I Lived in the Midwest for 22 Years—Here’s What I’d Still Wear

In case you’re new to my byline, a couple of fun facts about me.  1. I’m from Kansas and 2. I didn’t graduate college with a fashion degree. Yet right after college I landed my dream internship at Who What Wear and moved across the country to Los Angeles. Since then my wardrobe has certainly gone through a mini-makeover. Mainly because I had just landed my first job and needed to bulk up my “workwear” essentials and also because I was stocking up on everyday Cali classics like the perfect oversized denim jackets and pieces you can easily transition from day to night.

Earlier this year I shared the items from my Midwest wardrobe that I wouldn’t wear again but today I’m slightly shifting gears and highlighting the pieces I’d still wear to this day. I’m even sharing throwback photos from my pre-Los Angeles days so you can get a sense of what my style was like when I was living in Kansas. While I’ll admit some of the looks as a whole feel a little dated (rightfully so), the key pieces I’m pointing out though still feel timeless. Keep reading to see a snapshot of my Midwest style and to see which items from my high school and college days that I’d still wear again.

Not going to lie, I’d probably still wear this outfit from head-to-toe. As you can see from this photo, cute white tops have always been essential in my wardrobe. Shop the white tops I’m eyeing right now below.
New Year’s Eve always calls for something sparkly and I think I did a good job dressing up this embellished mini dress by styling it with a matching oversized blazer. Shop embellished dresses I’d wear today.
This was by far one of my favorite tops in college and full disclaimer I actually borrowed it from a girl in my sorority but it was the top of the night. I wish I would’ve never given it back (jk!). Shop my a couple backless tops I’d buy today below.
As I mentioned in a few recent stories, I purchased this $8 headband from Amazon and wore it nearly every day while I was in Milan so it’s safe to say this high school accessory is still relevant in my book.
I think this is still a solid outfit combination and I still wear printed dresses and cool ankle boots on the reg during the weekend. Shop my favorite printed dress and ankle boots of the moment below.
While I’m ignoring my striped maxi dress situation, I still wear this black leather jacket all the time. It’s a staple every woman should invest in. Shop the one I’m wearing below.
This was my birthday outfit for my 20th bday dinner and tbh, I wish I still owned it. I remember wearing it several times after this debut with flat sandals and occasionally my go-to leather jacket. Shop little white dresses I’d buy today.
Up next, read about how I landed my job in fashion all the way from Kansas.

Angelina Jolie, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Victoria Beckham—what do all these women have in common? They’ve established an aesthetic that’s always chic, no matter what. Without copying the exact pieces they wear (because that would add up, quick) we’re breaking down the 7 most important celebrity style lessons we’ve learned from all other go-to muses when it comes to establishing a strong sense style. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has some of the best blazer outfits in the game. She wears the structured jacket with everything from jeans to trousers, making finishing off every outfit with her signature polish.
Part of the reason Angelina Jolie always looks polished is due to her go-to shoes: a nude pair of Christian Louboutin pumps that simultaneously lengthen her legs and add an air of sophistication to all her outfits.
Selena Gomez wears her gold hoop earrings on repeat, proving that the addition of versatile jewelry items makes any outfit, casual or dressy, feel much more personal.
No matter what she’s wearing, Hailey Baldwin always has a sleek edge to her look thanks to her favorite Celine sunglasses. Take a cue from her and land on a sunglass shape that suits your face, then incorporate them into every look.
Rihanna is never one to play it safe with her outfits but the one styling trick she always uses to make her most experimental looks more grounded is to coordinate her accessories, which she does to a T.
Victoria Beckham is the master at adding style to a white T-shirt. She makes the wardrobe basic anything but basic by styling it with her best trousers and suits.
A big part of Bella Hadid’s retro-cool style is her ability to marry sporty and ladylike elements in a single ensemble. We could all afford to channel her ability to balance these opposing style archetypes, especially when we want to try a new trend but still make it feel true to our personal style. Everything in moderation, right?

5 ’90s Denim Trends That Have the Most Staying Power

The ’90s have come racing back into the spotlight recently, so much so that we’re declaring the entire decade to be more relevant today than it ever was before. Even looking into what It girls like Noami Campbell and Julia Roberts were wearing 20 years ago, their outfits look eerily similar to the ones you’d find all over Instagram in 2018. Loads of straight-leg jeans, thin-strap sandals, and some of the coolest double denim looks around. So let’s face it, the ’90s most iconic fashion trends are simply not going anywhere anytime soon.

Sure, there are a good amount of styles we wore back then that we surely wouldn’t be caught dead in today, but the trends that have stuck around have proved to be virtually immortal. The most everlasting of them all? ’90s jean trends. One glimpse at the denim sections of your favorite retailers would prove just how popular shapes like straight-leg jeans are right now—so popular, in fact, they’ve been giving skinnies a run for their money this year. It’s not hard to come across even more of denim trends that have the decade to thank, they’re just hiding in plain sight.

From the jean jacket style that dominated then and now to the denim wash that’s only recently undergone a complete revival, we’re highlighting the five ’90s jean trends that are only getting more popular these days. Ahead, see how celebs were wearing the styles back then and then shop the modern-day iterations of each one.

The button fly lends a vintage appeal.
Wear this pair with all your favorite sweaters for fall.
Everlane’s denim is always a hit.
The ’00s may have owned the denim mini skirt, but the ’90s was the originator of the style—only in a longer midi length.
Channel Gwenyth and wear this skirt with knee-high leather boots.
Wear this skirt now all the way through spring—just swap your boots for block heel sandals.
So ’90s it almost hurts.
Denim jackets have been around for every decade it seems, but ’90s kids loved their cropped fits.

The perfect jacket to wear with high-waisted jeans.
We love the slouchy oversized fit of this one.

We love this jean shape worn with pointed-toe kitten heels.
Tuck in your favorite blouse.

’90s girls loved a mood denim dress, especially pinafore styles that buttoned up the front.
