Your internet provider thinks you’re dumb. Between fake “unlimited” plans, bogus fees, and simply not providing promised speeds, companies like Verizon, AT&T, Comcast, and Spectrum have been using questionable claims and branding to spin their customers for years. Now, as we approach an era of faster mobile and wired internet speeds, recent marketing antics show that this kind of insult to your intelligence is only going to get worse.

The latest salvo revolves around companies pretending to reach or beat 5G without actually offering 5G. Don’t replace wall with ‘invasive surveillance tech,’ say civil liberties groups

Over two dozen technology and human rights organizations published an open letter to congressional leaders this morning requesting that they refuse to fund any “invasive surveillance technology” at the southern border.

A border wall was a significant part of President Trump’s campaign platform, and over the past few weeks, the White House has put increasing pressure on Congress to deliver funding for the wall. Last month, the nation’s longest government shutdown was put to an end after President Trump and Democrats agreed to open the government for an additional three weeks, allowing for them to discuss border funding without leaving hundreds of thousands of government employees without a paycheck.

Amazon’s Alexa-enabled microwave is cheaper than ever

The AmazonBasics microwave that can operate with Alexa voice commands from a nearby Echo speaker is now just $41.99, which is its lowest price ever. Normally $59.99, this 700-watt microwave is pretty tiny, and it fits best in a small living space.

If you want to take advantage of its hands-free features, Amazon says that this model currently supports 24 voice commands (you can check them out here) to activate the microwave, and it will continue to add more over time.

Verge reporter Shannon Liao reviewed the AmazonBasics microwave, and she thought that the setup process was fairly streamlined. The voice commands work well, too, and Alexa knows well enough how long it takes this microwave to cook popcorn without burning it. Speaking more…
