Evolution by natural selection is immensely powerful — both in nature and within laboratories. Researchers have identified ‘Structural Capacitance Elements’ within proteins, which retain the potential to evolve into micro-structures following the introduction of a mutation. These mutated proteins are associated with many different types of human diseases, such as cancer. Understanding if and how a mutation may change the protein shape will be pivotal in targeting that protein for use in therapeutics.

Bismuth shows novel conducting properties

Scientists have discovered a new class of materials: higher-order topological insulators. Theoretical physicists first predicted the existence of these insulators with conducting properties on the edges of crystals rather than on their surface and their characteristic ability to conduct electricity without dissipation. Now, these novel properties are demonstrated experimentally in bismuth.

Apple will live stream its iPhone event on Twitter for the first time

Apple has been live streaming its product announcements for years, but the company has always tried to keep the events on-platform — until now. TechCrunch reports that, this year, Apple will also be streaming its iPhone announcement on Twitter, where it has the chance to reach a new audience who might not know to check out Apple’s website for a streaming link.

This is Apple’s second major expansion in streaming options this year. For WWDC, the company also opened streaming up to people using Chrome and Firefox — previously, Apple had limited viewing to Safari and Edge users only on the desktop. It had been a ridiculous and arbitrary constraint that really just served as an annoyance for the many Mac owners who use other browsers.

Impossible Aerospace wants to revolutionize drones, then aircraft

Drones are changing photography, but they’re also making it easier and cheaper to perform surveillance, monitor fields and crops, and inspect infrastructure. The problem is that most drones, even ones used in these commercial and industrial settings, wind up facing the same big problem: short battery life.

California-based startup Impossible Aerospace says it’s figured out a solution. The company — which came out of stealth on Monday by announcing a $9.4 million funding round, partially backed by Airbus’ venture wing — isn’t claiming any wild battery breakthrough or promising some flashy new-look dodecacopter concept. Instead, the company says it simply rethought the way drones are designed and built — apparently to great results….
