How to stop your emails from being tracked

All of those obnoxious marketing emails that crowd your inbox aren’t just pushing a product. They’re also tracking whether you’ve opened the email, when you opened it, and where you were at the time by using software like MailChimp to embed tracking software into the message.

How does it work? A single tracking pixel is embedded into the email, usually (but not always) hidden within an image or a link. When the email is opened, code within the pixel sends the info back to the company’s server.

There have been some attempts to restrict the amount of information that can be transmitted this way. For example, since 2014, Google has served all images through its own proxy servers, which could hide your location from at least some tracking…

Startup’s plan to deliver baby in space halted over ‘serious ethical, safety and medical concerns’

Netherlands startup SpaceLife Origin’s mission to become the “first company that will make human reproduction in space safely possible” has been put on pause. CEO Kees Mulder says serious “ethical, safety and medical concerns” with two of SpaceLife Origin’s planned missions have caused him to pull back and reevaluate the idea, which was announced in October. He also says the time frame and business model for those missions are “not realistic,” and tells The Verge the company is “on hold.”

Mulder’s statements were posted to SpaceLife Origin’s website on June 20th, 2019, and they have replaced all other content on the website. Mulder also wrote that, “due to a serious and unrepairable breach of trust,” he has “ended [his] relationship”…

Waymo gets green light in California to pick up passengers in self-driving cars

Waymo was awarded a permit by the California Public Utilities Commission to take part in the state’s autonomous vehicle passenger service pilot program — though it may not charge riders, and a human safety driver must remain behind the wheel. The permit brings the Alphabet company one step closer to launching a robot taxi service in its home state.

Waymo is the fourth company to participate in the pilot program, following Zoox, Autox Technologies, and Pony.ai. The permit is good for three years but is separate from California’s autonomous vehicle testing program. Over 60 companies have permits from the DMV to test self-driving cars in the state.

High-Speed ‘Flying Car’ Racing Is Coming In 2020

Australian startup Airspeeder aims to take the world of motorsports to dizzying new heights with a “flying car” racing series that’s set to take flight in 2020.

The company claims that it’s creating the “world’s most watchable sport” in combining “the format of Formula E, the thrills of air racing and the glamour of F1.”

The whole thing sounds more like drone racing on steroids than the next evolution of Formula One, but it still sounds pretty fun nevertheless.

Airspeeder also apparently can’t decide whether to refer to the vehicle that will compete, the Mk.IV, as a “flying car” or a “manned electric multicopter” on its website. Regardless, here’s what we know so far about the futuristic aircraft:

Developed by Alauda Racing for Airspeeder, these battery-powered, carbon-bodied octocopters top out at 125 mph and have a claimed power-to-weight ratio that’s “superior to an F-18 fighter jet.”

The Mk.IV is set to make its debut at the UK’s Goodwood Festival of Speed this week, where it will exhibit its aerial capabilities at the Goodwood Aerodrome.

CNET’s Road Show reports that testing will continue this November in the Mojave Desert before Airspeeder launches the racing series next year.

Women’s World Cup Soccer Star Alex Morgan Causes Uproar With Tea-Sipping Victory Over British Team

Alex Morgan

The English do love their tea, but when it’s sipped from an imaginary cup by an American who just beat them at one of their signature sports, it’s “distasteful.”

United States women’s national soccer team forward Alex Morgan just found that out after her jokey tea-sipping celebration of the goal that ultimately won her team a berth in the finals of the Women’s World Cup with a 2-1 victory over England on Tuesday.

English soccer star Lianne Sanderson likely spoke for many of her aggrieved fellow Brits when she called Morgan out over the joke when speaking with beIN Sports after the match.

Sanderson acknowledged she could be misreading Morgan, but for her the gesture was “based upon playing against England.”

She admitted that the English do love tea, and while she’s not into it, “that’s what we’re connected with, so I think it’s a little bit distasteful.”

For her part, Morgan — one of the American team’s breakout stars alongside colorful, outspoken winger Megan Rapinoe, who didn’t play Tuesday — was anything but apologetic.

“This team is special,” tweeted Morgan, who also celebrated her 30th birthday Tuesday, “Thanks for the bday love. Thanks for the rocking stadium. Thanks for continuing to believe with us. And that’s the tea.”

The U.S. team has been accused of excessive celebration before, such as when they absolutely destroyed Thailand with a 13-0 shutout.

Alex Morgan

But the fact is, the American team is both dominant and charismatic, and it seems like much of the world simply doesn’t know how to deal with a badass American woman who openly celebrates winning because she’s very good at what she does.

That’s some bitter tea for an English athlete like Sanderson, but it’s pretty damn sweet for Alex Morgan and her teammates.

The US women play in the finals on Sunday, July 7.
