Report: Celtics Wouldn’t Keep Udoka From New HC Job

Boston suspended the head coach last week over a reported inappropriate workplace relationship.

Amid Ime Udoka’s one-year suspension, the Celtics “won’t stand in the way” if the coach pursues a coaching position elsewhere, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports. Wojnarowski added that there are teams who have been trying to find “preliminary understanding” of why Udoka was suspended before potentially pursuing him as a head coaching candidate.

This news comes in the same report that claims an independent law firm found that Udoka used crude language with a subordinate, which led to an inappropriate workplace relationship. As a result, Wojnarowski says that Udoka likely has a “difficult pathway” to return as the Celtics coach even after his suspension expires next year.

When Boston told Udoka of his suspension, the team reportedly made “no guarantees” that he would remain coach when eligible to return.

Last week, Boston suspended Udoka for having an “improper intimate and consensual relationship” with a female on the team’s staff, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. Boston was reportedly aware of the relationship in July with the belief that it was consensual, but began investigating further after the staff member said that Udoka made unwanted comments toward her.

The Celtics brought in an independent law firm to conduct the investigation prior to making the decision to suspend Udoka until June of 2023.

Eli Manning Trolls Arch Over Broken Yardage Record

The young quarterback broke two records held by his uncles with a 356-yard, seven touchdown performance.

Friday night was one for the record books for the Manning family. Arch Manning broke a pair of Isidore Newman career passing records previously held by his uncles: Eli Manning’s passing yardage record and Peyton Manning’s mark for passing touchdowns.

Arch only needed one half to reach those two marks, with an impressive 279 yards and five touchdowns by the game’s intermission and his team holding a 38–7 lead. He snapped a tie with Peyton at 93 career passing touchdowns with his first score of the day, and by the half had surpassed Eli’s 7,268 career passing yards.

The young Manning would go on to throw for 356 yards and seven touchdowns in an impressive 52–22 win for Isidore Newman over Pearl River, leading the team to a bounceback performance after the team suffered its first loss a week ago.

Eli, the comic of the family, took to Twitter late Friday night after the game to joke about his nephew usurping his yardage record and poking fun at how different the modern Isidore Newman offense is from the one he played in.

Of course, football’s shotgun-based offenses are here to stay, in large part because of Peyton’s exploits with the Colts and Broncos.

After he finishes his senior high school season, Arch—the No. 10 recruit in the SI99 rankings—is set to continue his football career under Steve Sarkisian at Texas. He committed to the Longhorns in June.

College Gameday is on-site at Clemson for Saturday night’s top-ten ACC matchup against NC State and will soon be joined by a former Tigers star to serve as this week’s guest picker.

Christian Wilkins, a former Clemson standout and current defensive tackle for the Dolphins, will take a seat at the College Gameday desk and make picks alongside the rest of the crew Saturday. The picks will be made just before noon ET.

Wilkins finished a four-year career as one of Clemson’s most decorated defensive players. He tallied 250 tackles, 41 tackles for loss, 16 sacks, three forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries over 59 games with the Tigers.

Wilkins was named a three-time All-American and became just the fifth unanimous All-American in school history in 2018. He was the first William V. Campbell Trophy winner in Clemson history.

The Dolphins selected Wilkins in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft and he’s quickly grown into a centerpiece of the defensive front in Miami. Through four games this season, he’s made 22 total tackles.
