5 Qualities Every Business Leader Needs, According to Two Successful Entrepreneurs

Learning how to lead often happens through trial and error, discovering that what you thought was a path to success was actually a dead-end. And these lessons can be especially excruciating when you have to turn back and explain to those that followed you that you chose the wrong route.

Is there a way to develop the skills of a leader without having to make mistakes? We reached out to two prominent entrepreneurs, Jose Pena and Camilo Doumat, who have extensive experience with leadership within their respective industries.

Record executive and music producer Pena has led the way for new voices to emerge and find success within the music industry. With his ecommerce business, Doumat has led countless small businesses straight to the top of their industry.

Here, Pena and Doumat break down five essential qualities that every leader should have.

Self-confidence

According to Pena, though it may sound redundant to say that a leader needs confidence, it needs to be mentioned. Because without self-confidence, no one would even consider following a path that you have paved. Doumat agrees, but he also advises against confusing arrogance for self-belief and recommends remaining humble.

Humility

Expanding on his previous point, Doumat asserts that humility is an essential trait in order for a leader to remain grounded and empathic to those he is leading. Pena also shares this view, explaining that staying humble means that you remain grateful for all that is done for you to help you on your way to success.

Honesty

The insidious fake-it-till-you-make-it culture of social media can easily cause us to exaggerate our wins and conceal our losses, but both Pena and Doumat insist that transparency is essential in a leader. If those who follow you start to suspect that you are being untruthful about the direction you are leading them in, they will likely abandon the journey.

Dedication

Doumat shares that success is inevitable when failure is not enough to deter someone from their goal. This belief is the reason why he classes determination as being one of the most important qualities that a leader can have. Pena is in agreement, sharing that dedication is a vital tool in helping others realize you are worth following.

Strong Communication Skills

Pena explains that an incredible battle plan for success means nothing if you can’t communicate your plans to those you are trying to lead. According to Doumat, a good understanding of the key principles of communication equips you perfectly to share your ideas and inspire others.

Putting your hand up and taking the lead can feel daunting, and sometimes, it feels easier to step back and blend in with the flock. However, Pena and Doumat believe that we need to reject that impulse and remember that anyone can become a great leader as long as they inculcate the above-mentioned qualities.

17 Peach Lipsticks to Wear Every Day This Summer and Beyond

As an Atlanta native, I’m partial to a late-summer peach. (It’s one of the only things I can claim to have in common with Justin Bieber, actually.) And no offense to the fruit itself, but this year, my interest lies mostly in the lip-color form. From juicy, sheer shades to bright mattes, a peach lip is surprisingly versatile and undoubtedly summery—although, the color can absolutely be worn year-round, too.

One thing you may notice as you scroll, however, is that brands have wide-ranging perceptions about what color, exactly, a peach is—a conflict that actually works in our favor. Because some shades veer more on the pink side, others are more coral, and others are a bit more orange, you have your pick of the bushel. So no matter which version of “peach” you’re looking for, it can be found in this roundup of the 17 lip colors worth wearing during peak season and beyond.

Did you know Nars’s best-selling Orgasm blush—you know, the cheekily named shimmery peach that looks perfect on everyone—also comes in lipstick form? Run, don’t walk.

Not only is this pretty matte shade designed to look fantastic on every skin tone, but thanks to the addition of hydrating hyaluronic acid, it stays creamy and velvety even after hours of wear.

This sheer, glossy lipstick complements all skin tones and goes with just about every makeup look.

This affordable favorite has just the right amount of sheen, and it’s pretty much the platonic ideal of the barely there neutral.

This stunning pinky-peach is extra matte, but somehow doesn’t feel dry at all. What is this wizardry?!

Few products are as convenient for on-the-go application as a crayon, and with jojoba oil and shea butter, it’s also extra-nourishing. But what else would you expect from the purveyor of one of the world’s best lip balms?

Moisturizing and just sheer enough, this is the balm-lipstick hybrid you’ll want to keep in every room, bag, and pocket within reach.

From the printed tube to the moisturizing formula, this Gucci lipstick is, in a word, brilliant. And the color may be the most spot-on representation of “peach” we’ve seen.

The shade makes a statement without being so over-the-top you can’t wear it every day, and the creamy formula keeps lips moisturized for up to six hours.

Liquid lipsticks are known for their stamina, and this vegan formula lasts up to a whopping 16 hours.

With this shade’s subtle peachy tint, moisturizing formula, and non-sticky feel, you won’t mind that it technically isn’t a lipstick one bit.

Sleek and functional: The gold tube that houses this peachy-pink lipstick isn’t just nice to look at; it’s also refillable.

This non-greasy balm imparts a sheer wash of Popsicle-like color that screams summer. Although, you’ll want to wear it 365 days a year.

This shade is a little brighter than your average peach, and the luxe formula provides a smooth, plump finish.

There are sheer, glossy lipsticks, and then there are Chanel sheer, glossy lipsticks. With its just-bitten color, high-shine finish, and chic-as-can-be packaging, it’s one investment product that’s worth it.

If you prefer your peach to veer more orange than pink, this creamy (and hard-to-find!) color is for you.

The trifecta of jojoba seed oil, shea butter, and murumuru butter makes this crayon ultra nourishing, while the color is one of those magical hues that seem to work on every skin tone.

Looking for bold lip colors, too? Our editors are freaking out over these bright lipsticks.

46 Celebs and Fashion People Who Are Making Me Want to Chop Off All My Hair

When it comes to my hair, I tend to fluctuate between two lengths: just above my shoulder or just above my boobs (both technical terms). Yet there always comes a time with both lengths when I start to feel like I want to either chop it all off and start again or indulge my inner Rapunzel and grow it out super long.

Right about now, I’m at the “chopping it all off” stage, mainly down to the fact that I’m seeing cool, short hairstyles pretty much everywhere I look and the fact that I can’t get a haircut right now. Yes, short hair is definitely trending, and I want in. However, before I sprint to the salon, I think it’s best I start to garner some expert advice on potential styles.

“Short hairstyles are on-trend at the moment,” confirmed Neil Barton, Goldwell ambassador and owner of Neil Barton Hairdressing. “Other than the bob and the pixie cut, there are a few other short hairstyles, and this includes the lob—perfect for those who can’t decide whether to keep their length or go shorter. Another short hairstyle that I love is the buzz cut.”

If you’re also toying with the idea of going for the chop, I’ve rounded up some of the best short-hair inspiration around for you to feast your eyes on. Whether you’re dreaming of a brunette blunt bob or a soft blonde bob, there’s a style out there for you. Similarly, if you have hit a certain age and feel fed up with managing long lengths, a short cut could be the perfect option.

Keep scrolling to see all of the ways women are wearing bobs, lobspixie cuts, and buzz cuts right now. Plus, I caught up with some hairstylists for expert tips on how to decide which style is best for you, what to ask your hairdresser, and how to care for and style your shorter strands.

Short, wavy hair + fringe = the formula for cool-girl hair.

Probably the most classic short hairstyle, a bob is a one-length cut that typically sits around jaw level. Although, it can be as short as ear length and as long as just above the shoulder. It’s a great place to start if you’re venturing into short hair for the first time. “There are so many bob variations with a style to suit everyone’s face shape,” said Barton. “Round faces should try to opt for a long bob that goes past the chin, [which is] also great for heart-shaped faces as well as heavy, chin-length bobs, which can balance out the face and look particularly great when worn tapered or with a side fringe. For long and oval face shapes, precise and blunt bobs are fantastic and enhance a strong jaw.”

While technically bobs are one length, Holly’s new asymmetric style is kept slightly longer at the front—and it looks so cool.

Worried that a bob might be too high-maintenance? A middle parting teamed with a natural, gentle wave makes for the most laid-back of styles.

Beach waves add plenty of texture to Jourdan’s mid-length bob.

Who says your bob can’t be bright? Follow Michelle’s lead and opt for a rainbow hue.

Fearne took the plunge and chopped her long hair into this cute curled bob.

I love the blunt ends of Aïda’s polished bob—so chic.

I’m all kinds of obsessed with Lily’s fresh blonde chop.

Oluwaseun’s jaw length-bob looks amazing with her balayage.

Switch to a side-parting and add a hair accessory to channel Lucy’s blonde bob.

“As well as face shape, it’s also important to speak to your hairdresser about the right short haircut for your lifestyle,” explained Carly Price, partner at Muse of London. “If you don’t have a lot of time to style your hair, you should opt for something a bit more low-maintenance that will not need to be styled every day with styling tools (or that won’t require as regular trims if you’re always busy and on the go).”

“Texture is another thing to consider when going shorter. If you have fine hair, what works for you may not work for those with thick or curly hair, and it’s important for your hairdresser to find a cut that will work for your hair’s texture,” she added. “Those with curls may find that their curls will go springier and will pop out and not be as loose as they were before being cut.”

Cara Delevingne embracing the bleach-blonde pixie cut.

Shorter than a boba pixie cut is when hair is cut short at the back and sides of the head and tends to be longer on the top. Its most popular incarnation is when a sweeping side fringe is cut into the style, similar to Cara’s, but it also looks amazing with a microfringe. “Pixie cuts can make a round face shape appear rounder,” advised Barton. “I always recommend teaming them with a side fringe to avoid this. Heart-shaped faces suit pixie cuts well and can go pretty short at the back, [while] long face shapes should pair this look with a side-parting or some waves to give the look width and balance or should try adding layers for softness.”

Gabrielle tagged her hair transformation as ‘the big chop’ and her new, shorter length looks so good.

Obsessed with Zoë’s super-short crop and barely-there fringe.

Opting for a swept-over style makes for the perfect evening look.

Jada keeps her hair closely cropped at the sides to let her sun-streaked lengths shine on top.

Kamara has long championed the pixie cut. Though, her fresh, ultra-cropped iteration is perhaps her chicest look to date.

Emilia’s sweeping fringe and warm blonde colour tick all the pixie boxes.

A soft, wispy fringe balances how cropped this cut is at the back.

Keeping her curls short at the back and sides and long on top allows Ellie to create a cool pixie effect.

The feathered fringe and bright blonde lend a ’70s vibe to Zendaya’s pixie cut.

Kim Kardashian West’s ultra-shiny lob is so glossy that you’ll need sunnies to look at it.

Effectively a long bob (hence its name), a lob typically sits just above the shoulders or at shoulder level and is the same length all the way around. A safe bet if you’re thinking about going shorter, the lob looks good on just about everyone. “When Kim Kardashian decided to get her hair cut into a super-sleek lob, this [style] went crazy,” said Price. “In spring, shorter hairstyles become more popular, as clients start to think of hairstyles that will be a bit more low-maintenance for them in the warmer weather and allow them to get rid of excess weight in their hair.”

Keeping things sleek, Selena’s center-parted, polished lob is the stuff that hair dreams are made of.

Ada opts for lob-length braids with cool-girl grey ends.

We love how Dawn gives her sleek bob some throwback appeal with a wide, ’90s-style jersey headband.

Ashley’s side-parting, slick roots, and relaxed waves give her lob a majorly glam vibe.

By keeping her fringe a little shorter at the front, Sade creates a really relaxed, low-maintenance take on the lob.

Could there be a better 2021 hair combo than a tousled lob and a leopard-print bucket hat?

Short hair doesn’t have to be severe. Just curl the ends under like Margot to soften your lob.

Add salt spray to the lengths of your hair to achieve beachy waves just like Marianne’s.

“Short haircuts are great for those who like a low-maintenance look that requires minimal effort and styling,” said Suzie Mcgill, Rainbow Room international artistic director and Schwarzkopf UK ambassador. “You can simply add some texture spray to your hair, such as a salt spray, and you’re good to go. However, you’ll need to be aware that your hair may not be able to fit into a ponytail or a bun. Another thing to consider is your hairdresser.” There’s no scraping up your hair to disguise greasy roots, so you might find that you need to wash your hair more regularly.

Feeling bold? Match the colour of your buzz cut to your lipstick like Keke Palmer.

Traditionally speaking, a buzz cut is definitely the most extreme style of the short-hair world. However, cool girls are taking the plunge in droves, and there’s something about this closely cropped style that looks so chic. “This hairstyle is definitely not one for the faint-hearted and is best suited to those with oval face shapes,” said Barton. “This hairstyle is very cool and edgy, and I love how it’s now more feminine than ever before. More and more women are embracing this statement look.”

Adwoa’s cool-girl buzz cut lets her piercings do the talking.

A soft, fuzzy crop keeps K-Stew’s buzz cut feeling fresh and elegant.

Kate took the short-hair plunge for a film role, but this chocolate-coloured crop looks amazing on her.

Cynthia’s bleach-blonde buzz cut makes for the perfect accompaniment to her trailblazing fashion choices.

Jordan proves that less is more with her buzz cut and beautiful minimal makeup.

Marisa’s minimal style complements her short style perfectly. The pillar-box red lip is the icing on the cake.

Teaming her ‘do with a red lip, Evangeline proves that a short, brunette buzz cut is one of the chicest styles around.

To say Adut looks incredible with a buzz cut would be an understatement. Make like the model and use your short lengths to show off your curated ear jewellery.

Keep your short hair in tip-top condition with these editor-approved products and styling tools.

A light dusting of this not only helps to diminish greasy roots but also gives a big hit of volume.

Nourish dry ends and make bobs seriously sleek with this super-hydrating mask.

Add some depth to your pixie cut with this texturising paste.

It’s likely that your scalp is feeling a little worse for wear with all of the excess styling and general exposure. This treatment helps to reduce flakiness, soothe irritation and reduce greasiness.

Ideal for those with drier hair, this texturising spray contains argan oil to help nourish strands without forgoing refined texture.

This shampoo is ideal for those needing to inject their strands with moisture and shine but who don’t want to add any extra weight.

Keep your scalp in tip-top condition with this exfoliating scrub.

This is one of the very best hair products out there, even if just for the smell alone.

Tame, tidy, or style any frizz or baby hairs with this lightweight formula and brush.

Shorter hair lengths call for more agile heat styling.

5 Pool Workouts to Do When It’s Hotter Than Hell

It’s tempting to view a backyard swimming pool solely as a place to float with a beer in hand (might we suggest one of these stellar summer brews), but even the smallest backyard varieties can provide challenging pool workouts for both serious and recreational swimmers.

A lot of exercises you do on land can be performed in the water. The movements become more challenging because the water resistance—while being less stressful on the joints—puts more force against your body to work against.

Competitive swimmers often turn to dryland training—traditional conditioning and weight room work performed out of the water to complement their swim training. That provides a change of pace and a respite from the water. But for athletes who don’t swim for training purposes, the water can provide similar benefits in terms of breaking the monotony of the gym and complementing traditional strength and cardio training.

Here are five pool workouts perfect for a heat wave.

5 Killer Pool Workouts That Aren’t Just Swimming

Workout No.1

How to do it: Repeat until you reach 20 minutes total for the workout.

A. Knee Hug x 10 each side

How to do it: Standing in chest-deep water, lift your right knee to your chest and grab below your knee with both hands. Pull your right knee as close to your chest as you can as you squeeze your left glute. Return to standing and repeat on the other side, alternating each rep.

B. Lateral Lunge x 10 each side

How to do it: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart. Step out to the right, keeping your toes pointed straight ahead and feet flat. Squat by sitting back and down onto your right leg. Squat as low as possible, keeping your left leg straight and holding the position for two seconds.

C. Wall Kicks x 30 sec.-5 min.

How to do it: These might produce a flashback to childhood swim lessons, Grab the gutter or wall with both hands, your body flat against the surface of the water. Begin with 30 seconds of moderate kicking. Be sure to point your toes and flex the ankles. The kick should be at the surface of the water. Alternate between 30 seconds of moderate kicking and 30 seconds of sprinting, building up to 5 minutes. For a greater challenge, place your face in the water for 10-second intervals.

D. Bobs x 20 or as many reps as possible in 1 minute

How to do it: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart in the shallow end (water should be 3- to 4-feet deep). The taller you are, the deeper you’ll need to wade. Lower your hips back and down until your thighs are parallel to the bottom of the pool—back straight, core engaged. Jump, exploding from the ankles and quads. Land in the starting position. This is the same mechanics as a squat jump on land.

E. Pool Pushups

How to do it: Stand facing the edge of the pool with your hands on the wall with hands shoulder-width apart. The water should be deep enough that your feet are not touching the ground. If you’re in a shallow pool, bend your knees so you’re not touching. Push off the wall and ascend vertically out of the pool for a set of 20 or as many reps as possible in one minute.

Submerge to cool off for a 30-second break.
