Makeup Melt Is a Thing of the Pastā€”These Setting Sprays Keep Oily Skin in Check

To be perfectly frank, makeup and oily skin don’t always mix. One minute your makeup can look perfectly intact, and the next, your face can be a total oil slick. However, that’s only if you don’t have the right tools. If your skin does tend to overproduce surface oil, aĀ good setting spray is absolutely key. Although some with oily skin might prefer matte formulas, even a good hydrating spray can work some serious wonders.Ā

Celebrity makeup artistĀ Sara Talias also has a few tips. “If you have oily skin, it’s best to avoid setting sprays that are too dewy or illuminating because they add moisture and reflective elements to the skin, which can make skin appear more oily,” she shares. Although this is a bit of a bummer if you’re like me and love a dewy finish, there are still some great options out there that leave your skin perfectly balanced and radiant without causing it to appear too oily. For a few of Talias’s setting-spray recommendations for oily skinĀ andĀ some of our favorites, keep scrolling.

“Urban Decayā€™s De-Slick Setting Spray has always been in my kit because it is the best for oily skin. It keeps the skin matte without drying it out. A pro tip is to mist the setting spray on skin before foundation to control oil.”

“TheĀ One/Size On ‘Til Dawn Setting Spray is amazing at keeping makeup in place for hours. It helps to keep shine to a minimum, and the fine mist helps to keep the makeup in place.”

This drugstore formula from Nyx offers a matte finish instantly to reduce surface shine and leaves your skin feeling fresh. It can also extend makeup wear for up to 16 hours.

This cult-loved setting spray from Benefit is micro-fine, waterproof, and smudge-proof for up to 16 hours. It minimizes pores and leaves skin hydrated without causing excess oil.

Self Beauty’s Matte Makeup Setting Spray adds radiance to the skin and provides a semi-matte finish. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid in the formula also help the skin maintain optimal water-oil balance so you won’t turn into an oil slick by the end of the day.

Although Milk’s Hydro Grip Spray doesn’t mattify, I’ve found that it helps keep my skin so balanced whenever I use it. It’s my favorite setting spray at the moment. I often use it for office days, and my makeup looks just as good when I get home at the end of the dayĀ as it did when I applied it in the morning. It also has lots of star ingredients like blue agave extract to grip makeup, cannabis-seed extract, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide to calm the skin.

This $6 formula from E.l.f. is a fan favorite for its ability to help improve makeup wearability and control shine. It’s also infused with vitamins B and E and arctium majus root to soothe and hydrate the skin.

The Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray is alcohol- and oil-free, making it a great choice for oily skin. It contains film-former polymers that form a strong but flexible film across the skin to keep makeup firmly locked in place without it melting over time. Japanese green tea in the formula also supports natural hydration levels in the skin, and resin blurs out the appearance of enlarged pores.

This mattifying spray from Black Radiance can be used as both a primer and setting spray to control surface oil.

Another fan favorite at the drugstore is Revlon’s PhotoReady Prep, Set, Refresh Mist. The formula is really hydrating, which will help keep skin balanced and stop it from overproducing excess oil throughout the day.

Fact: These 18 Neutral Nail Colors Look Stunning on Brown Skin

There’s nothing worst than taking the time to plan a trip to theĀ nail salon and realizing that none of the shades leave you with that clean, polished look you crave. The process of selecting a neutral shade that complements a deep skin tone can be made that much more difficult when there’s no immediate reference for how trendingĀ nude shades look on darker skin. (No one wants to spend their appointment testing endless similar polish shades.)Ā

As someone who’s experienced that painful process firsthand and is a self-proclaimed manicure enthusiast, I’m always on the hunt for neutral nail colors that are versatile enough to be great on any skin toneĀ and look absolutely immaculate on my own. Recently, I had the opportunity to go straight to the source and ask the ridiculously talented celeb nail artistĀ Elle Gerstein for her go-to shades as well as her tried-and-true process for creating the perfect manicure. Gerstein has been behind the gorgeous nail looks of celebrities like Lindsay Lohan, Storm Reid, Blake Lively, and Mariah Carey.Ā

Her philosophyĀ for achieving a clean, polished look for any manicure is to prep the nail and give it a great base coat like her personal favorite, Butter London’s Priming Base Coat. “[It] makes theĀ nailĀ have a good even base for sheerĀ colors,Ā as it will prevent and camouflage the streaking and discoloring,” she explains. “A lot of the newer base coats are like concealers forĀ nailĀ problems such as white spots, ridges, streaking, andĀ polish-stainedĀ nails,Ā as they disguise and conceal so you can wear sheerĀ colorsĀ and still look flawless.” After giving your nails the TLC they need, it’s time to move on to selecting your color. Keep scrolling to reveal the neutral nail colors we’re loving for medium- to deep-toned skin.

Show off deep skin tones by opting for pearly white polishes for a clean look. If you’d like to take it one step further to add a hint of eye-catching shimmer, try layering your chosen white shade with a sheer pearly polish like the one below by Nails Inc.Ā

Looking to add some warmth to your look? Try a nail polish shade that’s not quite orange or brown and has a rosy undertone to it.Ā It can be applied as a sheer pop of color to the nail butĀ is also buildable if you’re in the mood for something with a little more punch.

Take it from Gerstein: Rosy tones are the way to go. When deciding on a shade, she looks for a hueĀ that leans toward being sheer and brown to avoid it appearing white or opaque on darker skin tones. This one by LeChat Nails is her go-to color.

I’ll always love a good neutral, especially if it plays up the natural tone ofĀ my skin. For deeper skin, brown-based neutrals can serve as a versatile nude shade. It also helps that they’re all over the place right now and range from warm, sandy tones like the one above to nearly mauve. There’s one for everyone.

Off-white shades are universally flattering on all skin tones but look absolutely ethereal on deeper ones.Ā I’m loving both of these creamy white huesā€”one perfect is for everyday wear, and the other adds a dreamy finish to any night-out look.

Kick things up a notch by trying a toffee-beige shade for depth and dimension. Staying away from “muddy” brown can save your finished look from washing out your gorgeous skin. You’re welcome.

You can never go wrong with a pretty milky tone to bring a touch of effortlessĀ romance to your look.Ā My favorites are ones that goĀ on semi-sheer but giveĀ the nails a healthy-looking blush tone.

Another one of Gerstein’s top picks? A chic chocolate brown. Her favorite is LeChat Nails’ Nail Lacquer in Coco Kisses, as it “looks very polished without competing with the skin.”Ā
