5 Great Reasons to Get Out and Hunt This Season

When we’re in our treestand hunting deer or canoeing through a duck swamp, it’s as if we are hunting a part of our everyday lives. Spending time outdoors in the natural world is as ingrained in us as going to work or cutting the grass.

Hunting is about much more than seeing wild animals as game. Along with the camaraderie that comes with hunting, it’s also the way that we see ourselves, others, and nature.

When I set out to write The Hunter’s Way, I could have never imagined the praise it would receive or the excitement that it would cause. I only set out to articulate the one thing that gives so many of us pause, whether that’s feeling the wind on our cheeks or seeing the warmth of the sun rising in the east.

From gaining an appreciation for nature to learning hard lessons in humility, here are five of the greatest reasons to get out and hunt this season.

Build an appreciation
for nature

We like to think of ourselves as a group of like-minded individuals who want to shed the dead-weight of store-bought meats. But as soon as we set out to produce our own food through hunting, we quickly learn to appreciate the fact that game prefers to run away as opposed to be eaten. If we had to chase down and catch a cheeseburger, we’d be a little more grateful that it doesn’t have legs.

Experience the never-ending mystery

Why is it that a wide load of birdshot can miss a duck at 15 yards? How does a rooster pheasant know how to escape across a busy road so you can’t shoot at it? It’s kind of like when you finally approach that woman who’s been looking across the room at you, only to find out that she’s interested in your friend.

Sometimes you make the shot, and other times you seem to be wearing cowbells. Mother nature rules, and the mighty hunter drools.

Learn to check your ego

For the astute hunter, animal welfare is all about taking good killshots that won’t unnecessarily harm the target. Wild animals have a way of reminding us of how skilled a hunter really is.

We get to laugh at ourselves

And brother, you better get used to it. Looking back, I’ve had some rotten failures that are now the stuff of legend among my friends and cohorts in the hunting community.

Between missed easy shots and countless pants-around-the-ankles moments, the great outdoors is where men and women go to find out where they really stand in the pecking order of life. And every single one of us gets pecked right down to our boots.

Get a good hunting story

You may think that it’s all about the way in which we relive the hunt by telling the tale of how we chased an animal that got away. But what storytelling really does is remind us of how much smarter the creature was than we were and the stunning way in which it defeated us.

This Bugatti Chiron Off-Road Concept Is the Perfect SUV for the Apocalypse

There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that when Bugatti created their insane Chiron supercar, they never intended it to be taken off-road. But that’s exactly what Estonian artist Rain Prisk has in mind for the seven-figure car.

The off-road rendering of the Chiron fits nicely with other renderings done by Prisk, who has a history of beefing up wheels and suspension and generally turning production cars into Frankenstein monster versions of themselves. A bruiser Chiron complete with winch and roof rack? Yes please.

Check out the official mock-ups of what Bugatti had in mind for an SUV. To call it tame in comparison to Prisk’s Chiron would be the understatement of the year. In fact, it’s hard to not prefer Prisk’s design over the ho-hum 4×4 Bugatti might actually put into production. It looks more like a Hyundai Tucson than anything worthy of the Bugatti name.

As more and more luxury car makers decide to put forth entries into the SUV category, Bugatti may not be far behind. Here’s hoping they take a cue from Prisk’s badass Chiron reimagination.

You Can Now Pre-Order the World’s First Personal Hoverbike For Just $150,000

The era of flying to work (or fleeing storm troopers through the forest) may soon be at hand. At least it will be if Hoversurf’s dream of a Star Wars-style personal hovering vehicle comes to fruition. And that dream is set to become a reality sooner than later because the company has opened up pre-orders on their Hoverbike S3 MAV.

The Hoverbike S3, as they’re calling it, is reminiscent of a traditional quad bike only with four heavy-duty propellers instead of wheels. Those propellers, combined with the S3’s lightweight, carbon-fiber body, can take an adult rider up to 16 feet off the ground at speeds up to 60 mph for 10-25 minutes depending on the rider’s weight and weather conditions. It appears the S3 may be capable of going higher and faster but those restrictions adhere with FAA compliance regulations.

There are no specific details laid out about the kind of licensing or certification required to pilot the S3 but it may be surprisingly accessible. The tech within the frame of this flying machine has auto-stabilizers, auto-takeoff and auto-landing capabilities—all suggesting anyone could hop on the S3 and fly. Balls of steel are likely still a requirement though.

The MSRP is currently $150,000. That’s pricey compared to that boring four-wheeled car in your garage, but it’s a pittance when compared to other personal aircraft. And the S3 is invaluable to anyone who ever watched the famous hover bike pursuit in Return of the Jedi.

Hoversurf is now taking pre-orders. A $10,000 deposit puts customers in line to receive their own Hoverbike S3 when it becomes available. Intrepid early adopters will be notified when their turn comes up to buy their own MAV from Hoversurf in 2019.

Shot by famed photographer Steven Klein, the cover of the “A9” issue was “inspired by the Japanese adult animated psychological thriller, ‘Perfect Blue,’ directed by Satoshi Kon.”

If you aren’t familiar with the movie, check out the trailer:

When he landed Kim for the cover, Richardson told Vanity Fair:

That would be the dream for anybody publishing a magazine, to be able to have Kim Kardashian on the cover.

I basically was working with Kanye on a couple of projects, so I had met with Kim … That was about a year and a half ago. A lot of energy went into getting it to work and making it happen. It was very cool, but logistically probably more challenging than anything we’d done before.

Fun fact: The cover profile of Kim K in the magazine was written by the author of American Psycho, Bret Easton Ellis.

Even though this cover is for the magazine’s 20th anniversary, it’s only the ninth issue that’s been published. Previous cover girls included Sasha Grey, Blac Chyna, and Jenna Jameson.
