Portugal’s Largest Wine Company Bets Big on White Wine Grape Arinto (Wine Spectator)

The Portuguese wine group Sogrape Vinhos is making a big bet on a white grape you may not have heard of: Arinto. Last month, the company acquired Quinta da Romeira, owners of Portugal’s largest Arinto vineyard, from the Ferreira family. The sale price was not disclosed.

Quinta da Romeira’s labels include Prova Régia and Morgado de Sta. Catherina. The winery, located in Bucelas, about 15 miles outside Lisbon, owns 445 acres, of which nearly 185 acres are planted to Arinto. The winery produces more than 50,000 cases per year. The sale allows Sogrape to grow its regional diversity, and confirms the belief among the company’s principals that there is quality winemaking potential beyond the Douro Valley.

“The move for the Lisbon region was mandatory for Sogrape,” Fernando da Cunha Guedes, Sogrape’s CEO, told Wine Spectator. “And to make it in the Bucelas subregion is a source of great joy and pride, but also of great responsibility.” António Braga, head winemaker of Sogrape in charge of Mateus, Vinhos Verdes and Dão, will be responsible for the Romeira wines.

Sogrape is the biggest wine company in Portugal, with annual revenue around US$250 million, more than the seven next biggest producers combined. The firm exports 70 percent of its total production, and the United States comprises around 15 percent of its export sales. Historically built on the success of Portuguese rosé Mateus, the family-run company was founded in 1942. The company performs well with both big-volume wines and high-end, terroir-driven cuvées like Casa Ferreirinha’s Barca-Velha.

The company’s expansion has been steady, encompassing investments both in Portugal and abroad. Today, Sogrape owns vineyards and brands in New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, and Spain. In Portugal, Sogrape has been working to diversify its regional offerings, with wineries and brands in the Douro and Porto, Bairrada, Vinhos Verdes, Dão, Alentejo and even Madeira.

Arinto, a very aromatic, high-acidity grape that makes expressive and balanced wines, is arguably one of Portugal’s best white wine grapes. It’s native to the Bucelas appellation, which was established in 1908, but whose wines have earned praise for centuries: During the Napoleonic Wars, the Duke of Wellington, commander of the Portuguese-English allied army and a food and wine lover, carried Arinto de Bucelas wines home to London as an offering to King George III.

Adam Levine Responds to Critics Who Panned Maroon 5 Super Bowl Halftime Show

With the New England Patriots leading the Los Angeles Rams 3-0 after an excruciatingly low-scoring first half, Maroon 5 had a chance to deliver an exciting performance for millions at the Super Bowl LIII halftime show.

By most accounts, that’s not what happened.

Despite plenty of pyro, shirtless guitar solos, guest appearances from Travis Scott and Big Boi, a full gospel choir, and a random cameo from Spongebob Squarepants, everyone from NBA superstar LeBron James to sports writers logged on to Twitter and lambasted the live show.

Perhaps the sharpest shot came from The Onion. The cheeky satire outlet tweeted a story titled, “Super Bowl Halftime Show Marred By Functioning Sound System.”

The NFL uploaded the full show to YouTube, where it received nearly 200,000 dislikes compared to just 26,000 likes in less than 24 hours.

Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine responded to the savage reviews with grace on Instagram by thanking his fans and critics alike.

“We thank the universe for this historic opportunity to play on the world’s biggest stage,” he wrote. “We thank our fans for making our dreams possible. And we thank our critics for always pushing us to do better.”

The 39-year-old judge of NBC’s The Voice ended his post with a confused list of words like “forgive,” “sweat,” “preserve,” and “scream.”

It’s safe to say that Levine and co. probably won’t be taking the Super Bowl halftime show stage again.

Verizon Super Bowl ad honors first responders after wildfire throttling scandal

Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg

Last night, Verizon launched a Super Bowl ad campaign honoring first responders, months after a scandal over throttling firefighters during a wildfire crisis in California.

The ad includes interviews with first responders and ends with a message from Verizon: “First responders answer the call. Our job is to make sure they can get it.” The ad then directs viewers to a website, AllOurThanks.com, which includes interviews with NFL athletes explaining how first responders came to their aid during emergencies.

Verizon says on the website that it is working with the Gary Sinise Foundation, which gives to first responders and their families, and it will send $1 for mentions of the campaign on…

Volkswagen will use Tesla battery packs in some of its US charging stations

Volkswagen’s Electrify America is buying and installing Tesla Powerpacks at “more than 100” of its charging stations to help during peak charging times, the company announced on Monday. The Powerpacks, which will be installed over the course of 2019, will have 350kWh of capacity and be capable of 210kW fast-charging.

The addition of Tesla’s battery storage units to VW’s fast-growing EV charging network is a sign that automakers will need to work together to build out the infrastructure needed to support the mass adoption of electric vehicles. Tesla laid the groundwork with its Supercharger network, and other car companies with aspirations of electrified lineups are still playing catch-up.

You can now listen to an interactive Choose Your Own Adventure audiobook with Alexa

With the introduction of smart assistants that can interact with users, interactive fiction has been an intriguing possibility for game developers and publishers. Today, Audible is bringing interactive stories to life by joining Amazon’s Alexa skills with Chooseco’s Choose Your Own Adventure series.

The Vermont-based company has partnered with Audible to produce an audiobook version of its stories. At launch are two titles: The Abominable Snowman and Journey Under the Sea. It works as you might think: you open the story by saying, “Alexa, open Choose Your Own Adventure,” and a narrator begins to read from the book. Once you reach a decision point, they ask you what you’d like to do, and the story proceeds to the next point. When you…
