I was wearing a VR headset, standing in the middle of a dark, gothic take on A Christmas Carol. A grisly Jacob Marley asked me what I missed most about my childhood, and I told him I missed the hope and optimism of youth, when it seemed like anything was possible. When the Spirit of Christmas Past subsequently visited me, he pointed out a pair of ghostly, shadowy children chasing each other a few feet away. The spirit leaned in close. “Look at them,” he whispered, “so full of hope and potential.” It’s an easy trick, drawing a response out of an audience member and using that response to personalize their experience. But it worked — my own words coming back to haunt me drove home the sad longing in that scene and made it specific to my…
In March, many Android users were shocked to discover that Facebook had been collecting a record of their call and SMS history, as revealed by the company’s data download tool. Now, internal emails released by the UK Parliament show how the decision was made internally. According to the emails, developers knew the data was sensitive, but they still pushed to collect it as a way of expanding Facebook’s reach.
The emails show Facebook’s growth team looking to call log data as a way to improve Facebook’s algorithms as well as to locate new contacts through the “People You May Know” feature. Notably, the project manager recognized it as “a pretty high-risk thing to do from a PR perspective,” but that risk seems to have been overwhelmed by…

The first photos of the 2020 Chevy Silverado HD are here, and GM says it’s “the most capable and advanced” Heavy Duty model ever.
The American-made pickup gets an updated exterior design with beefy finishes exemplified by a monstrous mesh grill that’s split by the Chevrolet badge and a hood scoop.
Two new power plants will be offered—a yet-to-be specified gasoline engine combined with a six-speed transmission and a new version of Chevy’s Duramax turbo-diesel V8 capable of delivering 910 pound-feet of torque to an Allison 10-speed transmission.
Performance specs also haven’t been announced, but the automaker promises significant increases in towing and payload capacities over previous HDs.
“We built a heavy-duty truck tailor-made for them that has more differentiation than ever before from light-duty models,” Jaclyn McQuaid, the truck’s chief engineer, said in a press release.
“[It] offers advanced towing technologies to improve towing confidence and includes new features such as the integrated Bedstep, which makes it easier to access the bed while pulling a fifth-wheel trailer.”
As CNET notes, the 2020 Chevy Silverado HD is scheduled to make its official debut in February, most likely at the Chicago Auto Show.
