Longines A-7 Pilot’s Watch Is a Salute To the 1930s Army Air Corps

In 1935 Swiss watch brand Longines, known for the accuracy and reliability of its timepieces, produced a pilot’s watch for the U.S. Army Air Corps, the aerial warfare service that later became the Air Force.

The Avigation Hack Watch Type A-7’s most distinctive feature was the dial tilted 40 degrees allowing pilots to read it without removing their hands from the controls.

At 44 mm the new version of the watch, re-issued as part of Longines’ cool Heritage Collection, may seem oversized but the original was derived from a pocket watch which also made it easier to read in midair.

At $4,250 this is one of the most expensive models Longines, long known for being among the more affordable Swiss luxury brands, has offered. A U.S. exclusive, only 100 pieces are being produced, and they’re going fast.

Like the original it’s a single-button (mono-pusher) chronograph designed for timing aeronautical maneuvers and comes on a weathered leather strap.

Nearly a decade before the A-7’s release Longines made history as the official timekeeper of Charles Lindbergh’s landmark solo flight across the Atlantic in the Spirit of St. Louis, and Lindbergh later developed a special Hour Angle watch for pilots with Longines.

And in 1938 when billionaire aviator Howard Hughes flew around the world in four days his plane was also equipped with Longines chronographs and chronometers.

Pieces from that era and an original A-7 from the brand’s private museum form part of an exhibition titled “An American Journey” that Longines will be staging around the country.

You don’t need to be a pilot to appreciate it or rock the angled watch face, but be prepared for lots of questions and more than a few envious glances.

Why ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin Stopped Drinking Beer

WWE icon “Stone Cold” Steve Austin is famous for guzzling beer in the ring, but for the sake of his health, he’s gone stone cold sober.

In his podcast The Steve Austin Show, the wrestler opened up about his decision to put the beer down and embrace a healthier lifestyle that doesn’t involve smashing two beer cans together and shotgunning the frothy elixir during his blockbuster WWE career.

“My eating program is going fantastic,” the 53-year-old explained. “[I’m] sticking to my exact macros. [I’ve had] zero alcohol for right at 14 days now.

“No alcohol, and when you hit the weights on a consistent basis and eat what you’re supposed to, it is amazing the difference that you can make or I’m making.

“Pounds are coming off. My strength is going up… I’m getting as strong as a horse over here,” he added.

Obviously, excessive alcohol consumption isn’t the best thing for the human body, and and when you stop drinking alcohol, your body perks right up. Even science says so.

According to a study published in the scientific journal The Lancetthere’s a “clear and convincing correlations between drinking and premature death, cancer, and cardiovascular problems.” And not to mention weight problems, considering there’s so many calories in alcoholic beverages.

However, I would also like to mention that other studies have found contradicting evidence that drinking is actually healthy, so I’m going to go ahead and believe that it is, because drinking beer is fun as hell.

Austin is also taking up a new hobby: Yoga. “I’m also doing my DDP Yoga shit. Hell, I’m going to jump up here and do the splits like a god-dang cheerleader in a minute!

“I’m flexible as a motherfucker. Dallas’ program works like a bitch,” he eloquently elaborated about the DDP Yoga program created by “Diamond” Dallas Page.

Austin also says he’s been trying out marijuana to take the edge off, too. Yay, weed!

However, he explains how, on a camping trip with his wife, he almost got busted at an inspection point for having a joint on him thanks to some police dogs.

Those dogs are smelling tires, and trunks, and license plates, and all kinds of stuff. And I’m sitting there thinking, ‘Boy, I’ve got that white-knuckle fever going on my damn steering wheel.

And I’m thinking, ‘Man, here I am, retired from the [pro] wrestling business, a global icon and a national treasure, and I’m about to get busted for fucking one joint because I wanted to try out a goddamn marijuana cigarette so I could get away from the booze!’

We go through there, the dude looks at me and I look at him…I’ve been passing through my whole damn life and they knew who we are and we always say ‘hi’ to them.

This was a fucking medical joint, smaller than a pencil. It probably weighed about two grams. I’m figuring, ‘Oh shit, man.’

That would be a misdemeanor, but it’d be on my fucking record and the last thing I want to do after all the bullshit I survived in the business of pro wrestling, was to get busted for goddamn possession of a fucking controlled substance.

But the story has a happy ending, obviously. “They waved us through.”

Dubai Police Will Patrol the Desert on This Flying Speeder Bike That’s Straight Out of ‘Star Wars’

It might be time to consider enrolling in the police academy and moving to Dubai. That’s because the Dubai cops not only have ridiculous rides like Bugatti and McLaren police cars, they have a Hoversurf Scorpion single-seat machine that is a cross between a drone and a Star Wars Imperial Speeder Bike.

A key difference between the fictional speeder bike the the Scorpion is the presence of four whirling propeller blades, which makes the prospect of riding among those spinning blades of potential dismemberment alarming.

Hoversurf CEO Alexander Atamanov confirmed in a 2017 Facebook post that Dubai police signed a memorandum of understanding for the the company to begin—with police support—assembling their bikes.

Now, General director of Dubai Police’s artificial intelligence department Brigadier Khalid Nasser Alrazooqi says the S3 2019 Hoverbike will be used by first responders to gain access areas officers can’t reach on foot or on wheels, and he plans on having them on duty by 2020.

Hoversurf tells CNN they’re not stopping with Dubai—hoverbikes may soon be everywhere. Company chief operating officer Joseph Segura-Conn says the company is “with three companies in different locations around the world” in addition to Dubai.

Dubai is obviously serious, which suggests they’ll need more officers to pilot their new machines. Get signed up at the police academy now to get in on this futuristic trend.

Let’s just hope the hoverbikes don’t hit any Ewoks.

Stan Lee, Marvel Comics Icon and Real-World Superhero, Dies at 95

Stan Lee, the legendary co-creator of Marvel Comics and countless beloved comic characters from Spider-Man to Black Panther, has passed away. He was 95.

The Bronx-born Lee began his career in 1939 as an interim editor at Timely Comics. Through his collaborations with the likes of Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he turned Timely into Marvel Comics and wove stories around a laundry list of characters who soon became household names.

Those characters—Iron Man, Hulk, Spider-Man and many, many others—would come together to form The Avengers, the group at the center of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that’s been shattering box office records for the past twenty years or so. While Lee stopped writing comics decades before the debut of 2008’s Iron Man, he assumed the role of Marvel’s most visible ambassador and his often funny cameos in each of the MCU films became familiar Easter eggs.

I had the good fortune to actually sit down and talk with Stan a few years ago. He was in his late 80s at the time and still on top of his game, wise-cracking and whip-smart. The interview was supposed to be about the Spider-Man video game du jour but our conversation veered way off track.

I was visibly nervous at meeting my idol, yet he put me at ease. He made jokes. He complimented my interview skills. He told me he liked Twitter but thought the word ‘tweet’ was wimpy and he raised his voice an octave to emphasize the point. We talked about the NYC of Lee’s pre-WWII youth vs new NYC. I was mesmerized by this famous octogenarian who didn’t just take the time to speak with me but to really connect with someone so thoroughly his junior in age and accomplishment.

Stories like mine are not unusual—fans knew Stan Lee as a humble and gracious man. His daughter J.C. said to TMZ after his passing that her “father loved all his fans. He was the greatest, most decent man.” Based on my own experience, I couldn’t agree more.

The last question I asked Stan in our interview was what superpower he’d want for himself. His answer was “Luck.”

I don’t know if he had the power of luck or not. For a guy who lived to 95, who found amazing success along the way, and who will go into the history books as a beloved icon and a cultural legend, I do know that the world was lucky to have Stan Lee in it.

RIP and…
