Joe Burrow Sets NCAA Single-Season Touchdown Record in National Championship

Burrow’s 64th touchdown passed former Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan for the FBS single-season record.

LSU quarterback Joe Burrow continued to make history in the College Football Playoff national championship on Monday, setting the FBS single-season record with 64 touchdowns.

Burrow’s record-setting score came on a 4-yard toss to tight end Thaddeus Moss in the third quarter. It was Burrow’s fourth touchdown pass and fifth total of the night at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans as LSU seized a 35-25 lead.

Former Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan previously held the single-season record. He scored 63 touchdowns in 2006.

Burrow won the Heisman Trophy on Dec. 14 after throwing for 5,208 passing yards in the regular season. The junior is LSU’s first Heisman Trophy winner since Billy Cannon in 1959.

LSU enters Monday night seeking the program’s first national championship since 2007. Trevor Lawrence and Clemson defeated Alabama for the national title in January 2019.

Clemson WR Tee Higgins Torches LSU on 36-Yard Reverse Touchdown

Higgins received a block from Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence en route to the Tigers’ second touchdown of the night.

Clemson wide receiver Tee Higgins scored his first career rushing touchdown in impressive fashion on Monday, scoring from 36 yards out on a reverse in the College Football Playoff national championship.

Higgins’ 36-yard dash was Clemson’s second touchdown of the night at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. Clemson took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Lawrence had a hand in Higgins’ touchdown run. The sophomore quarterback set a block before Higgins hit the edge, eliminating one defender as Clemson’s wide receiver sprinted to the end zone.

Higgins has made a significant contribution in the passing game this season. The junior caught 55 passes for 1,115 touchdowns in 2019, leading Clemson with 13 touchdowns. Higgins now has 26 touchdowns in his last 30 games with the Tigers.

LSU quickly answered Higgins’ score on Monday. Quarterback Joe Burrow hit wideout Ja’Marr Chase for 56 yards, then ran in the touchdown from 3 yards out.
