Dylan Meconis’ new graphic novel is set on a mysterious island off the coast of a country that’s not quite Tudor England. It’s an alternate history, loosely based on the youth of Queen Elizabeth I.

Despite what you may have heard, dead-tree publishing isn’t dead. In fact, a host of new print magazines are bringing some wild, weird, innovative words and pictures to the alternative comics scene.
Face creams—and expensive ones at that—are having a serious moment right now in the beauty industry. Cult-loved, holy grail formulations from brands like La Mer, La Prairie, and Augustinus Bader are favorited and touted all over Instagram by makeup artists and their glowing A-list clientele, and the urge to splurge on a small tub or jar of the stuff has reached current-level pull. But, can we just say something? You don’t need to spend a fortune on your moisturizers, people.
In fact, as much as we love a decadent whip of 24-karat-rose-spiked-quartz-spring-water-dew, we’d almost argue that you shouldn’t spend your hard-earned dollars on 2 ounces of the above elixir. And you certainly don’t need to do so in order to have healthy, glowing, youthful skin. (End rant.) What’s more, most drugstore brands and moisturizers are taking nods from the above-coveted formulas and utilizing some of the exact same ingredients and technologies in their own way more affordable versions.
Despite their buzzy allure and admittedly impressive ingredient lists, expensive moisturizers aren’t necessarily doing things for your face that more affordable drugstore blends can’t. And to prove our point, we selected seven of the most iconic, well-loved moisturizers in the business and searched the depths of our favorite drugstores for like-minded compromises. Ahead, we’ve matched seven of the best holy grail moisturizers with seven equally lovable drugstore options. Keep scrolling! Neither your complexion or credit card will be sorry.
How they’re similar: Just like Augustinus Bader’s cult-loved face cream, Weleda’s OG formula comes in two versions—light and rich and boasts equally luxurious and moisturizing results (we see both formulas in makeup artists’ skin prep kits!)
How they’re similar: Both of these moisturizers are excessively glowy, shimmery, and pretty in the absolute best of ways. And while Lindstrom’s fairy-like formula is more of balm to oil and made with organic, wild-harvested ingredients, this drugstore moisturizer from Bliss holds its own thanks to powerful botanicals, advanced shea butter, and loads of brightening vitamin C.
How they’re similar: Pacifica has some of the dreamiest drugstore skincare formulations and their impressive range of moisturizers is no exception. Oh, and did we mention the brand is 100% vegan and cruelty-free? Simialr to Charlotte Tilbury’s celeb-coveted face cream, this day or night formula features peptides, floral extracts, shea butter, and aloe. It can’t be beaten for just $16!
How they’re similar: Makeup artists love this deeply luxurious face cream from Sisley Paris which is spiked with a lovely melding of rose extracts and other price-driving ingredients. If you’re on a budget, however, this drugstore moisturizer from Garnier is an exciting compromise. You can use it as a day cream, a night cream, or if you pile it on extra thick—an overnight mask. And yes, it’s infused with rose water for that same floral, delicate feel.
How they’re similar: Neutrogena’s version doesn’t have quite as fancy of an ingredient roster as Tatcha’s holy grail face cream (you just can’t compete with 23-karat gold and the brand’s triple threat mix of green tea, rice, and algae), but both formulas DO have a lovely lightweight texture that’s ideal for normal to oily skin types, and skin-quenching hyaluronic acid plays MVP for both.
How they’re similar: Okay, so La Mer will always be La Mer. And, rather untouchable in terms of how iconic and beloved it is. That said, La Roche-Posay is one of the most beloved and highly touted drugstore skincare brands in the business, and this formula boasts a semi-comparable ingredient profile thanks to prebiotic thermal water, ceramides, and other plumping skin-saviors.
How they’re similar: Both are pink, whimsical, and jelly-esque in formula. Deeply nourishing, both of these moisturizers feature hydrating ingredients like watermelon to keep skin happy and parch-free. But, e.l.f.’s is one-fifth the price! Not to call you out or anything, but unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re well aware that the ’90s have come back with quite the bang this year. Beyond the resurgence of ’90s fashion and everything that goes with it, extreme nostalgia for the celebrities that thrived during that time is back as well. The aesthetic back then was a very specific one, and if you ask the founder of our new favorite Instagram account, they’d 100% agree. Meet @90sanxiety—the poppin’ Instagram account our editors are currently crushing over.
Follow this account for chic throwback imagery of everyone’s favorite ’90s movies and TV shows, never-before-seen fashion moments, and of course, pictures of celebrities from the ’90s that will have you *shook.* While scrolling through @90sanxiety (something I do on a daily basis), I came across so many old photos of celebrities from the beloved decade that had me doing triple takes. Okay, so maybe they aren’t completely unrecognizable, but the following images definitely had me second-guessing who was who and left me flabbergasted at how different some of today’s entertainment icons looked back in the day.
Here to share a little bit about @90sanxiety is the founder of the account (who wishes to remain anonymous). Now sit back and relax as you get the inside scoop on one of the best ’90s Instagram accounts out there while scrolling through throwback celebrity gold.
What originally inspired you to create this account?
The account was created out of my love for fashion. Looking for a new creative outlet and an endless pursuit of stuff I think is cool. I took inspiration from accounts that came before mine like @90ssupermodelsdaily (inactive sadly), @90scigarettes, and @90smilk. I wanted to create more of a reference point to that specific time period, a balance of curating an aesthetic and documenting the pop culture of a historical decade. I was too young to fully experience the ’90s but close enough that I feel connected to that time.
When the account originally gained momentum, I was like, okay now this is real. I tend to be obsessive with things I am interested in and, at times, even get anxious about posting, so that’s where the name comes from. Also, you’ll notice that my account never has content outside of the 1990s—another reason it’s entirely anonymous. My personal life definitely influences what I post, but it’s not connected in any way.
The account is extremely successful—what’s your secret?
I think the account’s success was definitely hinged on timing. The content had just started gaining popularity, and I had a different take. I desperately try to show everyone unseen or uncommon images or at the very least, different angles/originals of models and celebrities who were major influencers during that time period and for the most part still are. I think that is what attracts people. Also, I owe a lot to the celebrities/influencers who followed and supported early on that really helped with exposure; thank you Kim K., Cara D., Bella H., Cindy C., Emily R., and to @virgomood for forever keeping me inspired!
What’s your take on all the ’90s hype that’s going on right now?
Although fashion trends have a tendency to be cyclical, the 1990s hits that perfect sweet spot right now across so many demographics—adults or younger adults who lived during that time period and even a nostalgic younger generation with access to more information about the ’90s than ever before. Who doesn’t get a little nineties anxiety?
