The “Ugly” Shoe Trend You Love to Hate Will Pick Up Steam in 2020

As the fashion crowd continues to give the side-eye to antiquated fashion rules, “ugly” trends continue to blossom. These days, it’s really about wearing what makes you feel comfortable (which may include testing out those “uncool but actually so cool” looks) rather than succumbing to the conventional ideology of what’s “flattering.” And while we recently highlighted a range of the more ironic trends that style setters are gravitating towards, we thought we’d take a deeper dive into one of the more polarizing shoe styles that just so happens to be one 2020’s top “ugly” trends.

Get ready, because functional sandals (you know the kind—those clunkier, two-strap silhouettes) are bound to pick up steam even more over the next year. That’s right—while they’ve been hovering around in the market for a while, designers from 3.1 Phillip Lim to Zimmermann proved that the ironic, more unconventional shoe trend has longevity after showcasing them in their S/S 2020 collections.

So whether you’ve loved or loathed the trend in the past, it’s one that could be worth testing out now given the comfortable and fashion-forward nature worn with socks or on their own come spring and summer.

If you’re on board (or have been for a while and want to refresh your offering), wonderful—there’s a range of fresh shopping picks below. And if you need a little extra push with some more inspiration, we rounded up how celeb and fashion girls have been wearing the cool trend over the last year, as well as how designers interpreted the silhouette on the spring runways.

Style Tip: Wool socks and two-strap sandals paired with sleek trousers and a fuzzy sweater is one of those unexpected yet incredibly forward looks right now. On Kendall Jenner: Adidas trousers; Balenciaga sunglasses

Style Tip: While just about any shoe style would work with this black button-down dress, the unconventional sandal choice is particularly cool. On Gigi Hadid: Sandro dress; Birkenstock Sandals ($225)

Style Tip: Test out this formula containing a T-shirt, cropped jeans, and sandals when the temperatures start to warm up. You can get the same vibe by adding in an oversized sweatshirt and cozy socks for right now. On Elsa Hosk: Acne Studios tee; Eb Denim Jeans ($337); Birkenstock x Rick Owens Arizona Sandals ($252)

Style Tip: Keep it comfortable with socks and sandals, joggers, and a puffer coat. On Kourtney Kardashian: Yeezy sweatpants;  Birkenstock x Rick Owens Arizona Sandals ($252)

Style Tip: Socks and sandals are cool for the season with cropped jeans, a crew-neck sweater, and a moto jacket.

Style Tip: Patterned two-strap sandals bring a laid-back feeling to an elegant dressed-up vibe.

Style Tip: Go for the unexpected by wearing a pair of functional sandals with modern tailoring.

Style Tip: The contrast between black sandals and a monochromatic white outfit feels so right.

The patent orange sandals at Altuzarra pop against the gorgeous red skirt and top look.

Functional sandals with extra hardware—like these from the Sacai show—bring a little extra edge to an ensemble.

These 3.1 Phillip Lim black flat sandals feel even cooler with the coordinating loose leather pants.

Zimmermann’s gold sandals will take any outfit—including this pretty shorts ensemble—to the next level.

Imagine these with white socks. Quite cool.

The chunky sole and strap in the back brings an extra level of comfort.

The snakeskin print gives these such a fancy feel.

Yes, these are as cozy as they look.

The silver metal hardware and contrasting white straps feel so current.

Love the chunky sole on these sandals.

Punch up your outfit with these metallic slides.

The fuzzy upper detail gives these sandals that much-desired comfortable element.

Spot on and so sophisticated.

If you’re looking for a high-end pair of strap sandals, consider these Western-inspired stunners.

These would actually work with a pair of wool socks as well.

Make a statement in these sandals with the contrasting hues.

The studs bring a downtown-feel to these black sandals.

Here’s How to Look Rich With Little Effort and a Small Budget

While spending a lot on clothes can sometimes translate to great outfits, it’s not always the case. In fact, some of the best dressed people I know are truly masters of mixing high and low fashion and don’t need to rely on expensive designer pieces to put together polished looks. So what is the secret behind their expensive-looking outfits? Yes, they all have impeccable taste and a great eye for fashion, but more than that, they stick to some key tricks that elevate their style.

Ahead, I’m highlighting some of the easiest ways to make your outfits look more expensive without emptying your bank account. Read our five tips for how to dress rich, even if you’re on a budget, and shop our edit of under-$200 pieces that will transform your looks.

Bourgeoisie fashion is making a resurgence after it was spotted on the F/W 19 runways everywhere from Celine and Louis Vuitton to Dior and Max Mara. Rather than It items and trend-driven fashion, it’s rooted in classic pieces like heritage prints, leather boots, and tailored blazers that will continue to look stylish beyond just one season.

If you gravitate toward bold colors, tonal dressing is the polished way to pull them off. Sticking to an outfit that incorporates multiple shades of the same color results in a pulled-together look that portrays confidence—and looks expensive.

Clothing finished in luxe fabrics like tweed, satin, or vegan leather instantly looks expensive, even if it’s not actually putting a huge dent in your wallet.

While skins like snakeskin, crocodile, and lizard are wildly expensive, there are faux versions that read just as luxe.

When it comes to jewelry, yellow gold always looks like it costs the most money, as opposed to rose gold or silver. How to wear it? Right now, wear chunky jewelry, which is poised to be one of the biggest accessory trends for the season ahead, and it instantly looks expensive.

The 6 Most Popular Accessory Trends of 2019 (and 6 That Will Replace Them)

The start of a new decade is always exciting, but before we dive headfirst into 2020 and all the pending fashion moments it holds, let’s take a look back at some of the biggest trends from last year. Today, we’re chatting solely about accessories—everything from handbags to shoes. Last year was filled with some pretty iconic trends, but according to the S/S 20 runways, everything that’s in store is about to trump all the trends you thought you weren’t tired of.

Now, the 2019 trends listed ahead are not “out” by any means. So if you’re still rocking floss heels and bucket hats, godspeed. This story is not to shame any one trend or person, but it is here to show you the shiny new 2020 version of your favorite pieces. Trends are cyclical, repeating themselves at a rapid rate, so comparing the new to the old for you here will hopefully get you excited for the upcoming accessory assortment that will soon be gracing your closets.

Barely there strappy sandals, or “floss heels” as we like to call them, were the talk of the town all last year. This shoe trend is a part of the evolution of the naked shoe movement, and up next in 2020, floss heels will get a slight update thanks to the rise of the T-strap sandal. This new take on the trend feels fresh enough to get people talking while being just as wearable as the floss heels we all know and love.

Logo bags aren’t going out of style by any means, but while 2019 was all about the Dior Saddle and the Fendi Baguette, 2020 will be about new takes on those returning classics. In particular, the ’90s shoulder bag made quite a statement on the spring runways featuring exciting new details like chain straps, crazy prints, and everything in between. So this year, instead of feeling like you have to stick to a label, buy what you like so long as it fits comfortably right in your armpit.

I don’t know about you, but I am more than ready to put away the bucket hat for the unforeseeable future. Replacing the ’90s grunge-inspired topper will be baseball hats. These hats have no frills and no fuss. Instead, they were used on the runway to juxtapose whatever was going on beneath the hat like a strappy bra situation or a sleek tailored coat.

Don’t fret—mini bags are still socially acceptable because everything is cuter when it’s tiny, but the spring 2020 collections showed us that the big bag trend is still on the rise. Side-slung massive carryalls, in particular, were spotted all throughout fashion month and are just the exciting take on the trend we were looking for.

The decline of microscopic sunglasses has been inevitable for some time now, and while shoppers might be initially intimidated by larger frames as their replacement, the shift is happening. Brands like Gucci and Fendi made quite the case for those grandma-inspired sunglasses, and sooner or later, everyone’s going to fall for them. You’ll see.

You might not believe what you’re about to read, but gladiator sandals have officially returned. Replacing the hyper-saturated trend that was sporty sandals, specifically the Teva-inspired ones, will be the more toned-down sandal fit to accompany any spring and summer ensemble of your choosing.

7 Emerging Designers That Will Define the 2020 Red Carpet Circuit

Just like that, award season is upon us. On Sunday, we kicked off the 2020 red carpet circuit with the Golden Globe Awards, and the celebs in attendance did not come to play. Seriously, their looks were even more striking than we thought possible, which begs the question, if the first major award show already outdid our expectations, then what else does Hollywood have up its sleeve this year?

While we don’t have a crystal ball to predict exactly what we’ll see celebs wearing to the upcoming award shows, we do have the intel on some of the fresh talents who are busy designing the next internet-breaking ensembles. These are the emerging red carpet fashion designers who we predict will have the most influence on red carpets everywhere in 2020 based on their fan bases and stunning designs. From Markarian’s baroque-style gowns favored by Emma Roberts and Laura Dern to Christopher John Rogers’s colorful creations backed by Tracee Ellis Ross, Lizzo, and Michelle Obama, we’re placing bets on who will be behind the most important red carpet moments of the year to come.

Ahead, discover each designer, and see how celebs are already wearing their creations.

Mark my words: This is already Christopher John Rogers‘s year. The 2019 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner, Rogers creates frothy, saturated, dreamy concoctions that are already beloved by a stacked crew of the most important people in fashion right now: Rihanna, Michelle Obama, Tracee Ellis Ross, Lizzo, Lil Nas X—I could go on. Rogers is the definition of a rising star, and given that this is only the beginning for his brand, we can only imagine legendary things are in store for him.

David Koma’s creations are at once risqué and incredibly tasteful, a balance that very few designers manage to pull off. The restrained silhouettes recall the minimalist vibe of the ’90s, and seeing as the decade’s theme is as strong as ever in fashion right now, we won’t be surprised to see more of Koma’s gowns on the Hollywood set this year.

WHO: Rosie Huntington-WhiteleyWEAR: David Koma Crystal Chain-Trimmed Stretch-Crepe Gown ($1910); Tyler Ellis Perry Swarovski Fine Crystal Mesh Clutch; Jessica McCormack Space Odyssey Ring and Moonshine Long Diamond Earrings; René Caovilla Snake-Wrap Satin Sandals

WHO: Joan SmallsWEAR: David Koma Grosgrain-Trimmed Tulle and Cady Gown ($1620)

Markarian celebrates all things baroque, favoring details like corset bodices, puff sleeves, and romantic bows. Among its vast (and we mean vast) celebrity fan base are names like Emma Roberts and Laura Dern, so we only expect to see more of its dresses appear across Hollywood this year.

For a certain set of celebs, only the most over-the-top creations will suffice for a (hopefully) much-talked-about red carpet appearance. When you’re J.Lo or a member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan and you want to make a splash, there’s a good chance you’ll end up in one of Richard Quinn’s fantastical numbers. The British designer has made OTT florals and exaggerated silhouettes his signature, and statement-seeking celebs are flocking to them.

Khaite has earned a place in every fashion editor’s heart for its beautifully romantic designs and It pieces. But apart from the runway (and Katie Holmes’s closet), the label is about to earn the title of red carpet designer now, too. In fact, just last week, Abigail Spencer wore one of its tulle gowns to the Golden Globe’s after-party, a telltale sign of Khaite’s red carpet–worthy status.

When Bella Hadid stepped onto the red carpet for the MTV Video Music Awards, she wore a ruched skirt–and–crop top invention held together by suspenders from emerging London designer Charlotte Knowles. Hadid’s look was a huge stamp of approval for the young designer and instantly put her lingerie-inspired designs on the map.

When Candice Swanepoel wore one of Christopher Esber’s ab-displaying dresses this fall, the image made the rounds on the internet’s style-savviest circles. Then, Zendaya’s crystal-embellished gown followed suit at the People’s Choice Awards, and voilà—the fashion world became fixated on the Australian designer.

I’m a Homebody—These Are the Loungewear Pieces I Swear By

Even in my wildest party days (circa 2010 when this headline probably would have read “I’m a Party Girl—These Are the Going-Out Pieces I Swear By”), I’ve really always been a homebody at heart. I am the type of girl who relishes in all things cozy. I’d take a night in watching The Crown curled up on my sofa any day of the week. I revel in plush pillows, pine-scented candles, a roaring fire, shearling blankets, a smorgasbord of books, and hot cups of tea in the comfort of my abode. And after having a baby last year, I’ve reached a whole new level of feeling connected and grounded to my home. Nesting has been my favorite sport.

So since my middle name is basically hygge, I’d say I’m pretty well versed in the art of dressing at home. Sure, sometimes an oversize tee and baggy pajama pants are an easy option, but I’m particularly partial to loungewear (matching sets are my favorite) that is not only seriously soft and cozy against my skin but also looks beautiful (because you never know when an Insta moment will arise).

So if you’re a fellow homebody like I am or simply want to get in the cozy winter spirit, then scroll below as I share some of my favorite loungewear pieces I swear by. (They also happen to make great holiday gifts, FYI!). Time to put the kettle on.

Naked Cashmere’s pieces are the ultimate in luxurious comfort. The Kaia sweater and matching Uri pants are my go-to for a chill yet chic outfit when I have friends over for brunch or tea. They’re made from 100% cashmere and are sumptuously soft to the touch. Oh, and did I mention they’re loved by celebs? (Recently spotted on Gigi Hadid and Demi Moore.)

I’ve always been a huge fan of Eberjey’s soft and comfy pj’s, and just when I thought things couldn’t get cozier around here, the brand released some seriously soft loungewear pieces that I guarantee you’ll never want to take off. This super-soft brushed-jersey matching set (aptly named Cozy Time) is one of my favorites for lounging about with the baby on the weekend. It also comes in a cool charcoal gray.

Lou & Grey’s signature soft sweats are not only perfect for a Sunday binge-watching sesh, but they’re also ideal for wearing out and about. They’re wonderfully warm and comfortable, making them a great option for traveling, casual winter activities, and running to get your morning coffee. They come in four versatile colors, but I’m a huge fan of the rich burgundy hue.

Shop the matching Super Plush Hoodie ($89).

There aren’t enough luscious adjectives to describe the deliciousness of Skin’s loungewear. It’s always on my birthday and holiday wish lists because the brand’s pieces are simply divine. They exude a relaxed sophistication that will elevate your loungewear game for good. The cotton-knit separates are some of my favorites.

I love a good waffle knit, and the Flora Nikrooz Bella Waffle Short and Hoodie set is the absolute cutest of them all! Perfect for a chill date night at home and great for sleeping in, too.

One of my favorite new brands on heavy rotation in my weekend wardrobe is Lett. I love its luxurious, stretchy, and expensive-feeling fabrics. They look super chic too—easy to wear out and about. As the brand’s site says, its pieces are “intended for layovers and lunch dates, without ever making you choose between comfort or style.” I love the wide-leg pants (with pockets—hurrah!), and I’ll usually pair some of the tops with comfy leggings.

You might have spotted this cozy sweatsuit all over your feed recently. That’s because influencers everywhere have been praising its coziness this winter. And I’ve certainly been quick to catch on. It’s warm, classic, and super easy to wear—perfect for those crisp early mornings pottering around the house. Moreover, it comes in a plethora of cool colors.

I’m a sucker for a great mommy-and-me matching set, and Saint Haven delivers in every soft, soothing, and snug way. Created by Jacqueline Sacks, a mom whose mission was to design clothing that soothes even the most sensitive skin, the collection of silky-soft loungewear pieces are ridiculously comfortable and wonderfully gentle-feeling against the skin. These pieces are hypoallergenic, breathable, and lightweight enough to sleep in.

Shop the matching Second Skin Leggings ($88).

Shop the matching All Day Jogger ($55).

You probably know Cosabella for its seriously soft underwear and bras, but it also carries an amazing range of sleepwear and loungewear that was practically made for the art of relaxation. This striped matching set has an ultra-wearable slouchy silhouette that’s made of soft cotton and modal. Perfect for watching movies or getting some z’s.

I always get tons of compliments when I wear this heather-gray rib-knit pullover and matching pants—perhaps because it’s so striking in its simplicity. Moreover, it looks way more expensive than its price tag. I predict this one will sell out fast because it’s such great value.

I basically lived in easy Monrow sweatpants and comfortable Everlane tees on my maternity leave. They were perfect for lounging with the baby or popping out for walks yet still looked nice enough to greet visitors. I want them in every color!
