Deducing the scale of tsunamis from the ’roundness’ of deposited gravel

Scientists have found a link between the ’roundness’ distribution of tsunami deposits and how far tsunamis reach inland. They sampled the ’roundness’ of gravel from different tsunamis in Koyadori, Japan, and found a common, abrupt change in composition approximately 40% of the ‘inundation distance’ from the shoreline, regardless of tsunami magnitude. Estimates of ancient tsunami size from geological deposits may help inform effective disaster mitigation.

A Park Slope Stoop Horror Story

Rachel Lindsay illustrates a story about a Brooklyn brownstone-dwelling couple’s worst nightmare: having lowbrow books, like “Fifty Shades of Grey” and “The Notebook,” left in front of their stoop.

Garlic Butter Shrimp and Grits - Speedy comfort food at its best! Perfectly garlicky, buttery shrimp cooked so so quickly, served with the creamiest grits!

This is my new favorite speedy meal. And I know, it looks super fancy and super impressive and maybe even somewhat intimidating, but it’s legit the quickest weeknight meal you can whip up during those busy weeknights.

First you’ll need some quick cooking grits, except we’re going to doctor it up a bit using chicken stock and milk, adding a little more flavor and creaminess here.

Then you’ll need some shrimp, a ton of butter, garlic, lemon, paprika, thyme and some white wine (but you can substitute chicken stock if you need a non-alcoholic substitute). This cooks super super fast so be sure to keep a close eye on it.

From there, you can top off your creamy grits with the most garlicky, buttery, lemnony shrimp with all the saucy bits. So quick and so so good, letting those grits sop up all that leftover sauce!

6 Items I’ll Never Get Rid of Because They’ll Always Stay in Style

I recently hit the seventh year mark since I joined Instagram, a wild thing to think about. What began as an innocent photo-sharing app has become an essential resource for my career, but also an unintentional photo album commemorating all of the moments I’ve chosen to share. I recently decided to take a stroll down memory lane via my profile. In tandem with cringing over my choice of photo filters (I was regrettably a consistent fan of Nashville), I noticed there were a few items of clothing that have made cameos in my feed year after year.

I don’t need to remind you how easy it is to get swept up in the short lifecycle of trends. Zara pieces have come and, quickly, gone, but there are some closet staples I own that have transcended my ever-evolving approach to style. They’ll be rejoiced to know I have no intentions of shipping them off to a resale site anytime soon. While these classic items are far from groundbreaking, together, they make up a useful list to consider when working on creating a well-rounded closet. Ahead, check out the six items I recommend you hold onto.

I don’t know how I ever once thought cardigans were best left to my grandmother. Since getting this fitted Aritzia cardi over a year ago, I’ve worn it down to its last thread. It’s one of those pieces I find a way to wear every season; as a light layer in fall, worn over a plain black turtleneck in the winter, with nothing but a bralette come spring and summer. Luckily the cardigan is still available to purchase prompting me to buy another two as backups for when this one inevitably unravels from wear.

I’ve waxed poetic about my love for Vans for years. While my (shamefully) massive collection includes a range of the brand’s Sk8-His, Old Skools, and more, it’s the Authentic sneakers that magically pair well with everything in my closet.

I own a legion of cropped denim jackets, but the vintage one shown here has been with me since 2011, and I don’t plan on tossing it any time soon. To make sure your denim jacket will still look good in the years to come, choose a classic fitted or cropped fit and avoid any trendy frills like colored denim, acid wash, added hardware, etc.

I’m pretty sure I picked up this H&M Studio coat three years ago, which, at the time, was a major splurge. Coming in around $200, it felt like an investment piece. But if we’re playing the cost-per-wear game, it probably comes out to pennies. This coat has been my go-to piece of outerwear every fall through spring, has seen plenty of travels abroad, and has been worth every repair I’ve subsequently paid tailors for.

This yellow dress was also a vintage find, but it’s a silhouette I’ve been hoarding ever since. Now my summer wardrobe consists of a rainbow assortment of short-sleeved column dresses. Where some dress shapes come and go—I can’t look at a skater dress without being warped back to 2009—this more simplistic cut transcends the seasons.

Chain belts, slider belts, sequin belts, D-ring belts—I’ve been through them all. The sole belt that’s made it through many rounds of Marie Kondo–esque cleanouts is this simple-as-day leather belt. It may not spark joy, but it certainly has never looked dated.

Women Over Age 40 Know These Are the Best Kinds of Jeans

By the time you reach your 40s, you’ve most likely checked off a few boxes. First, you’ve honed your personal style and taste level. Next, you know which pieces and trends you like and which ones you don’t. Finally, you fully grasp the importance of feeling comfortable—after all, comfort equals confidence, right? With that in mind, it’s only fitting that for many women over 40, jeans remain a mainstay in their wardrobes.

Curious to know what denim silhouettes the savviest of dressers are into? Turns out, it’s a mix of classic and of the moment. Think skinnies and straight legs combined with crop flares and reworked details. It’s a versatile mix of jeans that can be worn for all types of scenarios at all points in the year. Scroll down to discover which pairs they’re wearing on repeat, how they’re styling them right now, and where to shop them for yourself.

Right now, reach for reworked details on denim like reimagined pockets, contrast stitching, or other unexpected elements.

Like we said before, comfort is always key, which is why a pair of boyfriend jeans with a slightly slouchy silhouette is always good to keep in your closet.

A straight-leg jean is arguably the most versatile silhouette because it can be effortlessly dressed up and down.

Crop flares are delightfully flattering and elongating, making them a smart pick for summer. Finish with a breezy blouse and sandals for the weekend.

Skinnies are always a smart staple to keep within arm’s reach.

Despite any antiquated style rules you may have heard about, white jeans are well-advised all year round.

During the summer, accessorize your crop jeans with a strappy sandal. In the fall? Rotate in a pair of ankle boots.

The 5 Types of Sneakers Dominating 2019

Every time the seasons change, I look to runway shows, fashion week street style, and my favorite fashion girls to find the newest shoe trends for the next season. Then I embark on an online shopping journey to fill my (admittedly already overflowing) closet with the latest and greatest.

Every season, however, I run into the same challenge: I find myself drawn to new sneaker styles. I can’t help myself—living in New York City, I easily walk 10,000 steps every day and have suffered many a blister along the way. Consequently, I’ve learned to value comfort over everything, and there’s no shoe style that fits that bill like a good sneaker.

Not only that, but sneakers lend the perfect street style edge that I value in my personal style. Whether I’m pairing them with mom jeans or a summer dress, sneakers are the most versatile item in my entire closet. I’d consider myself somewhat of a sneaker expert, so you can trust me when I say these are the top five sneaker trends of 2019—and I own them all.

Like it or not, dad sneakers are here to stay. As their biggest fan, I wear my Filas for everything from coffee runs in my mom jeans to brunch in a white cotton dress. I’ve had my eyes on the Balenciaga Triple S Sneakers for ever and am finally going to take the leap.

Sneakers are already the most versatile shoe style, but white sneakers take it to a whole new level. Whether you’re pairing them with a slip dress or a miniskirt, white sneakers somehow manage to pull every outfit together in an effortlessly casual way.

Platform sneakers have a way of making my legs look longer, my outfits seem more delightful, and my overall look just seem enhanced. It truly is as miraculous as it sounds. Just adding a couple inches to the sole of the shoe has a profound effect, upgrading the chic-ness of the sneaker and doing wonders for my appearance.

Quite the contrast to the all-white trend, color-infused ’80s-redux sneakers are everywhere from the streets to your Instagram feed. Providing a fun, flirty twist to any outfit (be it a sundress or a chunky knit–and–mom jeans combo), rainbow-colored trainers are quickly rising to the top of the sneaker world.

When it comes to streetwear, sneakers often grab more attention than the rest of an outfit. Never is this truer than when someone’s wearing sneaker boots, which littered the streets during Paris Men’s Fashion Week S/S 20. From the Off-White runway to Kanye’s feet, you’re about to see this trend everywhere.

Now that you have your sneakers, here’s how to style them.
