These Are the 5 Coolest Luxury Yachts From Boat International’s Prestigious Design Awards

Each year Boat International, the private yachting world’s most influential magazine, presents its prestigious Design & Innovation Awards “honoring the creative talents behind the most innovative, elegant and inspiring new yacht designs [from] the world’s leading yacht design studios.” Here are our five favorites from this year’s prizewinners:

1. Riva 110-ft. Dolcevita

Alberto Cocchi

Winner in the Best Exterior Styling – Motor Yachts Below 39m (128 ft.) category, iconic Italian yacht-builder Riva’s new 110-ft. flybridge model is designed for the sweet life (i.e. Dolce Vita) at sea. Judges felt it was “the most visually inspiring and one that delivered a strong, cohesive profile consistent with its mission,” thanks to “clean, spare lines and crisp window shapes…. nicely designed to show off a high contrast exterior color scheme.” Plus it can hit a top speed of 26 knots.

2. Amels 189-ft. Volpini 2

Amels

It may not seem like there’s anything remotely environmentally friendly about cruising the ocean in a massive superyacht, but Amels’ latest creation captured the Best Ecological Design & Operation Innovation Award. The sleek craft is the first yacht to comply with strict marine engine exhaust standards known as IMO Tier III. She also has a cutting edge hybrid power management system and even a bio-friendly paint job, but looks just as mean as any power-waster cruising the Mediterranean.

3. Oceanco 350-ft. Black Pearl

Moran Yacht & Ship

The second largest sailing superyacht in the world easily won the Best Naval Architecture – Sailing Yachts trophy. Oceanco’s design mission was to deliver a top speed of at least 25 knots under sail fully loaded, requiring a steel hull, aluminum superstructure, composite decks and massive carbon fiber sails. And when there’s no wind she can run on a sophisticated eco-friendly diesel-electric propulsion system. The impressive craft cost its owner a cool $200 million.

4. Abeking & Rasmussen 244-ft. Elandess

Boat International Media

Winner of the Best Interior Design – Motor Yachts 500GT and Above award, the owner’s of this German-built superyacht wanted an interior to showcase their world-class art collection and one-of-a-kind furniture pieces in what would effectively be their second home. Luxe touches like a hand-built atrium staircase with mother-of-pearl inlays place equal emphasis on craftsmanship an opulence. The effect is lterally like being on a floating mansion.

5. Pascoe International 26-ft. Open Landau

Pascoe International

Every superyacht needs a suitably stylish tender, and the Open Landau inspired by vintage automobiles easily captured Best Tender Design honors. The magazine cited it for excelling in “looks as well as performance, cockpit design, operational safety and ease [of use].” Wickedly fast as well, this stylish 10-passenger speedster has all the latest marine tech on board and is not only a critical companion for its mothership but an extension of the superyacht lifestyle in general.

Here’s Why You Should Disable the iPhone’s FaceTime App Right Now

Attention all iPhone and Mac users: Thanks to a new privacy bug in Apple’s FaceTime software, someone calling via FaceTime can hear your audio and listen in on you via your iPhone…even if you don’t pick up.

The glitch is affecting iPhones and iPads running iOS 12.1, as well as Macs running macOS Mojave with the new Group FaceTime feature.

According to 9to5Mac, here’s how to activate the bug and basically create a wiretap:

  • Start a FaceTime Video call with an iPhone contact.
  • While it’s dialing, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and tap “Add Person.”
  • Add your own phone number in the “Add Person” screen.
  • That will start a group FaceTime call with the audio of the person you’re calling, even if they haven’t accepted the call yet.

Clearly, this can be extremely problematic, so you definitely may want to disable FaceTime for now. To do that, all you need to do is go to your iPhone settings, search for “FaceTime,” and switch the toggle to gray.

And to disable it on MacOs, open the FaceTime app, click “FaceTime,” and then click “Turn off FaceTime.”

Apparently, Apple is working to fix the bug, but until then, they’ve disabled group FaceTime chats to reduce the problem.

Still, for the sake of privacy, it might be best to avoid the app until it’s fixed.

20 Years of High Speed Hell-Raising at the Gumball 3000

In 1999 former skateboarder Maximillion Cooper founded the Gumball 3000, a real-life Cannonball Run wherein participants drive their supercars as fast as inhumanly possible from one destination to another in various parts of the globe.

In 2014 Maxim went along for the ride, and this year as the now legendary race celebrates its 20th year German luxury publisher teNeues is bringing out a tribute to it in coffee table book form.

Gumball 3000: 20 Years on the Road features 450 lavish images celebrating the decadence and delirium of the asphalt-burning assemblage which has evolved beyond a mere race to include a car show, live music and more.

Every year, a million visitors join the Gumball tour, with a further 100 million households tuning in via TV and internet broadcasts in 60 countries worldwide.

The eight-day long event now covers 3,000 miles across different countries and has had burned through Europe, Asia, and North America. Celebrity participants have included everyone from David Hasselhoff and Snoop Dogg to Johnny Knoxville, Tony Hawk, Adrien Brody, Dennis Rodman, Lewis Hamilton and Eve, among others.

“Gumball is about challenging tradition and taking a nonconventional approach to exploring and pushing cultural and creative boundaries,” Cooper waxes somewhat pontifically in the book’s intro. Of course he can afford to, having made an estimated $50 million over the course of the event’s two decades.

Designed to be “an explosion of Gumball fun and facts,” aside from the pix the book features insider insights from leading participants over the course of the race’s meteoric growth, and of course anecdotes from the eye-popping parties which punctuate the annual example of automotive excess.

teNeues

TeNeues declares the book to be as “effervescent and exciting as the road rally itself” and a “must-have for all petrol-heads, partygoers,” and lovers of all things high-octane, hell-raising and hyperbolically beautiful. Get your copy here.

Kyrie Irving Is Starring in Horror Movie About a Haunted Hotel

Boston Celtics superstar, noted conspiracy theorist and possible Illuminati member Kyrie Irving has joined the cast of a horror movie about a haunted Midwestern hotel.

Variety reports that production company Imagine Entertainment has optioned a forthcoming Players’ Tribune article about the spooky experiences multiple NBA players claim to have had while staying at the Skirvin Hotel in Oklahoma City.

Irving, who once apologized for publicly stating the earth is flat, is apparently one of those players.

“Having had my own interesting experiences at the Skirvin Hotel, I connected with this idea immediately,” said Irving.

According to Variety, “The project is being developed as a horror film blending scares, satire, wit and social commentary inspired by the folklore of the Skirvin Hotel. The hauntings are believed to have started in the 1930s when the hotel’s owner had an affair with a chambermaid which led to her tragic demise.”

Imagine Entertainment chairman Brian Grazer and Bobby Cohen will produce the untitled film, while Irving will serve as an executive producer.

“To work with Brian Grazer is a dream come true, and I’m excited to bring this project to life with the Imagine Entertainment team,” Irving added.

The six-foot-three-inch point guard is averaging 23.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 6.9 assists this season. Irving made his silver screen debut in the 2018 sports comedy Uncle Drew and has guest starred on Family Guy.
