‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8: Release Date and Battle Scene Details Revealed

Game of Thrones is coming. Fans have been more than eager to know just when it will arrive, and now HBO has an answer: The spoiler Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) dropped back in January 2018 was accurate.

We return to Westeros in April 2019.

Emilia Clarke as Daenerys; Kit Harrington as Jon Snow

HBO made the announcement Tuesday with a new promo that sadly contained no new footage. Say what you will about GoT showrunners, they really know how to keep a secret. They did apparently allow Entertainment Weekly enough room to reveal the following about the final episodes:

At some point HBO will release a proper final-season trailer revealing more. Until then, here’s some basic setup we can tell you: Season 8 opens at Winterfell with an episode that contains plenty of callbacks to the show’s pilot. Instead of King Robert’s procession arriving, it’s Daenerys and her army.

What follows is a thrilling and tense intermingling of characters — some of whom have never previously met, many who have messy histories — as they all prepare to face the inevitable invasion of the Army of the Dead.

Fans who have been tuning in since the Thrones series premiere might make more sense of that than any newbie, and compared to previous hints and leaks, it’s a lot.

The following from the same article might get some attention from sleuths trying to predict events in the show. It’s gonna get really, really bloody. Like, even by Game of Thrones standards:

The drama builds to a confrontation with the Army of the Dead that’s expected to be the most sustained action sequence ever made for television or film.

One episode — the same that Benioff and Weiss were concerned about pulling off so many years ago — is wall-to-wall action, courtesy of “Battle of the Bastards” director Miguel Sapochnik.

Peter “Tyrion Lannister” Dinklage told EW that warfare in season 8 is going to be more lit than dragon fire: “It’s brutal. It makes the Battle of the Bastards look like a theme park.”

Daenerys and friend

In an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit, director David Nutter weighed in the violence level. Nutter, who directed episodes 1, 2, and 4 of the final season, also directed the infamously bloody “Red Wedding” in season 3.

He discussed directing that scene and the pressure he faced as well as fan reactions afterward. Then he said, “As far as season 8 compared to the Red Wedding I just have to tell you—hang onto your seat cause it’s going to be special.”

Regarding the final season in general, Nutter said it will be “Spectacular, inspiring, satisfying.”

So—Season 8 will be bloodier than ever, got it. It will also apparently be “mind-blowing and heart-breaking,” not all fans will be satisfied, and the Army of the Dead will be at the door, among other things.

For fans ready to get in the middle of all this and more, April 2019 just can’t come soon enough.

This $500,000 Timepiece Just Won the Oscars of Swiss Watchmaking

Luxury Swiss watchmaker Bovet has received plenty of attention for its Récital 22 Grand Récital over the prodigious price tag, which ranges from $469,800 to $502,200.

Now, Bovet has an appropriately glitzy award to support its implied contention that this horological masterpiece is worth that kind of money: top prize at the 2018 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie—a.k.a. the so-called “Oscars of Swiss watchmaking.”

Anyone lucky enough to wear a Grand Récital will feel like a living, breathing fine art display, with its hand-painted half-globe and 24-hour clock, tourbillon, and orbiting moon symbol orbiting over all.

Robb Report has some additional details about the watch and the company behind it:

The Bovet 1822 Recital 22 Grand Recital is the third and most complicated in a trilogy of astronomical complications made by this small independent brand, which makes only 2,000 watches a year.

The timepiece is equipped with a mind-boggling array of functions. Aside from hours, seconds, and retrograde minutes, there is day, month, year, moonphase, power reserve, flying tourbillon, perpetual calendar, double-face retrograde date, perpetual calendar and a tellurium-Orrery.

This Insane ‘Hyper-Sub’ Is Half-Speedboat, Half-Submarine

If James Bond drove an amphibious motorcycle that turns into a jet ski at the push of a button, then his villainous counterpart would definitely pilot this crazily unique watercraft that’s half-submarine, half-speedboat.

HSP Technologies claims that their Hyper-Sub Multipurpose Sub-Sea Vehicle, or Hyper-Sub MSV, is the world’s first long-range speedboat that’s also a true submarine.

On the surface, two 480-horsepower straight-six diesel engines can propel the 45-foot vessel along at a brisk 35 mph. At its cruise speed of 30 mph, it can travel up to 500 miles.

Upon arrival at a “point of interest,” the Hyper-Sub can dive up to 1,200 feet. Submerged propulsion comes courtesy of two 60-hp Innerspace thrusters capable of achieving a max speed of around 6.3 mph over a 300-mile range.

A crew can stay submerged comfortably for 12 hours and up to 96 hours in emergency situations.

HSP Technologies offers a number of different cabin configurations. Single-cabin layouts can comfortably accommodate a pilot and four passengers or a pilot and nine personnel with military-style seating. Two-cabin configurations that allow for more storage are also available.

With the functionality of a traditional boat, the Hyper-Sub is also the first submarine that can launch in only three feet of water. Plus, it totally wouldn’t look out of place parked in Batman’s garage, so you got that going for you, too.

Inside the ‘Sex Island’ Vacation That Sounds Like The Most Debauched Getaway Ever

Remember that wildly controversial sex and drug vacation in Colombia called “Sex Island” that was so damn wild it was banned by the Colombian government? But it still went ahead and happened anyway, albeit on a different island?

Initially, Sex Island was actually going to be held on a private island off the coast of Cartagena, Colombia, but the Colombian government shut it down.

So, the trip was relocated to an undisclosed luxury hotel on a private island in the Caribbean, where prostitution and brothels are legal. Problem solved!

Apparently, it was such a hit last year that it’s making a comeback this holiday season, with another four-day orgy in just a few weeks from December 14 to December 17.

Here’s what the tour package includes, according to the website (misspellings also courtesy of the site):

The even is in our private island. Enjoy de company of 60 beautiful latina girls, 2 hot DJ’s streaming the most exiting music all day and night, and a drug friendly environment. All the girls are here to please you and make you feel like a king, if you have any special fantasy make sure to inform the host, or the girls and they will make sure to bring them to life.

All our girls are tested and free of any sexual disease. There is also a very strict condom policy rule, and of course and unlimited amount of condoms. Party with our girls in our luxury yacht, have fun with jet skis, volleyball court, and of course breathtaking beaches in our sex island.

Sure, reading a poorly spelled description of the debaucherous event is cool and all, but here’s a closer look inside the wild sexperience where anything goes.

Speaking with the New York Post, a Sex Island representative says the event is the brainchild of five 30 and 40-something friends who “sort of think of themselves as Robin Hood.”

Um…okay?

The hard-partying group friends, who include a hedge fund manager and a nightclub owner, reportedly love throwing sex parties around the world, and ultimately decided to bring that drug-fueled party down to a tropical location.

And so, Sex Island was born, where tickets go for $6,000 and give you access to unlimited booze, countless prostitutes, and more hard drugs than your body can handle.

Speaking of drugs, Sex Island’s head of PR, “Tony,” says they actually don’t provide drugs. They provide dealers, which is even better, I guess, because you can get exactly what you want. Percocet? DMT? A bathtub of cocaine? You want it, you got it, my friend.

The drug of choice? Cocaine, obviously, with a “toothy pink powder” (I think it’s a synthetic opioid…) as the second most popular.

“We had a guest ask if he could bring a kilo of cocaine on an international flight and we told him that wasn’t the best idea,” Tony says.

Sex Island has hosted over a dozen private events like bachelor parties and a “boys weekend” for a group of wealthy men from Saudi Arabia, where the price per head ranges from $10,000 to $15,000.

And just what do you get for such a price tag? Literally anything you want.

“One of our clients has a fetish, he really likes high heels,” Tony said, explaining how a fleet of high heels was brought to the bedroom for sexytime. How they were used, I don’t know. But one can assume the prostitutes or the client wore them.

And apparently, another client wanted to go skydiving naked with the hookers…which he did. Like I said, anything goes.

One person, though, wanted to “keep” the prostitute. “He really, really liked her,” Tony says. “He was like, ‘I want to keep you.’”

“The only problem was that his friend also liked the same girl,” the Post explains. “However, Tony said the men came to a resolution when the amorous client gave the girl $10,000 and threw in $5,000 for his buddy.”

Sooo they bought the prostitute?

Anyway. As of right now, there are 29 tickets left for the December 14th sextravaganza, so you better act quick if you’re interested. It’d make a hell of a Christmas gift, too.

Dave Grohl’s First Big Splurge With Nirvana Money Was Inspired By His Love of Pulled Pork

As the drummer for one of the greatest rock bands of the 90s, then-twentysomething David Grohl could have purchased just about anything with his cut of Nirvana cash.

He didn’t buy an exotic supercar or a Beverly Hills mansion. All Grohl wanted was to chill out in a North Carolina beach town and chow down on pulled pork, an iconic Carolina BBQ speciality, in case you didn’t know.

“When Nirvana became popular, the first thing I did was buy a beach house in North Carolina and I just spent years there,” he recently told Uproxx. “I ate pulled pork fuckin’ from the time I was 22 ’til about 25 years old.”

The Foo Fighters frontman has since become insanely rich, with an estimated net worth of $280 million. But his love of eating and sharing BBQ has only grown.

The California resident recently reinforced his well-earned rep as the reigning “good guy” of rock by serving up a variety of smoked meats from his recently-launched Backbeat BBQ to California firefighters battling the Woolsey Fire in LA.

“It was awesome to get a visit tonight from Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters,” posted the Los Angeles County Fire Station 68 on Instagram. “He also treated us to some of his own Backbeat BBQ. Thanks Dave! It was excellent!”

Grohl’s lifelong affair with BBQ kicked into overdrive three years ago while he home-bound with a broken leg and all the time in the world to hone his process.

“You’re basically sitting there staring at these fucking thermometers all day long,” Grohl told Uproxx. “I’d just sit there for nine to 12 hours at a time just … oooommmmm … meditating and watching these temperature gauges.”

Being a musician first and a pit master second, it should come as no surprise that Grohl draws parallels between cooking BBQ and performing music.

“You have your specific recipe or your specific rub,” he said. “And, you know, the best feeling is when you have those big barbecues and I’m dolin’ out food for everyone and then they start coming back for seconds, it’s almost like performance in a way.”

“You know, you work all day long and then you present it to someone and it’s almost like making a song,” he added.

If you’re dying to try Groh’s culinary creations, a recent article posted to Foo Fighters Live suggests that his Backbeat BBQ brand will likely expand.

“The trademark information for the business suggests that we can expect Dave to release a range of sauces, marinades, rubs, and spice mixes, as well as merchandise and the possibility of a cookbook on top of its primary focus as a catering service.”

Meanwhile, in other Grohl news, the 49-year-old guitarist, drummer and singer revealed the surprising actor he wants to see play him in a biopic.

“I’m going for Shelley Duvall,” he said in recent interview with 95.5 KLOS.

“Like, look at Shelley Duvall from The Shining, she’s like, ’Get Away From Me! Get Away From Me!’. Like, that’s me. That’s totally me.”

We could definitely see it.
