How I travel… with explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes
The best travel advice comes from the people who have done it all before. In this series, we ask well-traveled experts for their tips and advice.
Sir Ranulph Fiennes, age 78, might be the world’s greatest living explorer. He holds the world record as the first person to reach both the North and South Poles by land, plus as the first person to cross both the Arctic and Antarctic Seas unsupported. At the age of 65, he climbed Mt Everest. He counts King Charles as a friend, who has said of him, “I’m somebody who greatly admires the kind of intrepid explorer activity undertaken by Ran.”
I live in Exmoor in the Southwest of England and traveled to Oxford yesterday to deliver a lecture to 900 people on competitive expeditions. I’m always moving around, and I love giving lectures. I am on tour into next year with my own show, Living Dangerously – I have 90 towns to visit! One day it might be on the south coast, the next day up in Scotland; sadly, it is not organized geographically. When it’s not too far, I prefer to come home afterward. The last time I was overseas was to Málaga in Spain, to deliver a lecture to top performers in a company, who had been flown out for a team-building motivational retreat.

I have never taken a traditional holiday to a beach or a city. For my last big trip, I traveled 2500km down the Nile with my cousin the actor Joseph Fiennes for a National Geographic series pre–COVID-19. It marked the 50th anniversary of my 1968 expedition on a hovercraft down the same river. I plan in summer of 2023 to return to British Columbia in Canada to retrace an expedition I did in 1971 by rubber boat from the remote forests of the Yukon to the USA border.
My longest trip started in 1979 and ended in 1982 – and took seven years to plan. I circumnavigated the world without flying. There was no GPS, no satnav. My wife plotted the entire trip on a globe using a crayon and we communicated via Morse code.
When traveling I listen to the radio in the car or the music of Enya. I read The Economist and The Week for a good summary of what’s happening.
I have lost fingers due to frostbite on expeditions. So I would tell anyone going into extreme weather to always take six-hour hand warmers. On expeditions I always carry a tube of Anthisan Cream in case of any bites, as it deals with the sting and itch straight away.
My earliest vacation memory is Kruger National Park with the family. I first traveled to South Africa when I was one year old, as my grandmother was South African. One of her sons was killed in WWI and my dad was killed in WWII four months before I was born. I was raised there until I was 12 years old, until I went to boarding school. I haven’t been back for about 20 years now.
The Isle of Man is somewhere I consider an underrated destination. It is close to the UK but not part of it. It is a wonderful place with history, and remains individual like Guernsey and Jersey.
If I could be anywhere right now, it would be somewhere hot and without rain. I have never been to China or India so either of those would be great to visit.

This Rare ‘Rambo Lambo’ SUV Can Be Yours
Before the “crossover” era downsized and homogenized the Sport Utility Vehicle’s stature, the term SUV referred to supersized vehicles—often with militaristic roots—capable of transporting passengers over the roughest terrain passable by a production automobile. The Lamborghini LM002, then, is the OG luxury SUV. And RM Sotheby’s is selling one this December.
The so-called “Rambo Lambo”—Rambo star Sylvester Stallone was reportedly an early owner—famously drew comparisons to a “street-legal Tiger Tank” upon its 1986 debut at the Brussels Motor Show.
While it certainly has no historical link to Nazi Germany’s dominating battle tank, the LM002’s roots can be traced back to 1977, when Lamborghini began developing a large, rear-engined all-terrain vehicle dubbed the Cheetah LM001 with the hopes of winning a U.S. Army contract.
The engine’s placement detracted from handling and interior space, so the LM001 never amounted to more than a prototype. But ex-Maserati designer Giulio Alfieri saw potential when he was was assigned to revise the design.
He moved the Countach-sourced 5.2-liter V12 to the front, which improved handling and weight distribution while opening up the interior to accommodate six passengers in a luxurious style becoming of energy executives and sheikhs. As such, it was appointed with cutting-edge. proprietary Pirelli Scorpion run-flat tires and a precursor of today’s GPS navigation systems.
While only approximately 300 were made, today’s booming luxury SUV market and the runaway success of the modern Lamborghini Urus vindicate the Rambo Lambo’s existence.
This car, chassis No. 279, is a 1991 model year from late in the LM002’s production cycle. RM Sotheby’s has more details on provenance:
Chassis number 279 completed factory assembly in June 1991. While the car’s early history is unknown, the center console retains a sticker representing the Japan Lamborghini Owner’s Club, indicating that it might have been owned by a Japanese enthusiast at some point.
By early 2014, the LM002 was acquired by the consignor, a discerning collector based in Kuwait. Numerous invoices on file reflect that the car was then regularly serviced by a local specialist, and odometer readings from 2014 to 2022 show a gradual accrual from 8,875 kilometers to 8,931 kilometers, a gain of just 56 kilometers (35 miles) over eight years.
In addition to regular fluid services, cleaning of the spark plugs, and recharging of the air conditioner, in 2014 the exhaust system was modified and the exterior was repainted in the car’s current shade of Rosso. In March 2020, the clutch was replaced and a new flywheel was installed.
This LM002’s eight-spoke OZ Ruote wheels are shod with proper Pirelli Scorpion tires, and the car is accompanied by a tool kit. The ivory leather upholstery and brown carpeting remain remarkably well-preserved, and the interior abounds with luxurious appointments such as the wood-veneer door trim and dashboard, power windows, and winch controls.
Expect this 1991 Lamborghini LM002 to fetch between $200,000 and $250,000 when it hits the auction block in Miami on December 10.

Fittingly, the design on the bottle itself almost pops like a work of art on a canvas rather than a traditional bottle of Scotch.
Chen sought to capture a spirit of unity and dependability in her vibrant design, she said in a statement.
“There’s a defiant energy to my illustrations which bring to life the vibrant spirit of the rabbit as it leaps across the design, symbolizing how we need to keep moving forward, spreading goodness throughout the year to come,” she said.
The whisky contained within the limited-edition bottle ([priced at $275) is just as special, with a velvety mouthfeel and tasting notes of rich spice, vanilla and honey.
A long, pepper and smoke finish caps off each sip of Johnnie Walker Blue Label, and the distillery notes a sip of iced water before each taste will bring out its carefully crafted, masterful blending.
Between the Scotch itself and the visually stunning bottle, the latest Johnnie Walker Lunar New Year Edition is worthy of celebration this holiday season.

Paige Spiranac Models ‘Golf Girl Outfits’ In New IG Video
Being Maxim’s “sexiest woman alive” and the world’s preeminent golf influencer, it goes without saying: No one heats up a golf course quite like Paige Spiranac.
The latest clip from the self-proclaimed “OG Insta golf girl” finds this fact in evidence. Spiranac showcases a variety of killer outfits to be donned at different types of courses, from a green “Country Club” dress, “Public Course” leggings and tanks, and of course, plunging crop tops and short skirts for “IG Golf Girl” photo ops.
No one look proved most popular as Spiranac’s 3.7 million followers responded to her inquiry into their favorite. One self-described “golf newbie” replied, “Do Instagram golf girls give you the credit you deserve for creating this world for us?!”
Spiranac also got back to a few fans, including one who, on behalf of their significant other, asked about the best attire for curvy female golfers who want to perfect their swing.
“Sports bras help. Have her stand a little farther away from the ball so she doesn’t feel jammed up at set up,” Spiranac offered. “It’s not the ‘proper’ way to swing but that’s the only thing that has helped me.”
