Borrowed gene helps maize adapt to high elevations, cold temperatures

An important gene in maize called HPC1 modulates certain chemical processes that contribute to flowering time, and has its origins in ‘teosinte mexicana,’ a precursor to modern-day corn that grows wild in the highlands of Mexico. The findings provide insight into plant evolution and trait selection, and could have implications for corn and other crops’ adaptation to low temperatures.

4 Fresh Outfit Ideas That Are Perfect for Any Summer Occasion

My summer social calendar is filling up quickly, and quite frankly, my closet can’t keep up. While I’m all for being an outfit repeater, I’m not not looking for fun new pieces that I can sneak into my lineup. (C’mon, I’m only human.) And lately, I’ve been seeing so many chic summer things from the one and only Lilly Pulitzer. I swear everyone on social media is posting pics of themselves wearing the iconic designer at brunch, on boat days, and during pool hangs, and it’s all giving me major outfit inspiration. But when digital creators Alisha Donnell and Kyra Aaliyah posted their latest Lilly ‘fits, I knew I couldn’t resist anymore—I immediately needed these pieces in my closet for my sunny-day activities. Keep scrolling to see their ultra-cute ‘fits and where they’re planning to wear them this summer.

“You’ll find me at the beach in this outfit all summer long. I paired the one-piece and linen button-down with an oversize straw hat and comfy slip-on shoes to really capture the beachy summer aesthetic. I love this look for the beach for a couple of reasons: A white linen button-down can really elevate a summer look, and this one-piece is so comfortable when I want to be more active at the beach. When I put the look together, I didn’t want to put too many patterns on top of each other, so the patterned swimsuit is a perfect contrast to the white linen shirt.” — Kyra Aaliyah, digital content creator

“I’ll be wearing this pretty pink set to a sunset dinner. For this look, I decided to pair the top and skirt with a simple nude heel and dainty gold jewelry. Since the pattern is already so fun and bright, I wanted to keep accessories to a minimum and let the set really stand on its own as the main character. My accessories enhance this look to make it more elegant, but they don’t overpower it, which is key for me. I also love how versatile the top is. You can wear the sleeves off the shoulder or on the shoulder as a puff-sleeve look.” — Aaliyah

“This versatile top is perfect for so many occasions, from brunch to coffee dates. Comfort is a top priority when I’m putting together an outfit, and this no-fuss top is so comfortable. (Plus, it adds a splash of color to an outfit.) The baby-doll cut is something I haven’t seen in a bit, which I find refreshing and really fun to style. I love that this is a top you can easily dress up or down. To dress it down, shorts will pair perfectly. But if you’re going for a more dressed-up look, any tailored pants will complement the top beautifully.” — Alisha Donnell, digital content creator

“An outdoor picnic is a perfect backdrop for this fun romper. Gingham is always the best pattern for the occasion. I styled this look with a simple pair of wrap-up sandals, as I wanted the colorful romper to shine while keeping accessories minimal. And the best part of this piece? On the outside, it looks like a dress, but underneath are shorts, which means I can easily move around in it. That plus the romper’s fun color and puff sleeves check off just about every box for me, making this a must-have for the season.” — Donnell

Going Somewhere? Here’s What 2 Fashion People Are Packing for Their Next Getaway

It seems like every time I go anywhere, I overhear people talking about their travel plans. Whether it’s a roundtrip ticket to Mykonos for an all-inclusive getaway or a staycation in Malibu at a shared house with friends, it seems like we’re all more than ready for a little R&R. And to make the packing process a little easier (does choosing Insta-worthy ‘fits for vaycay give anyone else major anxiety?), I tapped two fashion insiders to give me the low-down on what they’re stuffing in their suitcases for their upcoming trips. The consensus? A bunch of Lilly Pulitzer. Can you blame them, though? Going onto the Lilly Pulitzer site is basically stepping into a virtual tropical oasis with bright colors and splashy prints jumping out at you on every page. Keep scrolling to see their vacation-worthy looks. (And, just a warning, be ready to book your next flight.)

“This summer, we’re heading back home to NYC for a week. We’ve been living in Miami for almost a year, so we’re super excited to go back and catch up with friends and family as well as visit some of our favorite places in the city. I’m excited to wear this set on walks around the city. I styled this look with white sneakers, a simple top-handle bag, fun sunglasses, and gold jewelry—so it’s comfortable yet super stylish. I love dressing up, but having a casual look in my suitcase for walks or breakfast is always a must.”

“I’ll be wearing this dress for a brunch during a staycation type of day in my own city. This look gives off major getaway vibes as it’s colorful, lightweight, and unique. It makes me want to just kick back and have some fun! And I love the way the dress fits—I’m 5’5″, and the length is perfect on me. I also love that I can dress it up or down with some flat sandals. My favorite summer accessories are sunglasses and gold jewelry (they look great with everything), so they were definitely a must when styling this dress.”

“When packing for vacation I tend to gravitate toward easy, versatile pieces that can be worn day or night. And this dress is just that—it’s simple, elegant, and multi-functional. You can wear it almost anywhere: a dinner date, breakfast, sightseeing in the city, and so much more. When it comes to styling, I think keeping it simple is key since the dress has three colors. You want it to be the main focus of your outfit. Shoes and accessories should be a solid color with no prints or patterns.”

“I have a trip planned to Hawaii this summer, and this pink dress is first on my packing list. Everyone needs a breezy dress that’s practical for those hot summer days, especially in humid Hawaii. It’s easy to throw on when you don’t want to make an effort but still want to look chic. I love that I can wear it with anything (in this case, an ultra-cute straw bag) and feel happy in it. It’s easy to style, fits amazing, and will keep me cool all summer.”

7 Major Shoe Trends That Will Be Everywhere This Fall

Taking a closer look at the fall/winter 2022 collections that debuted earlier this year, there are some key shoe trends to have on your radar for the upcoming season. While there are so many major trends worth noting for the season—ranging from floor-sweeping hemlines to the “new” new bomber jackets—I’m here to narrow in on the coolest fall shoe trends for 2022.

There were many notable styles introduced by designers, but there are seven trends that are the most important to know for the season ahead. Rather than focus on any seasonal basics, I’m highlighting the most directional footwear that I predict will have a big impact on fashion for the upcoming season. The shortlist includes the silhouettes taking over and the boots that are already going viral among the fashion set. Here, read on for the seven key fall shoe trends for 2022.

Mary Janes were one of the standout silhouettes on the F/W 22 runways. These aren’t your ordinary Mary Janes, though. The latest iterations are finished with big platforms, wedge heels, XXL buckles, and sculptural shapes, as spotted at Bottega Veneta, Prada, and Versace. I’m already predicting that Mary Janes 2.0 will be one of the key shoe shapes for fall 2022.

Ballet flats are returning with a vengeance. Conjuring early 2000s Kate Moss when ballet flats had a major fashion moment, the shoes are back with the “cool girl” stamp of approval from brands including Miu Miu, Khaite, and Proenza Schouler. With balletcore on the rise, it’s only fitting that the dance shoes make their comeback.

In the early 2010s, motorcycle boots were a mainstay on the street style scene and a favorite shoe among the model-off-duty set. The motorcycle boots of that time were heavier, more traditional takes on the shoe, but now we’re seeing them return with new interpretations including everything from boots to heeled versions. In part, we can thank Balenciaga for ushering in the trend. The brand’s cult Cagole shoes—incorporating the grommets and tassels of the iconic Y2K motorcycle bag—have become the most in-demand boots of 2022. We’ll see more designers tapping into the aesthetic when fall arrives.

As designers infuse more elements of fun into their collections, we’re seeing an uptick in all things shimmery and shiny. From metallic over-the-knee boots styled with sequined slip dresses at Bottega Veneta to gold foil-like mules paired with pastel dresses at Jil Sander, this is exactly the type of mood-boosting fashion we’ve been waiting for that we can look forward to for the season ahead.

The major boot trend to have on your radar for fall? Waders—a shoe style spotted on the F/W 22 runways at Chanel, ACNE Studios, and Bottega Veneta. The tall boots go beyond your average over-the-knee styles, with wide shapes that rise to the mid-thigh. Paired with micro silhouettes including shirtdresses and tweed jackets, this is how I expect to see them worn among the street style set during Fashion Month.

Over-the-knee boots as a whole were one of the standout silhouettes of the season, and in addition to wide waders, fall will also mark the return of tall glove-like boots that fit tight on the legs. At Saint Laurent, Burberry, and Balenciaga, the boots were designed in everything from shiny leather to printed florals.

Fuzzy things are taking over for fall 2022, including everything from handbags to footwear. While it may feel less wearable than some of the other trends coming up for fall, there are already signs that it will pick up even more steam. Fuzzy shoes are continuing into the Resort 2023 collections as well—notably at Khaite—which means that fashion people are sure to adopt them into their wardrobes in no time.

Cameron Diaz is making a comeback. The gorgeous actress and OG Maxim cover model will co-star alongside Jamie Foxx in a Netflix original movie called Back In Action, a fact that was revealed with a clever promotional stunt.

Foxx tweeted a recording of a phone call with Diaz, in she admits to being nervous about making her first movie since 2014’s Annie.

“I’m like pacing the room,” Diaz said expressing apprehension over a return to movie making. “I feel excited, but I don’t know how to do this, you know?”

Foxx then looped her in with perhaps the most famous un-retiree of 2022: Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, who announced his NFL return just 40 days after hanging up his jersey.

“I was talking to Jamie and he said you need a few tips on how to un-retire,” Brady quipped. “I’m relatively successful at un-retiring.”

“Cameron I hope you aren’t mad I recorded this, but no turning back now. Had to call in the GOAT to bring back another GOAT,” Foxx captioned the recording, adding, “Thanks @TomBrady for the assist.”

As USA Today points out, Netflix quoted Foxx’s tweet and updated its bio to read, “Thank you Cameron Diaz.”

The action-comedy film will be directed by Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, Baywatch and The Lost City)— Gordon will also co-write the script with screenwriter Brendan O’Brien.
