5 Items That Make Your Outfits Instantly Sleeker

I don’t want to call myself a lazy dresser per se, but I honestly think there’s no way around it, so let’s just say I’m a lazy dresser. Despite caring quite a bit about how I look and, mainly, what I wear, when it comes time to actually put together an outfit in the morning, I tend to find myself wanting to go with the easiest, fastest route. If I could always have my way, that would involve some form of jeans, a T-shirt, and whatever add-on essentials that season’s weather calls for every time.

However, seeing as I can’t wear the same thing every day and need to go about my life looking like I’ve tried to some extent, I’ve come up with some methods for keeping my inherent lethargy from coming through in my outfits—at least part of the time. So, what do I do? Well, among other things, I invest in and keep certain items around that I know add polish to even the laziest and simplest of looks. Think long coats, structured bags, and more. To see what they all are and, of course, shop them, simply continue on below.

They create a long, lengthening line that streamlines your look.

I’ve Saved 73 Pictures of Cute Fall Outfits, and These Are by Far the Best

Let’s just say that since Instagram started allowing users to save posts, the screenshots folder of my phone hasn’t seen as much action. My collection pages, however? Those have become a key place for me to save whatever I’m seeing for the future, and right now my eyes are set on layered fall outfits.

Blame it on an unseasonably warm October in New York thus far, but all I can think about are sweaters, jackets, scarves, and all the other pieces of my closet that have barely seen the light of day so far. Thankfully, the time I’ve saved in putting together outfits for true fall temperature I’ve spent curating ideas of which looks to try ASAP that bring comfort, warmth, and creativity. Below are my 13 favorite current examples that utilize of-the-moment trends, classic autumnal fabrics and colors, and the clever layering tricks anyone can master.

The scarf and sunnies might say summer but not when paired with a cozy, lined windbreaker.
Light-as-air maxi dresses get the fall treatment with the addition of a corduroy jacket.
Breathe new life into your easy shirtdresses by pairing them with skinny jeans beneath. It’s also much warmer than just wearing it with tights.
The corduroys, the denim blazer, and the vintage tee are individually amazing, but so much better when worn together.
It’s fall so velvet pants can happy make a return to our wardrobes now.
Skinny jeans and a fuzzy oversize sweater will never not make our list.
A classic autumnal plaid feels fresh with a clashing color combination among your socks, blazer, and button-down top.
What this outfit tells us is that leopard is a neutral this fall and therefore a complement to your statement trenches.
The pairing of midi skirt, sweater, and tall boots keeps you covered head to toe (in clashing prints and colors, no less) but in a way that doesn’t feel bulky.
If you can still swing sandals and your favorite silk dresses, this oversize blazer is the ideal, unexpected topper.
We’re just eager for the days when fuzzy bomber jackets make regular appearances.
Fall calls for hiking boots. And it’s even better when paired with a chic, neutral-colored slip skirt–and-polo combination.
Give us all the (nearly) winter whites. Now.

‘Tis the season—not for watching Halloween movies, but for dressing like you’re in one.

The Outfit Combo I Swear By for All-Day Errands in NYC

When she’s not working with big names like Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Hudson, and Hilary Swank or acting in her capacity as the official Armi Captain at luxury rental and styling platform Armarium, celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger divulges her fashion expertise in our Ask a Stylist column. From the best places to source vintage to the secret to finding your most flattering jeans, come back each week for a professional’s perspective.

As for most adults, my weekends are typically packed with all the errands I didn’t quite get to during the week, like picking up my dry cleaning and taking pieces to the tailor—the list goes on. When it comes to dressing for these #adulting days, I have a signature outfit combination I swear by. Since I don’t want to look like a slob, I go for a practical yet polished uniform so that I can stylishly accomplish my tasks. I’ve found that I can’t go wrong with solid jeans (if you read my weekly column, then you know I swear by these ones from Madewell), a simple T-shirt layered under a slightly oversize blazer, polished accessories, and, of course, comfortable ballet flats. Functional and foolproof, it lends just enough personal style to my practical look. Shop the key pieces you need to add my reliable NYC outfit combination to your rotation below.

This Shrink-to-Fit Calculator Will Change the Way You Buy Jeans Forever

Did you know the way you care for your jeans should determine the size you need? Let us explain: A pair of raw-denim jeans typically shrinks 7% to 10% after the first wash and continues to conform to the wearer’s body after every wash and wear. That’s why it’s crucial to keep shrinkage in mind when buying a pair of raw denim jeans. According to the Levi’s 501 shrink-to-fit calculator, there are three main care methods (including how to shrink your jeans at home) that determine the size you should purchase. Thankfully, the brand’s denim experts created a handy guide to reference when searching for your perfect fit. Scroll through to learn more tips on how to determine your true denim size and how to shrink your jeans.

The method: Just wear the jeans as you normally would—no washing necessary. If you want them to smell fresh without putting them in the wash, opt for airing them out or freezing them. What to calculate: Buy one size smaller in the waist and a true length. The result: Your jeans will stretch to the right size after a few wears, leaving you with a perfectly worn-in look.
The method: Soak your jeans in a warm tub for at least 30 minutes, and then move around in them as the jeans dry to your body for a snug fit. What to calculate: Buy your true waist size and two sizes bigger in length. The result: A super-snug fit.
The method: Machine-wash your jeans inside out at 86°F, and hang to dry. What to calculate: Buy two sizes bigger in the waist and length. The result: The ability to wear and wash at your convenience without the risk of over-shrinking. Shop our favorite raw and selvedge denim picks below.
