5 Items Anna Wintour Would Remove From Your Closet ASAP

We don’t consider ourselves lemmings in the slightest when it comes to fashion. We know what we like, and can pick and choose which trends are best suited for our respective wardrobes (we assume the same for you). That said, there are a select few individuals who have a bit more, say, influence over how we view our wardrobes. Chalk it up to their decades of experience, exceptional taste, and impeccable foresight that causes us to listen extra hard to what they have to say. One of these individuals, you may have guessed, is Anna Wintour.

We don’t have to provide much context here as to why we listen to Wintour’s style advice; her experience speaks for itself. Though her personal aesthetic has stayed relatively the same the last 20 or so years (we could spot that bob in a crowd anywhere!), Vogue‘s editor in chief is a big proponent of fun, fresh dressing and embracing your own personal style. Ahead, we rounded up five pieces of advice from Wintour about what you should consider tossing from your wardrobe and a slew of shopping suggestions for what to replace it with.

“We’re surrounded by so many celebrities that you feel are dictated to by their stylists and dictated to by what the press may think of them, and therefore end up in a strapless fishtail sequin dress that we’ve seen 5000 times.” Read more here.

“I look at the street style pictures that are on our site and many other sites and I find them very, very inspiring and fun—and thank god they’re not all dressed in black the way they used to be. I like seeing people making such an effort and having so much fun with it.” Read more here.

“That’s what I’m inspired about when I see the street style when I see someone who doesn’t look like they came straight from the runway, who’s actually put it together with their own personal style and invention and humor and wit. I think it’s fabulous, why not?” Read more here.

“I don’t really love nylon.” Read more here.

“It’s so interesting to me how people dress when they come in for interviews. Sometimes you feel they’re wearing clothes that they just bought that morning, or maybe the night before, and not something that in any way suits their personality and who they are. I think what everyone should remember, whether they’re interviewing at Vogue or indeed anywhere, that we’re not hiring your wardrobe. Your wardrobe is not going to be doing the job for you—it’s who you are.” Watch more here.

11 Reasons Jennifer Lopez Always Looks Amazing in Photos

Bold (but true) statement: Jennifer Lopez never takes a bad photo. Granted, she’s been famous for over 20 years and thus has had plenty of practice, but her photo-taking skills are quite impressive nonetheless. She doesn’t just put her photogenic tricks to use on the red carpet—there are plenty of Instagram selfies and paparazzi photos that show she clearly knows what she’s doing.

Given that we cover J.Lo’s looks quite a lot (you guys love her), we look at dozens of photos of her on a weekly basis. As a result, we’re up on the photogenic tricks she’s kept in her back pocket for years. And just as we did for Blake Lively, Kendall Jenner, Meghan Markle, and Gigi Hadid, we’re sharing our findings with you so that you, too, can look ridiculously amazing in selfies, weddings, photo booths, and action shots.

Keep scrolling to see the 11 photogenic tricks Lopez has mastered and shop pieces she’s constantly photographed in.

If a camera is above you, there’s a little more freedom, but if it’s straight ahead, do as J.Lo does and keep your chin down for the most flattering angle. On Jennifer Lopez: Julien Macdonald dress
Lopez knows that the easiest way to look natural in a photo is to do something with your hands, like put them in your pockets. On Jennifer Lopez: Chanel bag; Monika Chiang Zaria Boots ($750)
We have a hunch that J.Lo takes the time to study everything she wears in the mirror when she’s going to be photographed. Every outfit looks better at different angles. On Jennifer Lopez: Tom Ford dress
Photographs with hidden limbs can look a bit awkward and disproportioned. Lopez always makes an effort to keep hers in view (which perhaps may have something to do with all that bling she wears on her fingers). On Jennifer Lopez: Ralph & Russo dress
Action shots are often the best shots. Take advantage of them by turning your face toward the camera. On Jennifer Lopez: Elie Saab dress
If your skirt has a slit and your boots are amazing, by all means, show them off. This is just an example, but it applies to any outfit with a cool, Instagrammable feature. On Jennifer Lopez: Roberto Cavalli outfit; Casadei boots
If you’re going to put your hand on your hip (or any other common pose), do so with confidence. Popular poses became popular because they’re flattering, but if you look uncomfortable, the pose won’t make for a great photo. On Jennifer Lopez: Elie Saab dress and bag; Christian Louboutin shoes
J.Lo loves to show off her legs, and this disco-inspired dress would be right up her alley.
Sky-high over-the-knee boots have been her signature shoe style for years.
Lopez is so fond of statement-making shades that she just launched a collection of her own with Quay.
High-waist black leggings are a workout staple for Lopez.
J.Lo always wears wide-leg trousers and heels when she’s going for a professional look, and it always works.
A wide belt helps Lopez to accentuate her waist (which she loves to show off).
Based on how often Lopez wears pencil skirts, we imagine she has a rack full of them in her closet.
These skinny jeans have been in Lopez’s outfit rotation for years.
Lopez has been taking selfies in these monogrammed hoops as of late.
Lopez knows that wearing a bold color makes for an engaging photo.

Next up, four swimsuit trends that are J.Lo-approved.

My 55-Year-Old Mom Says These Brands Make the Best Basics

Remember when I made my mom share her take on the best fashion items worth investing in? Not surprisingly, her advice was a hit you all (just as it’s been for myself and my sisters all our lives), which is why I figured I’d pry some more intel out of her on a new topic. This time, the woman of few words but much good taste (whose name, by the way, is Shirin) gave us the scoop on her favorite brands for buying basics—a topic which, actually, seemed quite fitting, seeing as I also have an affinity for the simple yet crucial wardrobe staples.

Nonetheless, from Gap and Zara to Chanel and Proenza Schouler, she’s got something for the under-$100 shoppers, the investment buyers, and, of course, those who are somewhere in the middle. To see and shop all 12 of the brands that made the cut, just keep scrolling.

“J.Crew has the best cardigans.”
Like everyone, my mom is a big fan of Nike’s simple (and affordable) sneakers.
Today I learned that Gap has the softest tanks and pajamas, most of which can typically be found on sale.
Like mother, like daughter. The woman loves a good Zara find—namely, their tees, sandals, and trousers.
For timeless blazers, it’s Ralph Lauren.
Sounds specific, but apparently Proenza Schouler really excels in the white tops category.
According to my mom, “a Chanel tweed jacket is a basic”—and I’m not mad at that.
If you’re looking for a good pair of pants to invest in, Armani is her pick.
These trending pleated jeans would be my pick, while the classic pair below would be my mom’s/
I would have to agree with her that Vince has the best sweaters.
But, then again, who isn’t obsessed with everything from Theory?
Another very solid denim brand for simple yet perfect jeans.

The 2019 Fashion-Girl Summer Wardrobe

What, exactly, are the must-buy pieces you’ll spot in fashion girls’ summer wardrobes this season? As an editor with a constant eye on the latest outfits among the fashion set and new arrivals at retailers, I have some predictions. While summer hasn’t arrived yet, there are already some key trends that have emerged on the fashion scene that are set to be big for the season ahead.

For starters, there is a shoe trend that is about to take over. We’re seeing a version of the popular strappy heels in a flat-sandal silhouette that is more practical for vacation wardrobes than its taller counterparts. Other essential accessories like large sunglasses and silk headbands are replacing last year’s trends like tiny sunglasses and bucket hats. Go on for the full list of this summer’s must-own trends, as well as my edit of pieces to add to your wardrobe now.

And Now, the Most Popular Dresses of the Summer

Ah, summer—the season of weekend BBQs, lazing by the pool, Friday afternoons off, paperless post invitations, and a uniform comprised of easy, breezy dresses. Right now we have summer outfits on our mind and whether you’re going to a summer wedding or a casual day at the beach—a chic and easy summer frock will get you through every occasion on your google calendar. So what dress trends are all the cool girls wearing this season? From polka dots to statement sleeves, and cult brands such as Rixo and Faithfull the Brand, below we’re highlighting the styles, silhouettes, and brands, the fashion crowd is loving right now for the warm season ahead. Get ready to live in these dress trends in the months ahead.

Women Over Age 40 Know These Are the Best Kinds of Sneakers

By the time you reach your 40s, you’ve most likely checked off a few boxes. First, you’ve honed in on your personal style and taste. Next, you know which pieces and trends you like and which ones you don’t. Finally, you fully grasp the importance of feeling comfortable—after all, comfort equals confidence, right? With that in mind, it’s only fitting that for many women over 40, sneakers remain a mainstay in their wardrobes.

Thankfully, in the last five or so years, we’ve seen a huge spike in the sneakers trend. Cult classics like Converse, Adidas, Nike, and so on have resurfaced in addition to to indie labels with cool silhouettes (Veja, Feit, Common Projects) popping up. There are even designer iterations—who would’ve thought we’d see a Valentino or Balenciaga sneaker rise in popularity the way they have? In other words, there are a boatload of options to choose from when it comes to sneakers and the 10 over-40 influencers ahead illustrate just how versatile they can be. Scroll down to discover which pairs they’re wearing, how they’re styling them right now, and where to shop them for yourself.

I Spend $275 a Month on Skincare—But These New Under-$20 Products Are Amazing

I wouldn’t call myself incredibly extravagant when it comes to my purchases, but I do have a weakness for the odd luxury. Currently, these consist of weekly blow drys at the Drybar, buying one too many Reformation dresses, and $19 Martinis at Sunset Tower Hotel. But I’ve noticed a grand portion of my paycheck disappears on luxury skincare. What can I say? I have a soft spot for $325 La Mer Soft Cream, $215 La Mer Eye Cream, $80 Eve Lom Cleanser, and $160 Dr. Barbara Sturm Face Masks. All of which strip my wallet of approximately $275 a month when I calculate how often I replenish them. (That’s $3300 a year—a business class ticket to Paris when you think of it that way.) Insert shocked face emoji here.

Curious to see if I could curb my luxury skincare kick for at least a few months (and save some major dollars for that getaway to Paris), I put Versed, our new sister skincare brand, to the test. The whole skincare range at Versed clocks in at under $20, is available to buy at Target, and prides itself on its clean, uncomplicated ingredients, and sustainably sourced, nontoxic, results-driven items—including cleansers, moisturizers, eyes creams, and oils to serums, peels, masks, and spot treatments. The cool packaging looks way more expensive than its price tag and is practically made for Instagram.

I tried and tested a selection of products catered to my dry skin. Scroll below for my thoughts and my favorites that I’m now using on repeat. (Perhaps that business class trip to Paris is closer than I think.)

Made for dryness (so perfect for me), this hydrating booster is the missing product my skincare regime has been yearning for. It’s made up of two types of hyaluronic acid (that magic ingredient that bumps up hydration levels), so I added a couple of drops to my daily moisturizer and occasionally to my foundation. It created an overall dewier look and made my skin feel quenched. It’s such an easy and effective way to add moisture to parched skin. Top points for this one.
I love the fact I can layer this mask onto my skin and go out to the store or open the door to the mail carrier and no one will actually notice I have a face mask on. The hydrating and plumping gel mask is beautifully clear and is made for dryness and aging skin concerns. I didn’t feel that it really penetrated into my skin, nor did I feel the tightening or tingling feeling I often do with other masks—but it was, however, extremely soothing and cooling and it make my skin feel super smooth afterward. I also love the rosy scent, not to mention the Insta-worthy packaging. Plus, for $11 you can’t go wrong.
I’ve never really added serum to my skincare regime, but this product has made me think twice. I have uneven skin tone, redness, and am prone to breakouts, and after using it morning and night (applying it to slightly damp skin) I noticed a real difference—it calmed my inflammation, soothed my redness and I never broke out once over the weeks I used it.
This is so refreshing and great for summer! It’s such a light, gentle, and fresh daily cleanser and is perfect if you’re looking for an easy everyday face wash. Made of mint and rosewater, it creates a frothy and foamy texture and made my skin felt minty-fresh without that tight-skin sensation after. While I’ll probably keep my deep cleanser I use right now for my problem skin, this is a great supplement to when I’m looking for something easy and gentle.
I am yet to find a formula that will eliminate my dark under-eye circles completely, but this lightweight and brightening cooling eye gel does a great job of perking up my dull eyes.  It’s made of vitamin C, ginseng root, and coffee seed extract and leaves a lovely dewy and luminous look on my tired eyes.
