appropriate:
Sure, it’s sleepwear, but make it fashion, darling. You care about how you look all day long; why give up at bedtime? Pajamas don’t have to be a snooze anymore. Design-minded brands like P.J. Salvage, DKNY, Calvin Klein, Kate Spade, Bluebella and ED Ellen DeGeneres (yep, that Ellen) are on the scene at night now.
“A lot of the top contemporary brands are moving into this category because they know women want to continue to express their personality from day into night,” says Megan. “Whatever it is you most love to wear—bold prints, feminine embellishments, modern minimalism—these lines are bringing sleepwear into the 21st century.”
You’ll feel more like you around the clock, and your housemates will appreciate the effort you put in when you wear the likes of:
Seasons change and trends come and go, but some styles are timeless. Tried-and-true sophisticated sleepwear (think Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Eileen West and N Natori) endures because it’s cut and styled for unadulterated comfort.
“Traditional motifs like flannel, plaid and piped trim will be loved by anyone on your list,” per Megan. “Lauren Ralph Lauren’s tailoring make sure you look good from bedtime to breakfast. PJ Harlow satin separates are great, upgraded basics you can stay in all day long and Ginia’s luxurious silks make you feel like a queen.” Which, of course, you are.
For your consideration, the following crisp-yet-comfy jammies:
Despite his decisive UFC 229 loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov, no one doubts that Conor McGregor is a superior athlete. He’s got power, speed and dazzling technique, and outside of other top MMA fighters, few men his size would dare to go up against him.
But athletic ability in one sport doesn’t always translate to another sport (see: Michael Jordan). And to be fair, the only football an Irishman might know is soccer, which doesn’t involve hands at all. All of this is preamble to saying yes, Conor McGregor looks like a toddler when he throws the pigskin, but he kind of has an excuse.
McGregor was hanging out with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for some reason when he decided it was time to goof around on the field. That’s when the unfortunate throw occurred, and NFL watchers with social media accounts proceeded do some pretty funny roasting of a man no one with a brain would ever roast to his face.
Conor McGregor doesn’t actually get enough credit for the fact he is perfectly capable of being self-effacing when he wants to be—and it looks like he totally knew he looked ridiculous and didn’t care.
After all, he was there in part to promote his new Proper 12 Irish whiskey, and he’s one of the kings of “any publicity is good publicity.” He’d probably make a round through every American sport, looking like a goofball the whole time, if it sold more bottles of hooch.
We already know that having sex not only feels spectacular, but it’s ridiculously good for your health, too. It boosts your immune system, protects from certain cancers, relieves stress, improves your mood, and helps you sleep better.
And now, thanks to a new study, we also know that it protects you from heart attacks and keeps your ticker in tip-top shape, so clearly, sex truly is a win-win activity and is definitely nature’s best medicine.
For the study, researchers tracked 1,165 men between the ages of 40 and 70 for an average of 16 years, and analyzed their health history in order to understand the relationship between sexual activity and cardiovascular health.
The research discovered that the men who had the most sex had the lowest risk of developing cardiovascular disease, and to get into more specifics, those who had sex two to three times per week were 45 percent less likely to have heart problems than those who only got it on once a month.
This study is particularly noteworthy because the researchers took factors like overall health, blood pressure, and whether the men were smokers or not into consideration, and the results still proved that sex alone is a factor powerful enough to reduce the risk of heart disease.
Lehmiller believes that the reason why sex is so good for heart health is because it’s a form of exercise, but more importantly because it’s a powerful stress reliever, which is always a good thing.
A separate study conducted at Princeton University found that having sex every day results in cell growth in the hippocampus — the area of your brain responsible in part for keeping stress levels in check — which means you’ll feel less stressed out.
Furthermore, researchers discovered in a different study that people who had sex daily for just two weeks had lower blood pressure than those who were chaste. And lower blood pressure means a lower risk of heart disease.
So, with that said, let’s all make an effort to have more sex. You know, for health reasons.
The Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl has famously made a habit out of bringing lucky fans onstage to rock out with the band. There was the guy dressed as Gene Simmons from KISS who played “Monkey Wrench” in Austin. Before that, another fan got the play the same song onstage in Australia. Then there was the University of South Carolina student who Grohl had play drums on “Under Pressure”, and well, the list goes on.
The latest Foo Fighters fan invited onstage to jam was the youngest yet: a 10-year-old named Collier Cash Rule who absolutely stole the show Friday night at a concert in Kansas City Missouri.
When Grohl asked if he could play any instruments and new any songs, Rule advised that he not only plays guitar but he knows plenty of Metallica songs to the whoops of the crowd.
Pretty soon, video posted on YouTube above showed that Rule did a surprisingly rocking cover of “Enter Sandman” with Rule on lead, playing Grohl’s guitar, and Grohl singing the 1991 hit, Side note: Ever notice that Grohl looks a bit like Hetfield did back when he still had long hair in the early 90s?
Anyways, Grohl and the rest of the Foos were so impressed by Rule, he was given Grohl’s guitar after the song ended, and gave Grohl a hug that might even bring a tear to your eye. And that was after young Collier played a little of “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” as a bonus. Basically, this kid totally crushed his moment in the spotlight.
After the concert, Rule’s mother told KMBC News that her son had been playing for two years, and practices every day before and after school.
Figuring out how to wear boyfriend jeans might not be the most difficult style challenge, but the thing is that they so often seem one-dimensional.
