Saying that I like to dress up would be the understatement of the year. Most days, I’m fully dressed (even when working from home, which I do most days) in heels and a dress, not to mention jewelry and accessories, by 9 in the morning if not earlier. Because of that, my standards for dresses have become quite high, with comfort, style, versatility, and more all factoring into my buying decisions in the dress department. 

Of late, though, I’ve started to get bored of the dresses in my current rotation, leading me to look elsewhere for new styles to add to my repertoire. Many hours and what felt like 10,000 dresses later, I narrowed my search down to just 38 options. There’s something magical about soaking up the sun while waves crash against the sand. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say that getting to the beach is far from magical. I live in New York, so logistically speaking, it’s always a bit of a trek to the water. Then, there is another dilemma: what to wear. Sure, a swimsuit is an obvious move, but if you’re anything like me, you don’t want to look like everyone else on the beach. So what does someone actually wear to look stylish at the beach?

In search of that answer, I scoured Instagram to find 12 beach outfit ideas approved by the fashion set, and I shopped out the key pieces so you can create the looks for yourself. There are a few wardrobe staples that every Paris-based fashion person I follow seems to wear on repeat. And yes, jeans are undoubtedly one of those essentials. It makes sense given that the perfect pair of blues adds a certain effortlessness to a look—very je ne sais quoi, if you will. But when Parisians aren’t wearing jeans, it appears there are a few key items they opt for instead.

Swimsuit season is in full swing, and if you’re anything like me, you’re probably looking to add a new suit (or two) to your repertoire in the upcoming weeks. Luckily, there are plenty of chic swimwear trends for the taking this summer to suit every style aesthetic.

To get some further swimwear shopping guidance, I tapped Lauren Quinn, swimwear designer and founder of Bromelia, an ethically made swimwear brand based in L.A. Quinn has a few tips when it comes to swimwear shopping. “You make your best memories of the year in your swimsuit, so it’s worth putting some time and effort into trying plenty of options. There’s a style out there for everyone. I spend a lot of time with women at our flagship store on Abbott Kinney in Venice, and I always say to them that the best way to find your swimsuit is when you leave the dread of swimwear shopping behind and enjoy the process. Some of the most popular styles we’re seeing women gravitate toward this summer are string triangle tops (worn several different ways), high-leg bikini bottoms, strappy one-pieces, and cinched-waist one-pieces,” she says. “Look for clean-finish seams in bottoms and one-pieces—i.e., soft, turned-in edges. This helps to avoid the four-cheek look. If you’d like to give your chest a light lift, try a fixed triangle top with binding under the bust instead of a wire. It brings your bust to the party in a natural way. And ruching on a bikini bottom is your best bikini tool! This single piece of thread helps to define the roundness and give the look of a lift.”
