Apple releases iOS 13.5.1, patching out the Unc0ver jailbreak

Apple has released iOS 13.5.1 today, which the company says “provides important security updates and is recommended for all users,” albeit without much detail in the change log. But as noted by Twitter account Apple Software Updates, the update is meant to patch out the kernel vulnerability used by the recent Unc0ver jailbreak.

Apple’s support page lays things out more clearly — the update was designed to prevent an application from being able to “execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges.” In other words, iOS 13.5.1 is designed to block jailbreaking.

The Unc0ver jailbreak was particularly notable in the iOS jailbreaking community because it was available on the then-current iOS 13.5, allowing users of the latest…

Plate Approach Guru: Alex Bregman, the Late First-Round Fantasy Game-Changer

The Houston Astros scandal may scare fantasy owners away, but SI Fantasy analyst Shawn Childs believes Alex Bregman is ready for a repeat of his 2019 campaign

All controversy aside in Houston, Astros third baseman Alex Bregman is a top-notch fantasy option. Surrounded by good bats in the batting order, there is big-time four-category production in his game with speed upside. Some may wonder how many at-bats did he benefit from during the cheating scandal, but his patience at the plate and other auxiliary stats showcased below still firmly separate Bregman from the rest of the pack.

Bregman continued pushing upward to the elite tier of players in Major League Baseball in 2019. His plate approach is one of the absolute best in baseball, highlighted by his elite walk rate (17.3) and sliding strikeout rate (12.0). He displayed development in his average hit rate (2.000) and a bounce-back in contact batting average (.344). Bregman set career-highs in runs (122), home runs (41), and RBI (112) and also led the league in walks (119).

His only drawback was a decrease in steals (5). Bregman’s hard-hit rate (37.5) came in at 219th so there’s room for growth here. He did have improvement in his HR/FB rate (18.6). His swing path delivers a lot of fly balls (45.9 percent – 43.1 in his career).

Last year, he dominated left-handed pitching (.350 with 16 HRs and 38 RBI over 163 at-bats) with his best results after the All-Star break (.338 with 61 runs, 18 HRs, and 56 RBI over 237 at-bats). Bregman has become an excellent middle-of-the order bat in Houston and he can produce 250 combined runs and RBI in 2020.

Bregman is young enough that we could see a turnaround in his speed, all while having the elite approach at the plate to push for a batting title. His average draft position is around 11th overall in most drafts in 2020 while gaining an extra notch of value from me due to his shortstop qualification.

Look for him to post .310 with 125 runs, 35 home runs, 125 RBI, and 10 steals. In 2019, he ranked as the ninth best hitter in SIscores and your expectations should be similar for 2020.

Apple doubles the price for entry-level MacBook Pro RAM upgrade

Apple has doubled the price to upgrade the RAM on the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro, as spotted by MacRumors. The upgrade now costs $200 to move from 8GB to 16GB of RAM; previously, you could upgrade the RAM for $100.

The price increase is actually a price correction, Apple tells The Verge. The price to upgrade RAM from 8GB to 16GB is $200 on other Macs, including the iMac and MacBook Air, and this change is meant to keep the fee consistent. Apple says it will honor the earlier pricing for those who purchased the cheaper RAM upgrade before the price change went into effect.

The pricier upgrade may be a tough sell. The entry-level MacBook Pro uses older LPDDR3 memory, rather than the newer LPDDR4X memory used in other Macs, like the M…

Police violence will make it harder to fight COVID-19

Law enforcement’s brutal response to this weekend’s protests may fuel mistrust in the health care system as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to smolder through the country.

Experts say the danger is especially acute in black communities, which have already been hit hard by the virus, and have historically borne the brunt of discriminatory policing. In the aftermath of the police response to protests, vulnerable communities may be even less likely to trust and cooperate with health officials. That could make it harder to control another wave of illness.

“This blatant display reminds folks how bad the devaluing of black lives is, at the height of a global pandemic, and it’s certainly going to lead to less willingness to engage in the…

Report: Former Laker Brian Shaw Agrees to Coach G League Elite Pro Team

The new G League elite pro team is set to launch next season in Los Angeles.

Former Lakers guard Brian Shaw has agreed to become the head coach of the G League elite pro team, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

The new G League team, which is set to launch next season in Los Angeles, will be headlined by Sports Illustrated All-American Player of the Year Jalen Green and five-star prospect Isaiah Todd. The team will not be affiliated with an NBA franchise and is part of the NBA’s professional pathway program, a G League initiative that will pay elite prospects and provide a one-year development program separate from the league’s prior makeup.

Shaw joins the G League after playing in the NBA for 14 seasons and coaching for 13. The former guard played for the Celtics and Magic, among other teams, early in his career before later reuniting with his former Orlando teammate Shaquille O’Neal in Los Angeles.

During four seasons with the Lakers, Shaw won three championships and later moved into an assistant coaching job with the franchise after retiring. He served in the role for eight years before the Nuggets hired him as head coach in June 2013. Denver compiled a 56–85 record in two seasons under Shaw before the team fired him in 2015.

He returned to the Lakers as an associate head coach from 2016-19 and worked with coach Luke Walton to develop the team’s young players like Kyle Kuzma, Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram.

New biosensor visualizes stress in living plant cells in real time

Plant biologists have developed a new nanosensor that monitors foundational mechanisms related to stress and drought. The new biosensor allows researchers to analyze changes in real time as they happen involving kinases, enzymes that catalyze key biological activities in proteins. Certain kinases are essential since they are known to be activated in response to drought conditions, triggering the protective closure of small pores on leaf surfaces known as stoma.
