Purse So Tiny You Need a Backup Tote Bag? Same

Strapped low around Beyoncé’s rainbow-striped hips, the teeny-tiny Jacquemus Le Chiquito bag looks like something she could have nabbed out of 7-year-old Blue Ivy’s closet—a starter purse, perhaps. A bell pepper–green snack. Tiffany Hsu, fashion buying director at MyTheresa, wore hers with an all-beige look, and her hot-pink mock-croc version yipped, “Spring!” into the monochrome void of winter.

Both times, this tiny bag belies its size, packing big style and making a bold statement. Fabulous people aren’t hauling around that much; they have people for that. But for regular folks, a tiny purse presents more of a logistical challenge, even though the trend is here to stay in 2019.

On any given day, I’m carrying around two books, an Amazon Fire tablet, a laptop, a notebook, a day planner, a wallet, and my giant iPhone XS Max, not to mention my 13 lip glosses, multiple hand creams, extra sunscreen, and who knows what else? As much as I’d like to be like Beyoncé with a tiny, trendy purse, it doesn’t take much to realize on most days, I’m going to need a bigger bag.

The challenge is a welcome one and has an easy solution: the backup tote. You can’t manifest extra volume inside a bag, but you can just carry a second one. At the risk of sounding totally obvious, here’s how I do it: I narrow down what essentials can fit in my little JW Pei Fiona bag—wallet, MTA card, Chapstick, phone—and throw everything else into my Madewell Transport Tote.

Lucky for all of us, there are so many styles of tiny bags and totes to choose from. See below for some of my favorites and have fun doubling up. Remember: It takes two, baby.

Let’s start with this classic and business-minded option.
According to Who What Wear UK, Burberry check is in.
Put it all on display.
I’ve had this Madewell tote for years, and it’s never let me down.
If you’re like Rory Gilmore and you carry a bus book, another bus book, a lunch book, and a book of short stories, you might need this oversize option.
Pair with a classic red lip for extra punch. We love Stunna Lip Paint by Fenty Beauty.
Market editor Nicole Eshaghpour is a fan of this one.
If you shove all your junk in a camo bag, Marie Kondo can’t see it, right?
Eject some energy into your life with this hit of logo mania.
A classic canvas tote can’t be beat.
Candy for your closet.
I’ve clearly got a thing for transparency.
I use the classic black version of this bag daily, but I’m eyeing the very on-trend mock-croc Fiona as well.
Looks like it will probably fit an iPhone XS Max and a Dior Lip Glow.
Hands-free so you can rummage around in your tote.
Dainty silhouette with ferocious style.
I told you…
You can take this garden to go.
Millennial Pink seems to be sticking around.
Exhibit D? I’m nothing if not committed.

Finally, a Color Trend for Minimalists

Usually, when I notice or hear of a new color trend bubbling up, I respond either with disdain or disinterest because, honestly, I’m not that into colors. Sure, I’ll wear a vibrant party piece or statement accessory every now and then, but when it comes to day-to-day dressing, my style is pretty simple, and I like to keep it that way. That’s why when I recently noticed a new colorless trend on the street style scene as well as in the offerings of so many of my favorite brands, I found myself very into it, and I knew anyone else with minimalist tendencies would feel the same.

If you’re still with me and haven’t gone straight for the below shopping section, the trend I’m referring to is black-and-white. From coats to tops to sweaters to accessories, the combo has made for quite the dynamic duo both in individual items and entire outfits alike. Thanks to the neutral nature of the pieces, they are nearly impossible to style wrong, making the fad particularly accessible for anyone who’s interested. To see how the street style set is wearing the trend, and to shop my favorite black-and-white pieces of the moment, just keep scrolling.

Caroline Daur’s Saks Potts coat was one of the first items that inspired me to conceptualize this story. Can you blame me though?
Since she’s the global buying director of Net-a-Porter, it’s no surprise Elizabeth von der Goltz was ahead of the curve, seen here at Paris Fashion Week back in October.
If committing to a full black-and-white outfit seems to underwhelming to you, consider adding just an accessory to your rotation.
Conveniently, these pieces also pair perfectly with any color—as seen through this pop of purple.
Here, what could have been an all-black look is seemingly magically transformed into street style gold with the simple infusion of some white.

Celebs Are Obsessed With Violet Grey—Here’s What’s in Their Shopping Bags

According to actress Sara Foster, legendary makeup artist Gucci Westman was actually the first pro to ever do her makeup. The actress is known for a natural, barely there MO when it comes to product, so it’s no surprise Westman turned Foster onto her new namesake makeup line, with her dreamy, ultra-blendable blush stick being a travel-friendly standby.
Although we also hold a fiery torch for anything Westman Atelier, when it comes to top-notch cream-blush formulas, we’re equally loyal to this two-in-one blush and highlight from Kosås. Thanks to its neutral palette and lasting wear, we think Foster would be just as into it.
Like virtually every celebrity (and beauty editor) on the planet, KKW is obsessed with Augustinus Bader’s already iconic anti-aging elixir. Despite the fact that it only just launched last year, it’s amassed colossal attention due to its Trigger Factor Complex—a combination of natural amino acids, high-grade vitamins, and synthesized molecules—which encourages the regeneration of the body’s own stem cells.
As someone who has personally tried The Rich Cream, I can definitely speak to its loveliness. Truth be told, however, I actually prefer this luxe alternative from Royal Fern. In addition to its nourishing Royal Fern Complex, it also contains heavy skincare hitters like hyaluronic acid, retinol, vitamin C, vitamin E, cocoa butter, macadamia nut oil, and more.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is known for her amazing pout, so whenever she divulges the products she chooses to plump, hydrate, or stain it with, we pay attention. According to this feature we found on Violet Grey, she’s partial to this flattering shade of pink from Tom Ford.
That said, we also know she has an affinity for beauty products from Yves Saint Laurent (especially mascara—just read the article for proof), so we think she’d also love this favorite find from the brand. The color-and-shine payoff is a tad more amplified, but we think the model can totally handle it.
Jillian Dempsey is one of Hollywood’s favorite makeup artists, so when she came out with her own line of products, we (and her A-list roster of clients) rejoiced. As reported here, Dempsey loves applying her Cheek Tint in Rosy on actress and personal friend Leslie Mann.
To get her own dewy dose of color on her apples and cheekbones, my fellow beauty editor (and roomie) Amanda Montell always sings this blush’s praises. We’d bet Mann would love this sunset-hued tone if she were to give it a whirl.
Demi Moore pretty much doesn’t age—at least externally—and according to various sources, Hanacure’s slightly intimidating but thoroughly effective all-in-one facial is likely to blame.
However, if you don’t like the feeling of your mask suctioning your face (and looking quite scary in the process), we recommend this lesser-known peel from all-natural and organic skincare goddess Tammy Fender. After just one use, it made my acne-prone face look and feel as luminously soft as an angelic baby’s bum.
It’s no secret celebrities go wild for anything from Charlotte Tilbury (she’s known for the glow, after all), and we read here that actress Emma Roberts is particularly fond of the brand’s signature Magic Cream. So much so, she applies it all over her face and body.
Since damask rose and rose-hip oil are two of the starring ingredients in Roberts’s favorite formula from Charlotte Tilbury, we thought we’d keep to the theme with this sensational skincare pick from Sisley-Paris, which plays host to all sorts of luxurious rose extracts and is another top pick from my skin-blessed fellow editor Amanda.
Hairstylist Teddi Cranford loves using this delicious smelling formula from Oribe on Harrier’s strands. She credits the chic tube for adding extra grip to the hair during a blowout which ultimately enhances hold and body. A win-win.
We’ve yet to meet someone who doesn’t love a good multi-tasking product—especially when it comes to prepping their strands. Additionally, we’ve yet to introduce someone to still under-the-radar brand, Virtue, who isn’t instantly impressed. This 6-in-1 styler does everything your current stash of pre-styling products does in one fell—and swifter—swoop. Plus, it will make you smell like heaven in the process.
Actress January Jones might have one of the clearest and most perpetually glowing complexions in all of Hollywood. Luckily for us, she frequently shares snapshots of all of her favorite skin and haircare picks. One of which is this primetime exfoliator from Hungarian skincare brand Omorovicza.
We’re also big fans of Omorovicza, but when it comes to a dreamy skin elixir that exfoliates our skin to a T on even our most sensitive of days, we turn to this pink, lightweight, ultra-gentle alternative from celeb facialist Angela Caglia. The name doesn’t lie. It truly is a dream.
When celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff shares her coveted collection of red carpet secret weapons, we immediately prick our ears, especially when Dakota Johnson is her subject. Here, we found out this luminizing foundation primer is a favorite of both Dubroff and Johnson.
Despite the fervor which often surrounds Laura Mercier’s cult-classic radiance-promoting primer, I’ve actually found it doesn’t play well with my already oil-prone complexion. Thus, I prefer the brand’s Hydrating Formula or my be-all-and-end-all primer fave from Koh Gen Do. Choose from the yellow tone to correct redness and discoloration or this lavender pink hue to help out with sallowness and impart a flattering rosy glow.  Next up, here’s what we think Kate Middleton would buy with $50 at Sephora.

7 Things Jessica Biel Probably Wouldn’t Be Caught Dead Wearing Again

Part of the reason everyone is obsessed with Jessica Biel’s style is that she’s been in our lives since the ’90s thanks to her role on 7th Heaven. In 2019, Biel is as famous as ever—and as stylish as ever—but her style has undoubtedly evolved since the ’90s. Back then, she fully embraced the grunge aesthetic that was so popular, but these days, she favors pretty dresses and classic trench coats.

You’ll often find Biel wearing skinny jeans, chic wool coats, ankle boots, and beautifully fitted dresses. In the ’90s, you’d see her in tube tops, platform shoes, and sheer fabrics. As you’ll see below, things have changed, folks. So without further ado, keep scrolling to see exactly how much Jessica Biel’s style has changed over the decades, and shop pieces she’d wear in 2019.

My Mom, My Hairstylist, and a 4-Year-Old Weigh In on the Hair Clip Trend

You’ve seen them splattered across your Instagram feed for weeks now, layered up and down the tresses of your favorite influencers, pinned atop the heads of your most stylish friends, and maybe even in your own accessory drawer. At this point, there’s no denying that the hair clip trend has reached a fever pitch in all manner of styles—from itty-bitty claws to large acrylic barrettes—taking over as the It accessory to wear and be seen wearing.

My take? The nostalgic factor definitely plays a role in their popularity. I mean, who doesn’t secretly want to dress as they did in kindergarten? With the recent revival of things like scrunchies, bucket hats, and headbands, it seems everyone’s game to re-create their grade-school accessory game with a modern spin. Sure, I’ve been inspired by all the #hairfies from my favorite fashion girls’ feeds, but it’s not like this trend came out of nowhere. I wanted to know what OG hair clip enthusiasts really think about 2019’s clipmania and how they suggest styling the clips to achieve a winning look.

I spoke with hairstylist Chad Kenyon of the celeb-adored Ramirez Tran Salon, who’s seen dozens of hair trends come and go; two preschool-aged girls who represent the key demographic of a hair clip market; and my very own mother, whose barrette collection I’ve admired for years now. Keep reading to see what each “expert” has to say about styling the clips, and then shop my current favorite styles.

Have you seen the news? It’s apparently -50 degrees windchill in Chicago right now.

I wish I was joking. Meanwhile, it was 69 degrees F here in LA today. How will Butters and I survive in the Windy City?

I mean, I’ve loaded up on parkas and electric blankets for myself and Butters. But I don’t know, guys. It’s going to be a dicey winter for us Californians.

But what I do know is this – have as much of this creamy tortellini soup as possible until the polar vortex passes.

That and all the crusty bread to sop up all this creamy goodness.

Oh, and the wine. That helps warm you up too, no?

Creamy Tortellini Soup

My favorite cozy weeknight soup made in just 30 min! It’s so stinking easy too. Loaded with tender tortellini, sausage and kale!

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, casing removed
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium sweet onion, diced
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups chicken stock
  • 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (9-ounce) package refrigerated three cheese tortellini
  • 1/2 bunch kale, stems removed and leaves chopped
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil

Directions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large stockpot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add Italian sausage and cook until browned, about 3-5 minutes, making sure to crumble the sausage as it cooks; drain excess fat.
  2. Stir in garlic, onion and Italian seasoning. Cook, stirring frequently, until onions have become translucent, about 2-3 minutes; season with salt and pepper, to taste.
  3. Whisk in flour until lightly browned, about 1 minute.
  4. Gradually whisk in chicken stock and tomato sauce. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until reduced and slightly thickened, about 10 minutes.
  5. Stir in tortellini; cover and cook until tender, about 5-7 minutes.
  6. Stir in kale until wilted, about 1-2 minutes. Stir in heavy cream and basil until heated through, about 1 minute; season with salt and pepper, to taste.
  7. Serve immediately.

We Tried On the Most Controversial Things at Zara—Here’s What We Actually Loved

Meet Lauren, Who What Wear’s fashion editor and the co-founder of The Devils Wear Zara. Lauren is so obsessed with Zara that we started calling her the Zara Scout. Now she’s turning the nickname into a franchise so she can regularly share her insider knowledge of the brand, including all her hacks, secrets, and must-haves with you.

We often talk about trends as if they are easy to pull off so long as you buy the right things. While that sentiment is not wrong, we often ignore how wearing certain trends will make you feel. Trends like animal print and statement sweaters are typically no-brainers when it comes to styles we’re willing to try, but throw something like neon and slime green into the mix, and suddenly we’re not feeling so confident.

Assuming you probably feel some type of way as well, we did what we do best—went to Zara and tried on all these weird trends so you don’t have to. As you probably know, we view Zara as the best place to test out rising trends for the clothes are affordable and they churn out new trends at the speed of light. Here, Mimi and I will walk you through our semi-traumatic Zara dressing room experiences coming at you all the way from L.A. and NY and show you which pieces we actually ended up falling in love with.

“I’ve been really nervous to buy into the neon trend, so I’d rather test the water with more affordable pieces first. This neon corduroy ‘shacket (shirt + jacket) was honestly so cool. It would look good over a black turtleneck, tied around your waist, or buttoned all the way up as its own shirt. Even though it was nearly blinding, this piece was surprisingly wearable.”
“Thanks to Man Repeller’s Harling Ross, there’s a new outfit phenomenon going around that she so cleverly coined as the ‘stick of butter’ look. Into it. I feel like the neutral monochromatic vibe just elevates your look. This sweater has super-oversize sleeves, but the pants dress it up a bit. I’m okay with looking like food, I guess.”
“For some reason, I’m always attracted to clothes that look like the Grinch’s body, and this green fleece coat was no exception. Soft to the touch and incredibly warm, I say why not opt for this weird color instead of the camels and blacks that everyone usually chooses when it comes to this coat style?”
“People will either think this hoodie is dope as hell or totally heinous. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what side I was on until I tried it on. It has that perfect oversize feel you want with a hooded sweatshirt. Yes, the denim-hybrid look is a little weird but I feel like it could get compliments (maybe). It’s one of those things you’ll probably reach for every weekend because it’s so comfy.”
“And here it is from the front.”
“I saw this online and thought it was cute but might be too much with all of the trends going on (PVC, chain link strap). I was wrong. Perfect mini bucket bag and would go with pretty much any look. Looks like something you’d want to Instagram IMO.”
“Suiting as a trend has been around for a while. To some, it may not seem exactly controversial, but the truth is that most people like the idea of wearing a suit more than they actually like wearing a suit. One of those people is definitely me. I see women wearing tailored suits of all kinds all over Instagram and beyond, but whenever I try one on in the store, I feel like I look so lame. “This skirt suit from Zara was honestly the first time I felt cool wearing a suit. The blazer is unique in that it is collarless with boxy shoulders and the miniskirt fits just right with a high-rise waist, belt loops, and pockets.”
“I also tried the blazer on with my jeans and black long-sleeve shirt I was wearing while shopping to see if it looked good all alone, and it does. In other words, my friends and co-workers will be seeing a lot of these two pieces in the coming weeks.”
+ Zara A-Line Mini Skirt ($50)
“Another perfectly oversize sweatshirt. I feel like this is the tie-dye trend for beginners—it’s not too crazy because it’s pretty neutral based. Could wear with a skirt, jeans, over a dress… the list goes on.”
“Tie-dye is really cool and can be really easy to wear if you buy the right pieces. Clearly, Mimi and I love oversize shirts and oversize anything that kind of makes us look like punk skater girls even though we could not be farther from that aesthetic. I digress. This shirt was soft and the ombre effect on the tie-dye really stands out. So I bought it.”
I paired it with these silk cargo pants that have pockets and snap closures at the ankles. It’s hard to see in this pic, but they are legit (and only $40, fam). This is an outfit I will be wearing on repeat.
“With the right hair and makeup, I could look like an extra in a Tim Burton film in this. Since my life is not a movie, I will prob style this with combat boots and a denim jacket around my waist. Shouts to Zara for making outfits very easy with the two-piece sets these days.”
+ Zara Striped Skirt With Buttons ($30)
