Giants GM Downplays Rave Reviews for Team’s Draft: ‘You Don’t Win Games in April’

The Giants received rave reviews for their selections in last week’s NFL draft. Sports Illustrated’s Connor Orr assessed their draft as an A-minus, but the team’s leadership apparently thinks very little of draft grades. In fact, general manager Joe Schoen downplayed positive reviews of the team’s draft class.

“You don’t win games in April,” Schoen said, per NFL.com. “The social media rankings and everything like that, you know, it’s about what we do this fall and how we go out there and compete when it matters and how we continue to build this offseason and get bigger, faster, stronger, through our strength program and then how we prepare and execute in August. I think there’s a process.

“And do I like some of the guys we drafted? Yeah. But still … every year is different, and the team has got to gel, and we have got to build chemistry,” he continued. “We have to stay healthy. There’s a lot that goes into it.”

New York started the draft by trading up one spot to take Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks in the first round and then drafted Minnesota center John Michael Schmitz (No. 57), Tennessee receiver Jalin Hyatt (No. 73), Oklahoma running back Eric Gray (No. 172), Old Dominion defensive back Tre Hawkins III (No. 209), Oregon defensive tackle Jordon Riley (No. 243) and Houston safety Gervarrius Owens (No. 254).

This past season was the first year Schoen and coach Brian Daboll spent with the Giants, and it was nothing short of a u-turn compared to previous seasons. The team made the playoffs and upset the Vikings in the wild-card round to make it to the divisional round, where they eventually fell to the Eagles. It was a good first year for the new regime, but Schoen clearly has his eyes set on greater heights.

Schools bought millions of Chromebooks in 2020 — and three years later, they’re starting to break

Back in early 2020, as the covid pandemic drove classrooms online, school districts found themselves needing to bulk purchase affordable laptops that they could send home with their students. Quite a few turned to Chromebooks.

Three years later, the US Public Interest Research Group Education Fund concludes in a new report called Chromebook Churn that many of these batches are already beginning to break. That’s potentially costing districts money; PIRG estimates that “doubling the lifespan of Chromebooks could result in $1.8 billion in savings for taxpayers.” It also creates quite a bit of e-waste.

One of the big problems is repairability. Chromebooks are harder to upgrade and repair, on average, than Windows laptops. That’s in part,…

MLB Betting Trends: Expect Blue Jays to Win a Slugfest at Fenway

Looking to get in on the action for Monday’s MLB slate? Here are a few trends to consider before placing your wagers.

The Blue Jays have been hot, winning seven of their last 10 contests, and today they match up with the Red Sox at Fenway. The Red Sox have exceeded expectations and are only 3.5 games behind Toronto, but tonight they are starting Corey Kluber, who has been a disaster so far this season with an ERA of 6.75. On the other side is Jose Berrios, who has an ERA of 4.71 and has looked sharper across the last few games; however, with the wind blowing out at Fenway, a lot of runs could be expected tonight.

Want more reasons to consider the over?

  1. Bo Bichette is hitting .455 with two extra-base hits and three RBIs in just 11 at-bats vs. Kluber.
  2. Boston games have gone over 65.5% of the time this season.
  3. Both teams have scored an average of more than five runs per game across the past week.
  4. Boston’s Rafael Devers has the fourth-most RBIs in the MLB (27) while Toronto’s Matt Chapman has the fifth (25).

Bryce Harper’s return on tap

The Phillies are hot, having just snatched two of three from the reigning World Series champion Astros, and winning seven of their last 10. They’re going to have some swagger, too, with Bryce Harper possibly returning as soon as Tuesday. The Dodgers have also won seven of their last 10, and they get home-field advantage tonight vs. Philly. However, Tony Gonsolin will be getting his first start back from injury, which means he likely won’t be very long for the game, and the Dodgers will have to go to their bullpen. The Dodgers bullpen has an ERA of 3.74 across the past week, while the Phillies have been the best in the MLB with an ERA of 0.98. The current payout for the underdogs is +140.

Yankees continue to struggle

The New York Yankees are in last place in the AL East, despite owning a winning record (15-14). They are currently on a three-game skid, and they have only won three of their last 10 games. Needless to say, they don’t look as feisty without Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge. Over the past week, they have scored only 3.27 runs per game while Yankee pitchers have an ERA of 6.21. Today they matchup with the Guardians. Domingo German gets the start for the Yankees vs. a Cleveland team behind Cal Quantrill. Both pitchers have an ERA over five, but the Guardians have scored even fewer runs per game (3.00) than the Yankees this week. The Guardians have lost four of their last six, and have lost two in a row. Someone has to win tonight, and the Yankees are at home. Can the Bronx Bombers bounce back? I’d guess yes, but it’s good value for the visiting team to win this one outright.
