Toyota is testing a much more efficient solar roof for its electric cars

Toyota will start testing a new solar roof for the Prius that it says can add as much as 44.5 km of range to the plug-in hybrid a day. The solar cells, which are being manufactured by Sharp, are just 0.03mm thick, but deliver around 860 watts of power, and can even charge the car while it’s being driven. Testing is due to start on public roads later this month, but there’s no word on when it might make it into a commercial vehicle.

This isn’t the first time Toyota has made solar panels available for its cars. Way back in 2010 the manufacturer sold panels that could be used to recharge the car’s auxiliary battery (which powers secondary systems like the sat-nav and climate control). The difference here is that the new panels are much…

10 Things Fashion Girls Always Wear With Jeans in the Summer

Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean we do away with our denim. In fact, it’s quite the opposite; we wear jeans all season long—from early June to late August and beyond. Don’t get us wrong: Breezy sundresses and lightweight shorts are summer staples, and we wear them with delight, but we also rely on our jeans to take just through the season. We just need to make sure that we have the key pieces to pair with them. Once we have those, we’re all set.

Fashion girls know what we’re talking about. With the amount of outfit inspo we have saved on Instagram, it’s clear to see that jeans are the basis for some of the best summer outfits, whether they’re wide-leg culottes; a slouchy, distressed style; or ever-classic skinny jeans. Keep scrolling to see the 10 things fashion girls always wear with their jeans in the summer.

You can’t ever go wrong by pairing jeans with a simple striped T-shirt (whether it’s short- or long-sleeved). It creates an outfit that’s casual, summery, and French girl–inspired (especially if you add a beret as a finishing touch, like Janelle from @waityouneedthis does here).

This long-sleeve, striped tee is soft and comfortable. Plus, since it’s stretchy and formfitting, it will become your go-to layering piece once the temperatures begin to drop in the late summer and fall.

There are three things we’d like to point out about cropped halter tops. The first is that the ’90s-inspired design is very on trend. The second is that they don’t cover much skin, which makes them nice and cool for wearing on hot, humid days. The third is that they look amazing when worn with a long pair of flared jeans.

We can always count on Urban Outfitters for trendy basics, like this seamless halter top.

Is there any outfit combination that’s more classic than jeans and a graphic tee? We don’t think so. Fashion girls don’t think so, either. They wear this combo all the time and especially in the summer. The best part is that with so many graphic tees, the outfit variations are almost endless.

Anine Bing’s cool graphic tees are a particular favorite among the fashion crowd.

Silk camisoles are our go-to piece when we want to look casual yet polished. No matter what color or design they come in, they bring a certain sophistication to an outfit. We like pairing them with high-waisted jeans so they billow out a bit around the waist, showing off their shiny texture and light-reflecting sheen.

We think this camisole would look best when tucked into a pair of high-waisted, light-wash jeans.

It’s no secret that strappy sandals are the unofficial shoe style of summer. Slip them on with your favorite pair of jeans to create an outfit that’s approved by fashion girls far and wide.

It seems like the exact pair of & Other Stories shoes @karenbritchick is wearing is currently out of stock. The good news is that this similar black pair is still available. Shop them while you can.

The other shoe style that fashion girls love to pair with jeans is the humble sporty sandal. While it might be rather controversial (you either love sporty sandals or you hate them), these shoes are certainly popular among the fashion elite.

This fabric pair from Chanel embodies the high-fashion way to do sporty sandals.

A button-down shirt takes a casual pair of jeans and makes them office-appropriate—especially when you add a structured bag and a pair of those aforementioned strappy sandals. Make sure you keep yourself cool and comfortable by opting for a cotton or linen button-down.

We like the vertical stripes that run down this linen shirt.

Fashion blogger Brittany Xavier proves that bandeau tops offer the perfect structured and sleek opposition to a pair of slouchy jeans. We like the way she plays up the bright-orange color of her bandeau; it feels particularly summery. We’re getting major vacation vibes from this outfit.

The top that @brittanyxavier wears is from fellow fashion blogger Camila Coelho’s collection.

Straw bags don’t have to be the big and floppy tote bags of yore. (Although, they certainly can be.) They can also be subtle, structured, and petite. Fashion girls pair these straw bags—which are either of the top-handle or crossbody variety—with culotte jeans, skinny jeans, and everything in between.

How chic and summery is this wicker bag from Botkier? Hold it by the top handle or sling it over your shoulder with the attached crossbody strap.

A bucket hat is another foolproof accessory to pair with jeans since both items have a certain effortless and casual air about them. It’s an outfit combination that’s all over Instagram right now and probably will be all summer long.

The best part about bucket hats is that they’re usually incredibly affordable. This canvas hat from Madewell is only $30.

Women’s World Cup Soccer Star Alex Morgan Causes Uproar With Tea-Sipping Victory Over British Team

Alex Morgan

The English do love their tea, but when it’s sipped from an imaginary cup by an American who just beat them at one of their signature sports, it’s “distasteful.”

United States women’s national soccer team forward Alex Morgan just found that out after her jokey tea-sipping celebration of the goal that ultimately won her team a berth in the finals of the Women’s World Cup with a 2-1 victory over England on Tuesday.

English soccer star Lianne Sanderson likely spoke for many of her aggrieved fellow Brits when she called Morgan out over the joke when speaking with beIN Sports after the match.

Sanderson acknowledged she could be misreading Morgan, but for her the gesture was “based upon playing against England.”

She admitted that the English do love tea, and while she’s not into it, “that’s what we’re connected with, so I think it’s a little bit distasteful.”

For her part, Morgan — one of the American team’s breakout stars alongside colorful, outspoken winger Megan Rapinoe, who didn’t play Tuesday — was anything but apologetic.

“This team is special,” tweeted Morgan, who also celebrated her 30th birthday Tuesday, “Thanks for the bday love. Thanks for the rocking stadium. Thanks for continuing to believe with us. And that’s the tea.”

The U.S. team has been accused of excessive celebration before, such as when they absolutely destroyed Thailand with a 13-0 shutout.

Alex Morgan

But the fact is, the American team is both dominant and charismatic, and it seems like much of the world simply doesn’t know how to deal with a badass American woman who openly celebrates winning because she’s very good at what she does.

That’s some bitter tea for an English athlete like Sanderson, but it’s pretty damn sweet for Alex Morgan and her teammates.

The US women play in the finals on Sunday, July 7.

The Best Cover-Ups for Summer 2019

Behind every great swimsuit is an amazing cover-up, so the saying goes (or something like that, anyway).

Bare Necessities swim buyer Megan Puma believes you don’t need a cover-up to expressly match every suit—the art is in the mix. “A cover-up should be this super easy thing you bring with you everywhere you go in summer,” she says. “They elevate and complete your look without taking up a lot of space. If you throw one in your carry-on, you can hit the beach right on arrival.”

Read on to see what stylish options she’s uncovered for every body that can take to to the beach—and beyond—all summer long.

Skirts, Pants and Sarongs
With so many fun, colorful options, bottom-friendly styles are really big this season. “I think it’s because you get coverage but also sexiness and fashion,” says Megan, who appreciates their versatility: Pair them not only with swim but with bodysuits or crop tops, too. And you can conceal stomach or thighs depending on how high you want to wear it.

Beach-to-Street Looks
What’s not to love about a light, airy cover-up that can double as an outfit? An elevated-looking romper or maxidress is ready to take you places on sunny days, be it the snack bar or cocktail hour al fresco. “Just throw a bandeau bikini top underneath, or keep a strapless bra in your bag to change into,” Megan says. With the effort it takes to change from flip-flops into wedges, you’re set to extend a beautiful day straight into the night.

Dresses and Tunics
When you think about cover-ups, these are most likely the classic tops that come to mind—straight-up summertime essentials in solid neutrals to pair with every last swimsuit you’ll ever buy. “They’ll wear out before they go out of style,” says Megan.

Fully Functional Fashion
“Sometimes, you want to wear a cover-up for reasons other than sun protection,” says Megan. Carrying around a cell phone and some cash calls for pockets; drying wet hair requires a hood. These easy-on zip-up kinds may negate the need to deal with a towel altogether, and sleeveless styles aren’t going to make you hotter than you already are. That’s what we call sun smart.

I couldn’t stop eating these for days.

I guess that isn’t the worst thing in the world, right? With all the greens, carrots, cabbage, bell pepper, cucumber and avocado, I think I’d be okay eating this until my wedding day.

Just please, serve me up a giant bowl of that peanut sauce. I think we’ve talked about this – this peanut sauce would make shoe leather taste like heaven.

But don’t worry – these crisp, crunchy, healthy and fresh veggie rainbow rolls will go down so easily.

And if you really wanted to save on time, you can prep all your vegetables (chopped, diced, cut and stored) ahead of time so you can simply wrap them up before serving.

Now these are best served immediately but they can also be chilled up to a few hours – just be sure to cover them up with lightly damp paper towels to keep from drying out.

30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 8 to 10 (10-inch) rice paper wrappers
  • 5 green leaf lettuce leaves, torn into large pieces
  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves
  • 3/4 cup fresh mint leaves
  • 3/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro leaves
  • 1 cup matchstick carrots
  • 1 cup shredded purple cabbage
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 English cucumber, seeded and cut into long matchsticks
  • 1 avocado, halved, peeled, seeded and thinly sliced
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

For the peanut sauce

  • 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 4 teaspoons reduced sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon chili garlic sauce, or more, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger

Directions:

  1. To make the peanut sauce, whisk together peanut butter, soy sauce, lime juice, brown sugar, chili garlic sauce and ginger in a small bowl. Whisk in 2-3 tablespoons water until desired consistency is reached; set aside.
  2. Working one at a time, wet rice paper for 10-15 seconds and transfer to a work surface. Place lettuce, basil, mint and cilantro in the center of each wrapper; top with carrots, cabbage, bell pepper, cucumber and avocado; season with salt and pepper, to taste.
  3. Bring the bottom edge of the wrap tightly over the filling and then folding in the sides, rolling from bottom to top until the top of the sheet is reached, being careful not to tear the rice paper; cover with damp paper towels. Repeat with remaining wrappers and filling.
  4. Serve immediately with peanut sauce.

Conceptual model can explain how thunderstorm clouds bunch together

Understanding how the weather and climate change is one of the most important challenges in science today. A new theoretical study presents a new mechanism for the self-aggregation of storm clouds, a phenomenon, by which storm clouds bunch together in dense clusters. The researcher used methods from complexity science, and applied them to formerly established research in meteorology on the behavior of thunderstorm clouds.
