13 Trends I’m 100% Behind—and How I’m Wearing Them

As a fashion editor for Who What Wear, my eye is constantly focused on the trends unfolding everywhere from runway shows to the street style scene to the new products hitting retailers. When it comes to the outfits I’m wearing, I’m regularly interpreting the trends for myself and working them into my personal style. Yep, you’ll often see me posting outfits on my Instagram account, @kristenmarienichols, with photos of the items I’m wearing—and that was certainly the case for a recent trip overseas.

To me, one of the best parts about a trip is experimenting with some of the latest trends. I spend months writing about the big summer trends and seeing them unfold in the wardrobes of fashion insiders, so a trip is a perfect excuse to pack a suitcase full of the pieces I’ve been eyeing all season—and putting the trends to the test myself. For a recent trip to Italy, I documented all of the current trends I tried out. Ahead, see 13 trends I’m wearing, and shop the edit for yourself.

While there are plenty of new swimsuit trends at the moment, one I’ve been seeing among designers across the board is the plunge-front silhouette. I’ve owned these high-waisted bottoms from Matteau for a few seasons but just added this new Plunge top to my closet to try out the trend for myself.

Shop the matching High Waist Bikini Briefs ($135).

Here, another take on the plunge swimsuit. With a V-front silhouette and nipped-in waist, this piece from Monday Swimwear is a unique spin on the one-piece. I’m such a big fan of this style that I also ordered it in blush.

I’ve been seeing tie-front tops everywhere and knew I had to test them out for myself—like this one from Cult Gaia that has lace-up details along the front and puffy sleeves, which I paired with cream shorts and two-tone rattan shoes. The partially open front might not be for everyone, but to me is a new style I’m embracing.

Here, another tie-front top I discovered at Reformation. Unlike the billowy Cult Gaia version, this one is slightly cropped so I balanced it out with high-waist pants.

To be honest, I was hesitant to try out the pistachio trend that’s set to take over for fall. As someone who is generally more prone to wearing neutrals, I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off. After wearing this slip dress, though, I realized it is easier to wear than I originally imagined, so now I’m officially behind the trend.

This one-piece from Dos Gardenias taps into one of the other big color trends of the season: orange.

Thanks to designers like Paco Rabanne and Jacquemus, maxi silhouettes are back on the map. Admittedly, I’ve often found the length tricky to pull off, but this Matteau dress proved to be an easy way to add it back into my wardrobe.

While chunky sneakers have been the go-to style among fashion insiders, retro sneakers with sleeker lines are set to take over this fall. I’m definitely here for the classic sneaker revival.

Sheer tops are one of the big trends of the moment, but I’ve been hesitant to add one into my wardrobe. To be honest, I’ve tried wearing one before but struggled with what to wear underneath. My solution? Layering a swimsuit top underneath to wear as part of the outfit. If you don’t already know about the brand Piece of White, where this top is from, it’s one you should definitely have on your radar. The label specializes in white tops, so it has an array of cool styles, including this one.

Unlike most shirtdresses, this one from Jacquemus is reinterpreted with draping at the waist and an opening top. It might have put the trend on the map, but we’re now seeing it from other designers as well.

Midi lengths have emerged as a key shape for summer and will continue to be popular moving into fall. I embraced the trend with this floral take on the silhouette from Réalisation that’s finished with a corset-style top and rose print.

Hoop earrings were everywhere last year, but now, bold gold earrings are the new accessory to own. I tested out the trend with these sculptural earrings from Greek jewelry brand Mayol.

While retro swimsuits are more of a classic at this point, they are certainly one of this year’s biggest trends, as we noted in our swimsuit trend report. This style is finished with a bra-like top and high-waisted bottoms. There’s certainly a reason this classic style is back.

Shop the matching Crepe Vintage Bikini Bottoms ($106).

Since late last year, nightgowns for the day have taken off as a trend among the fashion set. Fueled by brands like Sleeper, the trend is only gaining steam. I tried it out for myself with this dress from With Jéan, which proved to be wearable for outside the house when paired with sandals.

Sure, scrunchies have been around since the trend really hit last year, but now they are cooler than ever. I used to reserve the hair accessory for my bathroom at home, but with elegant versions on the market like this satin one from just-launched brand Refine, they deserve to be an intentional part of the outfit.

Next, find out the eight fall trends our editors are predicting will be huge.

Sheet Pan Chicken Fajitas - SHEET PAN DINNER! The quickest meal you can make with amazingly tender chicken + crisp-tender veggies with the easiest clean-up!

Hello best-ever-weeknight-dinner here.

No joke. We got one single sheet pan here. Okay, maybe one small bowl as well to mix the seasonings but that’s it. One sheet pan. One small bowl.

So you have the seasonings in your one small bowl and then you have your chicken and veggies all on the sheet pan. You toss them altogether directly on the sheet pan (because, hello, why would we dirty up another dish), throw it in the oven, and then serve immediately with warmed tortillas (corn or flour, your choice).

I like to serve mine with pico de gallo + guacamole but these are also fine as is.

And if you’re like Ben and trying to stay away from “excess carbs” for our wedding, you can totally cut out the tortillas.

If you’re doing that, I just ask that you eat this directly off the sheet pan – you know, so you can save on some additional dishes.

‘Mad Max’ Director Reveals That There Will Be 2 Sequels

Mad Max: Fury Road was one of the better movie franchise reboots ever made. That was in great part due to director George Miller’s brilliant reimagining of that post-Apocalyptic world as well as Tom Hardy‘s grim hero and Charlize Theron‘s kickass Furiosa. So naturally, there will be more Max to come.

That’s straight from Miller himself, in an interview he gave following his film’s ranking in the top 100 best movies of the decade.

Indiewire, source of the ranking, interviewed the director about the movie and any upcoming followups, and asked specifically about two Fury Road sequels:

There are two stories, both involving Mad Max, and also a Furiosa story. We’re still solving, we’ve got to play out the Warners thing, it seems to be pretty clear that it’s going to happen.

The “Warners thing” is referring to legal snags following AT&T’s acquisition of Warner Bros.

It all started because of the chaos at Warner Bros. and not Kevin Tsujihara, it was pre all that. He wasn’t the antagonist, because a lot of people didn’t know what was going on and were not prepared to make a definitive stand; everybody was running around fearful, it seems, through three regimes. It was hard to get anyone’s attention, so we went to litigation. The chaos has stabilized and it’s become extremely positive as the dust seems to have settled after [the AT&T merger].

Tsujihara is the CEO of film and TV at Warner. In February 2019 he mentioned Mad Max in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, saying, “We’d love to work with George Miller on furthering the ‘Mad Max’ franchise.”

Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron)

Tom Hardy is down for it, telling the Television Critics Association in 2017 that he’s “really just waiting for the call like, ‘All right, let’s get the leathers on and get back out there and do some more.'”

“It’s there,” Hardy continued, “I’m just waiting for it and looking forward to it.”

It certainly looks good, then, for more sand-crusted mayhem in that bleak future world. If Charlize Theron is also willing to rock that buzzcut again (at one point that seemed doubtful), then bring it on.

The 2020 Evora GT Is the Fastest, Most Powerful Lotus Ever Offered in the U.S.

Before the all-electric, totally bonkers Lotus Evija arrives with its 1,972 horses to seize the title of the world’s most powerful production car, the British automaker is dropping a sports car that’s considerably more sensible.

The 2020 Evora GT replaces the old flagship—the Evora Sport 410—as the fastest and most powerful Lotus ever offered in the United States (and Canada, for what it’s worth).

Underneath the rear engine cover is a supercharged, 3.5-liter V6 that’s been tuned to produce 416 horsepower—quite a lot for a car that tips the scales at just 3,104 pounds when weight-saving options like a front a carbon fiber access panel, roof panel, spoiler and diffuser are equipped. The six-speed manual coupe will hit 60 mph in 3.8 seconds on the way to a max speed of 188 mph.

Even the stock Evora GT boasts plenty of performance-minded components. It rides on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires that are wrapped around forged aluminum 10-spoke wheels and an ultra-light sports suspension.

A front lip mounted below the composite mesh grille reduces undercar airflow, thereby increasing downforce, while curved lower A-panels on the sides reduce drag.

The interior features Lotus’ classic titanium stick surrounded by Alcantara on the dashboard, door panels, transmission tunnel and center console.

An integrated 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system with AppleCarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth functionality, satellite navigation and reversing camera is also standard.

Starting at $96,950, the Lotus Evora GT can be customized further and ordered online now.

Why Eating BBQ And Other Fatty Foods Can Make You Binge Drink

According to newly-released research findings from Penn State College of Medicine, eating gloriously fatty foods does a certain something in your brain that makes you want to eat even more food, as well as binge drink.

Yuval Silberman, an assistant professor of neural and behavioral sciences at Penn State School of Medicine says: “We think it’s the eating behavior, and not the food itself, that may predispose to binge-drinking.”

Well, now you know why you always end up reaching for another beer when you’re chowing down on some tasty ribs, brisket or pulled pork, for example.

The research was first introduced at the Experimental Biology Meeting in Orlando in April, where co-author Caitlin Coker explained that fatty foods and binge drinking alcohol have the same underlying neurocircuitry and create a vicious cycle of brain activity.

“Over the short term, for example within a single meal in people or a single exposure session in rodent models, fat intake can increase alcohol intake and vice versa,” Silberman explained to Inverse

In other words, this also explains why drinking makes you want to eat anything and everything greasy.

“As far as we can tell, while the brain regions involved in binge eating or binge drinking behaviors appear to be very similar, there have been no published studies that have directly examined the relationship of such binge behaviors over a long term period.”
