This week, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced its class of 2023, which includes Heat legend Dwyane Wade. The former shooting guard became the first player drafted by Miami to receive the honor, and the latest member to get in on the first ballot and to be voted in unanimously.

Wade posted a video on Twitter of Hall of Fame chairman Jerry Colangelo calling him to deliver the news, and Wade expressed how excited he was about the moment to both the viewers and to his family.

“That’s the call that I’ve watched people get for a long time,” he said.

The father of four then told his children they have to change his name in their phones from “dad” to “HOF.”

Additionally, Wade also shared a picture of a group of goats with social media to describe what it feels like to be a Hall of Famer.

Wade will be inducted into a class that includes Dirk Nowitzki, Tony Parker, Pau Gasol, Gregg Popovich and Becky Hammon. His enshrinement ceremony will take place on August 12 in Springfield, Mass. 

On the court, French center Victor Wembanyama is being billed as one of the best NBA draft prospects of his generation, renowned for his unprecedented versatility at the height of 7’5”.

As it turns out, that versatility extends to social media, too.

Wembanyama delivered a perfectly deadpan April Fools’ Day joke on Twitter Saturday morning, doubtlessly horrifying fans of the many teams gunning for his draft rights in the process.

On Thursday, parody account Buttcrack Sports tweeted that Wembanyama would not declare for the 2023 NBA draft, and instead would keep playing for Metropolitans 92 in Levallois-Perret, France.

Two days later, Wembanyama appeared to jokingly confirm the speculation.

“Yes indeed,” he tweeted, tagging Metropolitans 92 and adding a prayer emoji for good measure.

European players taking time to hone their skills before coming to America is a well-established practice, which at least made the joke plausible.

Wembanyama, however, is viewed as a unicorn, and is expected to hear his name called first in Brooklyn on June 22.

While Dawn Staley was not thrilled about South Carolina’s Final Four loss to Iowa on Friday, the legendary coach was also not happy about the ongoing negative labels attached to her basketball program.

Prior to Friday’s game, Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder referenced someone who described going up against the Gamecocks for rebounds was like “going to a bar fight.” Staley did not take kindly to those remarks. After Friday’s defeat, she addressed the stereotypes regarding her team’s physicality and style of play, something that has been a topic of discussion the entire season.

“We’re not bar fighters,” Staley said, per the Greenville News. “We’re not thugs. We’re not monkeys. We’re not street fighters. I do think that that’s sometimes brought into the game, and it hurts.”

The discussion about the Gamecocks’ approach to the game took center stage when UConn head coach Geno Auriemma criticized South Carolina’s physicality following the Huskies’ loss to the Gamecocks in February, saying he was “sick of it.”

However, Staley has remained true to her coaching philosophy. Revealing that she got word of several national media members making comments that she suggested were impolite and rude, she has no intention of changing her coaching style for anyone.

“You may not like how we play the game, you may not like it, that’s the way we play,” Staley said. “That’s the way I coach. … I’m not changing. We found success in it, and maybe some days like today, we end up on the losing side of the stick. But guess what? We live to see another day. We live to see the comeback next year and try to do this again because I’m not changing.”
