I’m 54, and These Are the Trends I Will and Won’t Wear
Melissa Meyers is a Los Angeles–based influencer with a focus on beauty, style, travel, and wellness. Her blog, The Glow Girl, aims to empower women to embrace the best version of themselves, age gracefully, and cultivate a glow from the inside out. She also happens to be 54 years old and has a penchant for masterfully styling trends. Below, hear from Meyers on her favorite pieces for the season.
Before moving to Los Angeles and launching my blog, The Glow Girl, I lived in New York City where I was the founding editor of an online fashion and lifestyle magazine. A large part of my job was to be on the hunt for the latest style and fashion trends and to share them with my audience. Experimenting with these trends and seeing so many come and go over the years has helped me develop a distinct style guide. I realize now that it’s important to only wear the trends that work for your style, body type, and taste. As a woman in my mid-50s, it feels good to adopt the trends that make me feel confident when walking out the door and to ignore flash-in-the-pan trends that don’t. Check out the trends I will and will not wear below.
I see mixing these two styles together as a passing trend. Keep the biker leggings for workouts only if you need to wear them. I am not a fan, as they cut off the thigh in a place that can make my legs look shorter.
These “ugly,” dad-style sneakers certainly made a comeback from the ’90s, but I won’t be wearing them anytime soon. They can look unsophisticated and do nothing to help elongate the leg. I recently purchased a pair of Nike Cortez sneakers that capture the trend and are flattering.
An alternative to these tops is to wear one that is cropped right where the waist of your pants hits. I wear these tops with high-waisted jeans and sometimes even show just a sliver of skin.
These sunglasses are disproportionate to any adult face and can look silly. Plus, they offer very little sun protection for the eyes. I like sticking to classic aviators, cat-eye, and oversize sunnies.
This trend is a flashback to the ’90s and was super popular at the S/S 19 fashion shows, but to me, it just looks tacky. If you want to capture this trend, I suggest wearing an accessory like a neon belt or shoes—or just try an electric-colored mani for less of a commitment.

Report: Former Browns, Raiders HC Hue Jackson ‘Strong Candidate’ for ASU Offensive Coordinator
Hue Jackson has reportedly emerged as a “strong candidate” for Arizona State’s offensive coordinator position.
Arizona State football already has decades of NFL experience on its coaching staff as Herm Edwards is the school’s head coach and Marvin Lewis is a special advisor to the program.
But the school could be adding another experienced coach to its staff in the near future as The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman is reporting that former Browns and Raiders head coach Hue Jackson has emerged as a “strong candidate” for the ASU offensive coordinator vacancy.
Jackson did not coach in 2019 after being fired from the Browns in the middle of the 2018 season. However, he was set to help run Colin Kaepernick’s recent workout in Atlanta before the workout changed locations.
The former NFL head coach was at Arizona State at the beginning of his coaching career, where he served as both the running backs coach and quarterbacks coach between 1992–95. He’s known Edwards for decades and worked alongside Lewis multiple times while Lewis was with the Bengals.
Edwards told reporters Sunday that he will not retain offensive coordinator Rob Likens, tight end coach Donnie Yantis and wire receivers coach Charlie Fisher.

Tom Herman Shakes Up Texas Staff After Disappointing 7–5 Season
Texas coach Tom Herman fired defensive coordinator Todd Orlando and demoted offensive coordinator Tim Beck after the Longhorns struggled to a disappointing 7-5 record.
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas coach Tom Herman shook up his staff Sunday, firing defensive coordinator Todd Orlando and demoting offensive coordinator Tim Beck after the Longhorns struggled to a disappointing 7-5 record in a season they were expected to contend for the Big 12 championship.
The Longhorns began the season ranked in the Top 10 but are now unranked as they await their bowl destination after losing three of their last five games.
Also dismissed was wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator Drew Mehringer. Inside receivers coach Corby Meekins will no longer coach but will stay in the program in an administrative role.
Beck will stay on as quarterbacks coach through the bowl game, but his status beyond that was unclear.
Herman said he was “very disappointed” in the season and said that 7-5 “will never be our standard at Texas.”
“I take full responsibility for any and all of our shortcomings and know we need to do a better job coaching across the board,” Herman said. “With that said, I do believe the future is very bright.”
Staff changes were expected. Herman said last week the program was in “full evaluation” mode and signaled several assistants could be let go.
“These were very difficult decisions and certainly not an indictment of them as coaches,” Herman said. “I just believe we need a fresh set of eyes and infusion of new ideas and energy to help us grow across the board.”
Much was expected of Texas this season after a 10-4 finish in 2018 that included a dominant victory over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.
Texas started 4-1 with its only defeat a 42-38 home loss to No. 1 LSU. But the defense struggled early and was badly exposed against LSU and in losses to Oklahoma and TCU. The Longhorns also barely escaped a major upset with a 50-48 win over Kansas.
The defense improved late in the season, but the unit still ranked among the worst in the country and routinely gave up big plays in late-game situations.
That was the reverse of what happened with the offense. The Longhorns ranked among the best offenses in the country over the first seven games, but didn’t score more than 27 points over a four-game stretch that killed Texas’ Big 12 title hopes.
Orlando came with Herman from the University of Houston in 2016 and was one of the highest-paid assistant coaches in the country. He still has another year on a guaranteed contract that pays him more than $1.7 million annually.
Co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Craig Naviar will be the interim coordinator.
Ole Miss Fires Head Coach Matt Luke Following 4–8 Season
Ole Miss has fired head coach Matt Luke after a disappointing 4-8 season.
Ole Miss has fired head coach Matt Luke, the school announced Sunday night.
Luke took over for Hugh Freeze in 2017 after Freeze was forced to resign, and finished just 6–6 in his first season before being named permanent head coach.
In his ensuing two seasons in Oxford, Luke won only nine combined games, finishing 5-7 in 2018 and 4-8 in 2019.
“After evaluating the overall trajectory of our football program, we did not see enough momentum on the field and determined a change is necessary in order for our student-athletes to compete at the highest level,” Ole Miss Athletics Director Carter said in a statement. “While improvements were evident in certain aspects of the program, we are judged ultimately by our record, and, unfortunately, we did not meet the standard of success that we expect from our program.”
Luke’s final loss with the Rebels might have been one of his most embarrassing. Last Thursday against Mississippi State, wide receiver Elijah Moore caught a touchdown with four seconds remaining, but received a personal foul penalty for miming a dog peeing in the end zone. The act backed up ensuing extra point attempt which kicker Luke Logan missed, resulting in a 21–20 loss.
The school later apologized calling it, “disappointing and unacceptable,” but the Egg Bowl defeat would prove to mark the end of Luke’s tenure.
Luke played center at Ole Miss from 1995-98 and was an assistant coach for the school throughout various points of his coaching career.
His firing means that there are now three openings among the 14 teams in the SEC.
Early Week 14 Fantasy Football Waiver Wire
Here’s an early look at a few players worth grabbing off the waiver wire heading into Week 14.
Be on the lookout for a full waiver-wire column from the SI Fantasy team each week. Every Sunday night, however, I will take an early look at a few options that could help you in the upcoming week or on a rest-of-season basis.
[Note: All players referenced in this post are available in more than half of Yahoo! leagues as their ownership levels are all below 50 percent. All references are based on half-PPR scoring.]
Here are a few waiver-wire options to consider heading into Week 14 (Yahoo! ownership in parenthesis):
James Washington, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers (22% owned)
With JuJu Smith-Schuster sidelined another week, James Washington turned in another productive performance with his first-ever 100-yard outing. Washington converted all four of his targets into a 4/111/1 line against the Browns on Sunday.
The second-year receiver now has at least 90 yards and a touchdown in three of his past four games. Over his past five games, Washington has a minimum of three catches and 49 yards every week while compiling an impressive 20/417/3 line—83.4 YPG and 20.85 Y/R—during that stretch.
Perhaps Smith-Schuster returns in Week 14, but the Steelers get a plus-matchup against the Cardinals next week. Especially if Smith-Schuster is out again, Washington will be ranked as a top-36 (WR3) option in next week’s rankings.
Benny Snell Jr., RB, Pittsburgh Steelers (34% owned)
In Sunday’s win over the Browns, Benny Snell Jr. carried the ball 16 times for 63 yards and a touchdown. Over his past two games, the fourth-round rookie has 37 carries for 161 yards and a touchdown while adding a couple of receptions for nine yards as well.
As noted above, the Steelers get a plus-fantasy matchup against the Cardinals in Week 14. The Cardinals entered the week allowing the 10th-most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season. If James Conner (shoulder) isn’t cleared to return next week, Snell should garner usage in the range of 15 to 20 touches.
Derrius Guice, RB, Washington Redskins (50% owned)
Once again, it was a roughly even split in workload for Washington’s running backs—Adrian Peterson’s 13 touches to Derrius Guice’s 12 on Sunday. Both backs capitalized on their favorable matchup against the Panthers and get another plus-matchup next week (Packers). Both teams entered the week as a top-four matchup for opposing running backs.
Guice carried the ball 10 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday and added two catches for eight yards. The 2018 second-round pick now has back-to-back games with double-digit carries. Game script could be a challenge for Guice (and Peterson) next week against the Packers, but Guice is more involved than Peterson as a receiver.
Anthony Miller, WR, Chicago Bears (14% owned)
Outside of Allen Robinson, it’s difficult to trust any part of Chicago’s passing offense, but Anthony Miller may be worth a long look. Against the Lions on Thanksgiving, Miller hauled in nine receptions for 140 yards on 13 targets, all season highs. While he had a season-best performance in Week 13, he has been productive and heavily-involved for several games now.
The second-year, second-round receiver now has at least six catches and 54 yards in three consecutive games. Over the past three weeks (through Sunday’s 4 p.m. games), only D.J. Moore and Christian McCaffrey (36 each) have more targets than Miller (33), who has a 26.62% team target share over that stretch.
Kevin Hanson joins SI for the 2019 season. His fantasy rankings have placed him in the Top 20 in each of the past two seasons among all the industry experts tracked by FantasyPros.com, and he has been in the Top 25 in six of the past eight years.
